Preventive Care

Dental Care
Placed under anesthesia. Pre-anesthetic laboratory screening may be warranted depending on age and overall health of a pet. While anesthetized, our patients will receive intravenous fluids and will have their vitals monitored by one of our Registered Veterinary Technicians. A thorough oral exam will be performed documenting any abnormalities. Our veterinarians will then make recommendations on an individual case basis. If no additional procedures are warranted, a routine cleaning will be performed. This involves scaling, above and below the gum line, ultrasonically and/or by hand, and polishing to ensure a smooth surface resistant to plaque buildup. Your pet’s mouth will then be charted as part of a permanent record for reference if future dentals are warranted. Finally, a fluoride treatment is applied to promote healthy enamel.

Vaccination
Much like dogs and cats, these pets need wellness visits to ensure overall health. With exotics, biannual visits are recommended. Whether you are a new exotic pet owner or are adding to your current exotic family, a comprehensive physical exam is important. Many exotic species are good at concealing illnesses that may go undetected without appropriate examinations. With your wellness visit, you will receive a comprehensive physical examination, husbandry and nutritional counseling, parasite screening, vaccinations when applicable, and any additional medical testing warranted to assure you have a healthy exotic pet.

Monitored by registered veterinary technicians. The technician assigned to your pet will chart vital signs throughout the entire anesthetic experience. Vital signs that are monitored include: heart rate and rhythm (EKG), respiratory rate, body temperature, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation of blood (pulse oximetry). By closely monitoring your pet while anesthetized, we are able to identify any changes in the cardiovascular system and adjust anesthesia and fluid therapy accordingly. This will lead to a safer anesthetic experience and promote a better overall recovery. For the critically ill patient, we have an intensive care unit for monitoring our patients more closely post-operatively.

Treatment and prognosis often lies in early detection. We have the ability to diagnose and design a cancer treatment protocol exclusive to your pet. When applicable, surgical removal is always ideal (recommended). For non-surgical cancers, chemotherapy options are available. Our veterinarians will discuss in detail your pet’s disease, prognosis and treatment options. If treatment is elected, we will be there throughout the entire process, answering questions and offering guidance on what is best for you and your beloved pet.

Wound and Fracture Care

Dr. Emerman grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio with her parents, her sister, and their dogs. During her childhood, she was very active in sports and outdoor activities. Dr. Emerman attended The Ohio State University for a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Russian Literature. She continued her education at Ohio State, completing her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine in 2019. Her special interests include internal medicine, endoscopy, and soft tissue surgery, and exotic and avian medicine and surgery. Dr. Emerman is an active member of the Ohio Veterinary Medical Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Animal Hospital Association, and the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians.
