I travel frequently to London and always miss the incredible Indian food they serve. I have tried every Indian restaurant in San Diego and Gourmet India is the first that matches the quality of London; However, Gourmet India has is own uniqueness that you will not find in London. The food is geared more toward hot weather climates, so Londoners will find a number of items on the menu that they never see in the UK. They also have a number of incredible beers from all parts of India. I recommend the India Special, which is about two 12 oz beers in volume. This is also a great place for vegetarians or vegans as is provides many dining options. The location is very close to the parking garage in Horton Plaza (to the right of the main parking entrance on 4th and F Streets). You can park in Horton Plaza and validate your ticket in the Mall for three hours of free parking. The ambiance is not a fancy as some of its downtown competition, but the great food, lower prices, better customer service, and fun people watching from the outdoor dining area more than compensate. Gourmet India charges extra for rice (so do most Indian restaurants in San Diego), but the rice high quality and is prepared as a dish. I recommend the vegetable rice of the day. My favorite appetizer is Uttapam, which is a popular griddle cake from Bombay, made from cream of wheat, topped with tomatoes, onions, light green chili, cilantro, served with sambar soup and coconut chutney. I also recommend the Mulgutany Soup with chicken, but is also comes with vegetables. The soup is a lentil of the day cooked with ginger, onion, tomatoes and coconut milk. All of the curries are excellent and homemade. The chef/owner will also make nearly anything upon request. I occasionally ask for chicken yogurt saffron, which is not on the menu. I also like to order Chicken Tikka Masala, a marinated tandoor cooked boneless chicken, served in a tomato saffron sauce. The Murg Korma is also spectacular. It has boneless pieces of chicken cooked in an enticing cream sauce with nuts and raisins. The lunch buffet is basic and very nice, but I prefer ordering from the menu. If you like Indian cuisine, I highly recommend Gourmet India! I also recommend reading this review: http://www.sandiegoreader.com/news/2006/oct/18/where-frankie/
Last week, friend of mine and I were walking on market street. and we heard this Indian music so we just walked in and we didn't even plan to eat but the environment made us hungry. It was saturday evening so they had a special sitar player playing the traditional indian tunes. And on request we could get a table near the sitar player, dat was awesome. In dinner we had chiken tikka masala, a vegetable curry (that day was saag panner which is spinach and cottage cheese), daal curry, papadum, salad with raita dressing and dessert which was gulabjamun. And also, we ordered garlic naan for each of us and mango lassi for dinks. The food was wordless, amazing. One word to describe the food is "WOW" and for the customer service "excellent" and for the environment "amazing". Food is not spicy. It was perfect and as per our expected spice level, also here you have a choice to choose b/w mild, med, hot or indian hot ;)... Their servers are friendly and always smiling. Excellent vegetable curry and the "BEST" chicken tikka masala in TOWN! I will be having my next family party over there in few weeks. I guarantee, all my guests will love there food. Royal India is the BEST INDIAN CUISINE in the town... PS: I strongly recommend Indian food lovers to visit this place if you really want to eat good quality and tasty food in your life with the real feel of Indian style food!!!!!!"
