Insects and Spiders

Ants
Pharaoh ants most likely got their name because they were thought to be one of the seven plagues of Egypt mentioned in the Bible. Whether they troubled the ancient Egyptians are not, they are certainly a nuisance to Florida and for much of the warmer areas of the United States!
Spiders
All spiders are venomous; however, not all spider venom is toxic to humans. In fact: a Daddy Long Legs (not a true spider) has venom which is approximately 120 times more toxic to its prey than any other spider in North America, but this “spider” is completely harmless to humans. Unfortunately, we are not so lucky when it comes to a chance encounter with a Brown Recluse Spider.

Bed Bugs
Bed bugs have returned with a vengeance after being eradicated from the U.S. after World War II with a newly introduced chemical known as DDT. Researchers have named mostly third world and underdeveloped countries as the source of this insect, and concluded that the resurgence here in the United States is due to international travelers who have visited these regions and unknowingly brought back bedbugs in their clothing or luggage.
Fleas
Flea bites on your pet can cause tapeworms and skin irritations. When the fleas bite they secrete saliva, which prevents blood from clotting, making it much easier for them to extract a plasma meal and causing an allergic reaction on their skin. Your pet will scratch uncontrollably to sooth the irritation but will only worsen the problem and the suffering. If left unchecked, this skin condition and scratching can have long-lasting detrimental effects on your pet’s personality. Fleas are commonly found around your pets’ feeding and resting areas. They are easily transferred to various parts of the home by the pets and their owners, until the entire structure becomes infested.
Cockroaches
Cockroaches have lived with people since before language was even developed. The name cockroach is thought to be Spanish in origin because it shares sounds with the word “cucaracha.” The song “La Cucaracha” brings to mind the vigorous stomping of the Flamenco Dancers feet. Which could refer to the stamping of your feet if you are a homeowner who has a cockroach infestation.
Silverfish
Silverfish are most often associated with homes or buildings near a body of water like a river, stream, or pond. Silverfish live and breed in attics and various places throughout a home, though they prefer extreme temperatures like that of an attic. Although they are suited for most climates, silverfish prefer dark and humid areas like attics, basements, kitchens and bathrooms. Paper and damp clothing are attractive to the insects, and they often take up residence in storage units, garages and sheds. These insects are commonly found in dresser drawers, as well as closets. A female silverfish produces around 100 eggs in her lifetime and tends to hide them in cracks and other difficult-to-reach places. Silverfish nymphs hatch fully formed, and except for color and size, look like their adult counterparts.
Bees
Bees have been around since the days of dinosaurs. They have survived global changes such as the Ice Age, making them one of the heartiest creatures on earth. There are currently more than 20,000 different species of bees throughout the world. Each species of bee has a different function and purpose in balancing the ecosystem. They can be both beneficial and harmful to the environment, people, and pets.
Wasps
Hornet is a name applied to a group of social wasps that make their nests of papery material chewed from tree bark or plant foliage. The nest can be very large in size and can be surrounded by many tissue thin layers like a paper envelope. Three species of hornets commonly encountered are the Bald Faced Hornet, the European Hornet and the Yellow Jacket. This insect has three body parts: a head, thorax and abdomen (the latter of the two being separated by a narrow band) jointed legs, antennae and it belongs to the family Vespa.

Crickets
Crickets are one of the most common house pests. There are five main species of crickets that invade homes in the area. None of them are terribly devastating to houses, but they can be very annoying and lead to minor damage to homes. They can also invade homes in overwhelming numbers that can give be a real nuisance.
Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes have a four phase life cycle which can take four days to a month to complete with the female adult mosquito living up to 8 weeks.

