Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a progressive disease of the optic nerve that is a leading cause of blindness in this country. Because early in the disease there are no symptoms, it’s often referred to as “the sneak thief of sight.” In the majority of patients with the disease, the pressure inside the eye is elevated. Medical, surgical and laser treatments are available to lower the intraocular pressure and lower the risk of optic nerve damage. With early detection and treatment, vision loss and blindness can be prevented.
Ophthalmology
Dr. Matthew Wood is board-certified and specializes in diseases of the retina and vitreous. He received his medical degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine and completed an ophthalmology residency at the University of Virginia Health System. Dr Wood then specialized in retina and vitreous with a fellowship at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He is a third generation ophthalmologist, following his father, Larry, and grandfather, Maynard, in practice in Nebraska. Dr. Wood sees his patients in the Lincoln office.
Macular Degeneration
Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a disease of the macula in the eye. The macula is a small area in the back of the eye that allows a person to see straight ahead, up close, as well as fine detail. This causes decreased central vision, which can affect our distance and near vision. This disease is more common as people get older due to aging and sometimes because of smoking, inactivity, and poor diet.

Eye Surgical Associates welcomed Dr. T.J. Clark in July of 2020. He holds clinics in Lincoln and Kearney. Dr. Clark performs surgery at Lincoln Surgical Hospital, Nebraska Surgery Center, Bryan Health, and CHI Health St. Elizabeth in Lincoln and Kearney Eye Surgery Center in Kearney, Nebraska.
Cataracts
A cataract is the progressive clouding of the crystalline lens inside the eye. The lens refracts (bends) light rays to focus on the retina which allows us to see images. Most cataracts are caused by the normal aging process, as proteins clump together on the surface of the lens. Over half of all people over the age of 60 have vision impairment due to cataracts. Cataracts usually develop gradually and can be difficult to notice at first.
Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is the removal of the cloudy lens inside the eye which is then replaced by an artificial lens called an intraocular lens or IOL. The new lens will have some prescription in it to improve eyesight.

Dr. Daniel Chruscicki earned his medical doctor degree from SUNY Stony Brook School of Medicine on Long island, NY and also completed his Internal Medicine Internship year at Stony Brook Hospital on Long Island. After his internship year, he went on to complete residency in ophthalmology at the prestigious Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, serving as chief resident during his last year. Dr. Chruscicki also completed a surgically intensive fellowship at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retinal Specialists, Nebraska Medical Association, Lancaster County Medical Society, Nebraska Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and various other organizations.

Dr. David Blodgett is a board certified ophthalmologist specializing in Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He grew up in Nebraska and received his medical degree from Creighton University School of Medicine, graduating cum laude. Dr. Blodgett completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his fellowship in Oculoplastic Surgery, Neuro-Ophthalmology and Orbital Disease in Michigan. Dr Blodgett is an accomplished author and lecturer on a variety of subjects in ophthalmology, surgery & neurology.

An early stage of diabetic retinopathy is background diabetic retinopathy. In this stage, small blood vessels leak in the retina causing swelling, and deposits called exudates form. Sometimes the leaking fluid can take place in the retina causing macular edema. When the macula becomes involved it can affect your vision and ability to do close work.

In 1994 Eye Surgical Associates and Sutton Ryan Dermatology built a modern 17,500 square foot facility in the present location at 1710 South 70th Street. Next door, Lincoln Surgical Center was built the same year, enlarged in 1999 and again in 2004. Kaylyn Jackman, O.D., an optometrist, joined the practice in 1999, and Thomas Graul, M.D., joined the group in 2000 after leaving his practice in Wisconsin.
