Bladder Cancer
Bladder cancer is the sixth most prevalent cancer in the United States accounting for more than 70,000 reported cases annually and more than 12,000 deaths. Over the past several years there has been a rising incidence in the diagnosis of bladder cancer. Cigarette smoking and industrial chemical exposure are regarded as the major risk factors.
Urology
A medical and surgical specialty that focuses on the urinary tracts of both male and females and also on the reproductive system of males. Physicians who are trained in the field of Urology are called Urologists. They diagnose, treat and manage patients with disorders of the kidneys, adrenal glands, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra, prostate, testes and other reproductive organs.
Kidney Cancer
The most common tumor of the kidney is renal cell carcinoma. Renal cancers represent 2% of all cancers diagnosed annually in the United States representing more than 50,000 new cases a year. It is most commonly diagnosed in the 5th to 7th decades of life and it accounts for 12,000 deaths per year. Risk factors include smoking, family history, polycystic kidney disease and renal failure.
Kidney Stones
The incidence of having had stone disease can be as high as 12% by the age of 70. Males are afflicted at 3 times the rate of women with the peak incidence occurring during the third decade of life. Stone disease has a tremendous impact on the workforce. Kidney stones are responsible for countless days of lost productivity not to mention the debility of experiencing one or more of these excruciating episodes of flank pain and blood in the urine.
Testicular Cancer
There are no ways to prevent testicular cancer, as it is not clear what causes testicular cancer in the majority of cases. However, there are ways to improve the chances of early detection, and therefore enhancing your chances of treatment. Some doctors recommend that you conduct regular self-examinations in order to identify testicular cancer at its earliest stage. If you choose to do so, the optimal opportunity to self-examine is after a warm bath or shower. This is when the scrotum is most relaxed. If you find a lump, call your doctor.
Cervical Cancer
On 10/16/2009, Merck, the drug maker, announced the FDA approval of the vaccine Gardasil to prevent genital warts in boys and young men. Previously, the product was approved to prevent genital warts and cervical cancer in girls and women.
Prostate Cancer
Men with a family history of prostate cancer (brothers, uncles, fathers, grandfathers,cousins) why not consider genetic testing for a personalized risk profile analysis.

Multiple Sclerosis
There are many medical conditions when the bladder does not function properly. Irritability of the bladder may result in frequency of urination and inability to retain urine. Some neurologic conditions such as Multiple sclerosis (MS) and Parkinson’s disease may deliver inappropriate or exaggerated signals to the bladder. Patients with long-standing diabetes may develop a “sleepy” bladder and retain extraordinary large volumes of urine. Following radical urologic or colorectal surgery, the bladder may become dysfunctional either temporarily or permanently. Urodynamics helps to define the bladder dysfunction.

Mental Health

Ultrasound
Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) utilizes a finger-like probe which is placed in the rectum in order to image the prostate. A prostate biopsy uses a thin needle through the rectum into the prostate for removal of core biopsies under ultrasonic guidance. TRUS allows for improved sampling of prostate tissue when a prostate biopsy is performed. This routine procedure is performed in our office. The prostate biopsies are examined by a group of highly qualified pathologists at Saint Barnabas Medical Center.
MRI
We are pleased to offer MRI FUSION biopsies of the prostate to accurately target suspicious zones by linking MRI and ultrasound technology for precise tissue sampling.
Radiology
Computed Tomography
Blood in the urine and flank pain may be symptoms leading to investigative studies. While many patients are asymptomatic at diagnosis, the increased use of ultrasound and CT scan has helped to identify many of these incidental early stage renal tumors. Renal cell carcinoma is curable and the best results are achieved in those patients diagnosed early with small tumors. Radical Nephrectomy is the treatment for localized tumors confined to the kidney.
Chemotherapy
The majority of bladder cancers involves the superficial lining of the bladder and can be managed effectively. The high risk of recurrences mandates a strict surveillance program. Other treatments may include intravesical chemotherapy. Tumors involving the muscle wall will require cystectomy with or without chemotherapy and radiation.

Laparoscopy

Lesions
Lesions in the bladder can be biopsied and fulgurated, stones in the bladder can be crushed and ureteral stents can be inserted or removed via the cystoscope.
