Established in 1860, Shaw's Supermarkets is one of the largest grocery groups in New England. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Supervalu, a Minnesota-based grocery retailer and distributor. Shaw's Supermarkets and its sister store, Star Market, operate more than 200 stores and employ over 30,000 people throughout Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. It sells more than 3,000 different products, including bakery, dairy, deli, floral, grocery, liquor, meat, pharmacy, fresh produce, seafood, and health and beauty care products, as well as frozen foods and snacks. Some of its own brands include essensia, Wild Harvest, equaline, Happy Tails and HomeLife. It supports various local programs throughout New England, which benefit schools, children and health initiatives. Shaw's Supermarkets has one of its stores located in Windham, Maine.