I went to this Indian Restaurant and realized how delicious indian food is. And thats all because of the good quality and good quantity food. Well, I am concerned to sit on the computer and write about it so you can imagine how good the food was. The service was EXCELLENT. NO WORDS.. Though it was busy saturday night but still It didn't took them much time to seat me so that was very impressing to me. If you do go there please try there chicken tikka masala, and veg. bhajis. This is the only place where I got the papdums in the starting with the two different kinds of chutneys. They were amazing as since we were starving of hunger so that relievd us a bit. The service and servers were also too good and also our order didn't took much time to come and the spices were as per our requirement.. dats amazing.I cant handle too much spice so it was good for my tummy. Naan was soo fresh and soft. Saag paneer was not too oily at all - good for my tummy again it was equally dilicious. I wish to come here everyday.. Go to this place once and try the food once. ITS WORTH IT! I AM HOOKED!!!! whenever i go never feel like coming bak..... dnt miss. try fast :)
Having a daughter in our family was a dream for my husband and on her birthday my husband wanted the best venue for her birthday party specially when it comes to our precious daughter. We would say it would have been impossible without the support of Sam Kambo and Jag Kambo owners of Royal India, they told us to let them know what is needed and just relax and come to the party as guests and they would take care of everything. There were about 100 of us and it was a DJ party with appetizers Samosa, Tandoori Chicken, vegetable pakoras and main course Chicken tikka masala, punjabi saag, Karahi chicken and Lamb curry with Nan and garlic nan and two desserts fantastic gulab jamun and rus malai. Everything was delivered as expected the guested just could not stop eating and stop praising the food. DJ did a woundeful job making everyone move we are so happy and thankful to the whole Royal India team who made our daughter's 1st birthday memorable. We will be back
Two thumbs up for this Indian Restaurant. This is a great place. The owner was super nice, probably the nicest owner I have met. He was attentive also visited our table to make sure we are comfortable and having a wonderful time. The food was good. It was as per our spice level. We went on saturday evenings that's one of the busiest days, and restaurant was also very busy but still we were provided with the table 5 minutes later. This was awesome.Naan is reaaaaaaaallllllllllly good and fresh. In fact their menu of different Naan is quite impressive. There is a great selection of authentic Indian food served in generous portions with wonderful service.Food is EXCELLENT. No doubt about it, the authenticity of this place is unquestionable. The servers are all very nice. Great place to grab a bite. I will definately be back!
Me and the missus went there last night and have to say enjoyed ourselves ever so much. After discreetly proposing to my now fianc, one of the waiter's informed Sam Kambo and Jag Kambo and they came out to congratulate us. That pretty much set the tone of the evening. We were recommended the Shrimp Butter Tarka, which was just delicious, the tarka dahl was subtle and not overpowering (which in some places it can be). We also had some Saag Paneer and mixed veg, which sometimes can be overcooked in restaurants - not here: they were fresh, tender and sublime. If last night was anything to go by this place certainly deserves all the awards and accolades it receives. The service was beyond compare, and the food delicious. I would definitely recommend this place
Having been taken to this resteraunt by a close friend I didnt know what to expect. Now I cant stop from going back at least once a month. From the very aluring decor of the tables to the rainfall fountain I can not think of a better place to take friends or family. The staff are wonderful and helpful in answering all of your questions if this happens to be your first time enjoying Indian. The price of the food is worth the entire experience. This place is not for the casual dinner, I would recommend looking nice when setting foot into this establishment, but if you are looking to impress Royal India is the place to go. Though this restaurant doesn't has any specific requiremet for the outfits, i just enjoy every moment while going there..
this is a lovely restaurant, the dishes were exquisite....Excellent Food! Very delicious espically the chicken vindaloo and chees and peas!! Vindaloo was amazing! the spice transcended my mind. I feel relaxed, fully satisfied....VERY GOOD, FRIENDLY SERVICE... LOVELY, ADORABLE ENVIRONMENT... I'm the customer here from past few months...Excellent service...servers are alwayz active and smiling... And aslo, we mentioned that we are sharing the dishes but not the peas pualo..so one of the waitress left the pualo next to me. That was so sweet and kind of her..... For dessert we had gulab jamun and rasmalai..... that was awesome.. I really loved it... Its worth to go back...Will come back again! for sure, sure sure :):):)
Nice variety of items on the menu Signature cocktails pair well with the Indian dishes On the recommendation of one of my daughter's teachers, we went to Royal India. I love Indian food and I really enjoyed their Indian food. Yes, they are the Best. I have to tell you that the only reason it is getting five stars is because I never enjoyed another restaurant as this one. The best part , they ask you how spicy you want your food; they give you a three-curry caddy with some crispy peppery cracker-like stuff which probably has a name but I don't know it; the ambiance is more to my taste; they have a wonderful; music played in the baground; the music isn't playing really loud also, feels gud to ears; and the food is
