He left NIH in 1975 to become Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics, Director of the Center for Molecular Nutrition and Sensory Disorders and Clinical Director of The Taste and Smell Clinic at the Georgetown University Medical Center. There he developed a program devoted to the anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the senses of taste and smell and to the physiology, biochemistry and pathology of saliva and nasal mucus.

Answer 2: Dr. Henkin was elected to the most prestigious clinical research organization in the US, the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He is also a charter member of the Biophysical Society and a member in good standing of many scientific and clinical organizations including the American Physiology Society, the American Society for Nutrition Science and the American Society of Clinical Nutrition. He is an editor of several scientific journals including Biological Trace Element Research. He has served as a reviewer for most major medical and scientific journals including Science, Journal of American Medical Association, American Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine and the Journal of the American Society for Clinical Nutrition. He has served as a consultant to several institutes of NIH and to the USDA program in nutrition. He has been awarded numerous prizes for his work in neuroendocrinology and in taste and smell research and treatment. He is a frequent lecturer at medical centers both nationally and internationally and received the distinction of being a national lecturer for the scientific honorary society Sigma Xi for a period of two years, perhaps the only scientist to be so honored.
Endoscopy
Most problems related to taste and smell dysfunction is not manifested by any obvious anatomical changes in the head or neck. However, in order to evaluate any possible physical component of your symptoms a detailed examination of your head and neck is performed at The Clinic. This involves examination of external and internal tissues of your head, eyes, nose, mouth, throat, nose and neck. Specialized examinations of your nose may be performed using endoscopy and biopsies of nasal or lingual tissues may be performed if necessary to establish your diagnosis. Other examinations are also performed as necessary to insure that all aspects of your problem are fully evaluated.

If your taste and smell dysfunction is a symptom of an underlying disease process, after this process is diagnosed, treatment of the process will usually correct your symptoms. For example, patients with hypothyroidism may have taste and smell dysfunction as the major symptoms of this process; through use of diagnostic tests this process can be determined, hormone treatment instituted and the taste and smell dysfunction corrected.

Because smell function is difficult to measure we developed a novel technique by which smell function can be obtained in an objective manner. The technique we developed uses functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the brain in response to specific odors in order to obtain quantitative measurements of activation in different parts of the brain and to obtain brain maps of the location of regions in the brain that are activated during olfactory stimulation.

Lesions
Oral burning is a complex series of symptoms associated with a usual persistent burning sensation in the oral cavity. It usually comes on spontaneously without a specific etiology, but it occurs more frequently in older women. It usually involves the tongue hence the name glossopyrosis. But it can also include several structures in the mouth including gums, palette, cheeks, and lips, thereby the term oropyrosis. There are usually no oral lesions associated with the burning, although it is commonly associated with an abnormal taste in the absence of food hence the name phantageusia. This sensation is also unpleasant and is commonly described as bitter, metallic or burned associated with the oral burning.