Centipedes
True centipedes are predatory arthropods. Despite variations in appearance among the 2,500 known species worldwide, all share certain key features making them readily identifiable as members of the same class, Chilopoda. Centipedes have elongated, flattened, chitinous exoskeletons divided into segments. All but the final two segments bear a pair of jointed appendages.
Millipedes
Identifying a millipede infestation can be done by examining your plants and yard area. If there are areas with lots of mulch, grass clippings, or leaves, millipedes may be living there. Examine the leaves of your plants for unusual damage, and check seedlings to see if their outer coating is intact. If not, millipedes may be to blame. Though millipedes won’t harm humans beyond giving them a small rash, they can be devastating to gardens and may move into a building’s basement or stairwells.
Beetles
Carpet beetles are a common invasive pest in the St. Louis area. Carpet beetles are found throughout Midwest and seek shelter in cool, dark locations. Although they can live almost anywhere in a house, they often prefer baseboards, cracks in flooring, shelving, closets and furniture. They can enter a home under a door or through a crack but may also be carried inside with a plant or other amenable vessel.
Hornets
New queens emerge in the spring and begin to build a small paper nest in which eggs are laid. Once the eggs hatch from the first 30 to 50 brood cells, they are then cared for by the queen for approximately the next 20 days. The larvae mature, pupate and grow into new workers. The workers are actually infertile females that take over the responsibility of nest expansion, foraging for food, care of the queen, larvae and defense of the colony. There is a unique interdependent relationship between the workers and the larvae called Trophlaxis. The workers provide essential care for the larvae at the same time become dependent on the larvae for their survival. Adults primarily feed on sugar and carbohydrates, while larvae prefer a more carnivorous diet of meat, fish and other insects. The adult workers only hunt and kill to feed the larvae, who in turn produce a sugary substance that is then fed back to the adult. When the nest is at peak size by early fall, reproductive cells are built where fertilized males, called drones, and new queens are housed. Drones have no stingers and once fertilized become the male reproducers of the colony. Adult reproducers leave the colony and after mating, the males quickly die off while the newly fertilized queens seek hospitable shelter to over winter. These become next year’s queens. The rest of the entire population produced during the year will not survive the winter and will soon die. Hornets rarely, if ever, reuse last year’s nests.
Yellow Jackets
The Yellow Jacket is the smallest of the group being about a 1/2 inch in length but are fast fliers. They are black with yellow markings on their body (almost resembling stripes) they build their nest in low-lying structures or in the ground. The nest has one entrance point and multiple exit holes. They have a diet consisting mainly of sweets and protein. Yellow Jackets are potentially more aggressive toward humans because they are attracted to similar food sources, like the sugar in soda that collects around the rim of the can and human waste products like debris in a garbage can. It’s a good idea to always practice rigid cleanliness procedures around picnic areas.
Moths
The primary pantry-infesting insect you should keep an eye out for is the Indian Meal Moth. This is a small, brownish to tan insect with a light brown stripe across its midsection. The Indian Meal Moth is about 8 to 10 millimeters long and its wingspan can be 16 to 20 millimeters. You will typically find these moths in your flour, crackers, pasta, cereal, pet food, birdseed and other grain products. If you see these pests fluttering around your grains, check other rooms too. They can migrate from your kitchen into other rooms like the garage, where you might store your dog food or birdseed for example. They make their webby nests in hard-to-reach places like shelf brackets, behind door casing, baseboards, along the ceiling, in light sockets and any other small void. They might also be found in the folds and openings of your grain food packages.
Pantry Pests
Mites
Spider mites, or Tetranynchus urticae, are insect pests that infest most commonly on a wide range of plants and in hot, dry climates. Spider mites are extremely minuscule and barely reach 1/2 mm. The development stage that the spider mite goes through starts with an egg then evolves into a larvae. Before the spider mite grows into its full form, it begins to develop into a nymph, which is smaller than the adult-sized spider mite. Finally, the adult spider mite has formed. The body of a full-grown spider mite is oval-shaped with eight legs for mobility. Spider mites tend to be either red or green. However, the most common kind would be the two-spotted spider mite, which is light in color and has dark blotches on both the left and right sides of the abdomen.
Aphids
Ladybugs are omnivorous creatures that feast primarily on aphids and scale insects. Also on the menu are white fly, mealy bugs, mites, moth eggs, bollworm, broccoli worm and in some instances, each other. Aphids are considered to be a (microscopic) parasitic insect that lives on the underneath side of a plant leaf. Mother nature has given us a natural control agent against this well entrenched parasitic pest – ladybugs! Just in case this biological predator was ever to be in short supply, researches, biologists and scientists have introduced this insect into the environment in vast numbers. Ladybugs are now raised on farms, sold by green houses, bug stores, nature centers and in catalogues making them available to even novice gardeners. Widespread distribution of ladybug eggs has resulted in population explosions to the point where the control method itself has now become the nuisance.
Firebrats
Firebrats are scavengers that feed on a variety of food sources, comprised of mostly carbohydrates and starches. These include items such as book bindings, wallpaper paste, glue and crumbs. Firebrats are a hardy insect and can live for months without food. If a firebrat is sighted inside the home it is important to find the source of the infestation. Check areas that are dark and moist such as basements, attics, closets and other storage areas. Firebrat infestations are often marked by stains on wallpaper and fabric. If there is a large population, the damage may be considerable. Fortunately, firebrat populations tend to grow at a slow rate.
Boxelder Bugs
The box elder bug, or Boisea trivittatus, can be identified by orange and red marks on a black body. They are about 1/2-inch long and have three stripes behind the head. This North American species of true bug is also commonly referred to as a maple bug. Box elder bugs feed on low vegetation on the ground during early spring and summer. Around mid-July, they move to female box elder trees to feed on the seeds. By late summer, they leave these trees to begin searching for overwintering sites. This is when box elders may enter homes, and they tend to seek out buildings with sunny exposure. In fact, box elder bugs invade the sunny side of your home by the thousands. Infestations are more common after a warm spring followed by a hot, dry summer.
Palmetto Bugs
Nevertheless, all of these variations of Palmetto bugs share some commonalities including size in length (30 to 50 mm), dark color (reddish brown to black), ability to fly (especially toward light), and wide and glossy bodies. In addition, they all dwell in Palmetto trees, hence their name.

