Teeth Cleaning
We give thorough, comprehensive clinical examinations to every new patient at Burns Family Dentistry. This evaluation inspects gums, bone and teeth through our state of the art digital radiographs and intraoral cameras. The dentists at Burns Family Dentistry do full oral cancer screenings during this initial exam. After your examination, we reserve up to 60 minutes to conduct a consult, during which you may or may not have a dental cleaning, solely depending on how long it had been since your last scheduled dentist appointment. During this appointment, any of your treatment needs will be explained and addressed with a treatment plan. We are passionate about providing dedicated service to our patients and we take pride in providing the finest advice and course of treatment.
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride: the most effective agent available to help prevent tooth decay. It is a mineral that is naturally present in almost all water supplies. The benefits of fluoride have been well known for over fifty years and are supported by many health and professional organizations. Although most people receive fluoride from faucet water, sometimes it is not enough to prevent decay. For those patients, we recommend fluoride treatments as part of their overall preventative plan.

Fillings
A common misconception is that an amalgam filling will last forever. We consider a filling to be failing when it no longer seals out bacteria. This will result in eventual cracking or a cavity forming under the filling. Fillings have to withstand an incredible amount of biting force. Over time they become worn, shrink, crack and the edges wear away. When a filling fails, we perform a thorough examination and present options for replacement. We then decide together which restorative material is the best long term option for you. This ensures that you will have healthy teeth and a happy smile.
Resin Composite
We can choose from several different materials when your teeth need a restoration. These materials include, amalgam, composite resin, gold, porcelain and porcelain fused to metal. Amalgam is strong, durable and quick. Composite resin is a mixture of plastic resin and microscopic particles that are bonded to the tooth so it requires less removal of the tooth during filling procedures than amalgam. We can also match the color of composite resin to your teeth. Gold is strong and durable and often used for crowns in patient’s that have a habit of grinding or clenching their teeth together. It is gentle on the opposing teeth. Porcelain is also a strong material used to create crowns; this material can be colored to match the shade of your natural teeth.

Crowns
Typically, when your tooth suffers damage, a dental crown is placed. A dental crown is essentially a tooth cap that covers the entire visible portion of your natural tooth, providing strength and protection. Crowns usually require two dental visits, however, and you have to wear a temporary crown while you wait for your final restoration. At Burns Family Dentistry, we are proud to present same day crowns with CEREC restorations.
Bridges

Root Canal Treatment
After careful case selection, we will decide to either treat your tooth with root canal therapy, refer you to an Endodontist or a “root canal specialist”. This criteria includes the position of the tooth, number of canals present in the roots, whether the roots are straight or curvy and whether the canal is constricted or not.

Deep Cleaning
When you have active periodontal disease, standard cleanings just don’t cut it. This problematic disease is tucked away under the gum line and requires special attention. Our dentists use instruments to remove plaque and tarter from under your gums. Patients often receive some sort of numbing medication to provide a comfortable experience. Our dentist’s commonly apply fluoride afterwards to clean out the infected areas. This procedure makes your gums healthier, allowing them to heal and tighten around your teeth.

Dentures
A partial denture is a good treatment plan when many teeth in an arch are missing. Partials are removable appliances that are held in place by clasps, that fit around some of the remaining teeth. Once the supporting teeth are shaped, we take impressions of your mouth to create an accurate model. We confirm with you to make sure this partial denture fits comfortably and securely. When the partial is ready, you’ll try it in and we make any necessary adjustments. Partial dentures prevent teeth from shifting, balance your bite and provide support for your lips and cheeks, which helps you speak clearly and look your best.
Overdentures
Another procedure that is an alternative to a full set of complete dentures is called an overdenture. An overdenture uses strategically placed implants to hold the denture in place. Anywhere between 4 to 6 implants are necessary for an upper denture and usually only 2 implants are needed for a lower denture. Once the implants are placed and healing complete, the final impressions can be taken and we will order the abutments that screw into your implants. These abutments will extend above the gum tissue just slightly for the denture to attach to them. The denture will then “snap” in and out with ease but has enough retention that normal chewing will not dislodge the denture. This is a great restorative option because it maintains bone health and increases your joy and confidence while eating.

Dental Implants
A single implant procedure begins with creating a channel in the bone to receive the implant. We then place the body of the implant into the prepared channel. Depending on the case of the patient, we may place a cover on the implant or a healing abutment to help shape the gums. It then becomes a waiting process for the implant to heal and become securely fused to the bone. Once secure, we schedule a series of appointments to fabricate your final restoration. Situations vary, but they usually include a final impression appointment and a final delivery appointment. This implant crown prevents surrounding teeth from shifting and keeps you from having to reduce neighboring teeth. With proper home care and regular check-ups, your implant can be a long term solution for a long lasting smile.

A dental implant is a treatment option for replacing missing teeth. Implants are small titanium posts that replace the roots of missing teeth. Here they serve as the anchor for the “replacement teeth”. We decide if an implant is right for you by providing a thorough oral examination and discussing your health history – certain medical conditions can prevent you from being a candidate for dental implants. We’ll also determine if you need any additional procedures such as bone grafting or gum surgery to aid in the success of your implant. We do not place implants at our practice but will provide a comprehensive treatment plan/referral and coordinate the implant restoration with the specialist. Tooth Extractions
This is the removal of a tooth that is decayed, diseased, fractured or otherwise damaged and cannot be saved. Extractions are necessary to eliminate pain as well as prevent damage to the surrounding teeth and gums. Baby teeth extractions may also be necessary for some young patients to allow enough room for other permanent teeth to erupt or to start orthodontic treatment. Our experienced dentists use delicate care to ensure the most painless experience for our patients during extraction. We conduct follow up visits to check on the state of the mouth following this procedure and ensure that the mouth is healing properly.

General Dentistry
Eric William Burns was born and raised in the suburbs of New Orleans, LA. Upon completion of high school in Algiers, Dr. Burns enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served 6 years active duty in Hawaii and Okinawa, Japan. He attended Southeastern Louisiana State University in Hammond, LA for his Bachelor of Science Degree. During his college years he also served in the Louisiana Army Reserve National Guard. Dr. Burns attended Louisiana State University School of Dentistry in New Orleans for his Doctorate of Dental Surgery. After graduation, Dr. Burns returned to active duty with the United States Army for four years. He was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina as a military dentist and as an associate in private practice in Fayetteville. In 2010, Dr. Burns started working in Wilmington and after about a year of associating, purchased this wonderful practice w his wife Casey. He currently serves in the U.S Army Reserves as a dental instructor at the Joint Special Operations Medical Training Center and has served our U.S military for 29 years combined service including two war time deployments. He is a member of the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, North Carolina Dental Society, Cape Fear Dental Society (local chapter), American Academy of Facial Esthetics, and CEREC Doctors Club.