Raccoons
It is theorized that when raccoons contract a case of fleas they find a stick to bite on and swim out into a pond or stream, submerging their entire body except for their nose so they can still breathe. This would cause the flea to seek higher ground by climbing up the animal and eventually onto the stick. The animal then releases the stick with the fleas on it and swims back to shore. Birds

Rodents

Mice
The mouse is one of the most well-known and troublesome house pests. A small rodent with round ears, pointed snout, and a long tail, mice often like to take up residence in homes where warmth and food are readily available. House mice like to build nests of soft materials and are often found near a food source within the home. While they prefer grains, cereals, and foods high in fat, they will eat almost any household items. They can also thrive easily without much food, which makes them an especially troublesome pest to eradicate.
Rats
Rats live in a pack (or mischief) which is usually dominated by one member, often a male known as the alpha male. His job is to protect the rat herd from predators, find food and to reproduce. Common species are opportunistic survivors and usually live in close proximity to humans. This class relationship to humans is called commensal. (Ecologically speaking, one benefits and the other does not). Commensalism means sharing of food (a more precise translation is to share the table) in human social interaction. This term describes the use of waste food by secondary animals. Rats can be distinguished from mice by their overall size, relatively large feet, longer and thicker tail, elongated snout and a noticeable arch in their back when they walk or are frightened.
Squirrels
There are many types of fleas, however, the most common is the cat flea. The name is deceptive, though, as cat fleas can feed on many host organisms such as deer, rabbits, raccoons, squirrels, dogs and humans. Fleas can be transmitted from pet to pet, be dropped from a wild animal when crossing your yard, picked up in the environment when your pet is out for a walk or brought in by people who are unwitting carriers. A flea has three pairs of legs with the last pair being well-adapted for jumping. They are “hinged,” allowing them to be cocked like a spring and released thus, enabling a flea to jump up to 100 times the length of their body. Nature gives this insect the advantage in making a leap of faith, while trying to attach to a host. Once fleas are introduced into your home or yard they quickly begin to multiply. First the fleas lay eggs, which become reproductive adults in about 14 days. An adult female can lay up to 50 eggs per day, which then hatch and become reproductive in 14 more days. A flea population can begin to grow exponentially and rapidly.
