There are many causes of dry eye syndrome. Environmental causes such as low humidity, pollution, and allergies contribute to dry eye. Certain medications, especially for depression and allergies, can cause dry eye. Computer use and some medical conditions, including Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sjogren’s Syndrome, and Parkinson’s Disease, can also lead to, or worsen dry eye syndrome.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness in the world. It is an eye disease of the optic nerve. This nerve carries visual information from the eye to the brain. The disease affects peripheral vision first.

A cataract is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens. As we age, the lens becomes cloudy and vision becomes blurred. Common symptoms of cataract include: blurry vision without pain, fading of colors, glare, light sensitivity, worsening night vision, and difficulty reading in dim light. Not everybody experiences all of these symptoms.
Cataract Surgery
Both Dr. Frank Ashburn and Dr. Melanie Buttross diagnose cataracts and perform cataract surgery using the latest techniques, most modern equipment. Surgery is performed on an outpatient basis.
Eye Exam
A comprehensive eye examination is carried out by your ophthalmologist and usually takes about 60 minutes. Sometimes it can take longer if you need extra tests, but this is to make sure you can see as well as possible.

He attended the University of Richmond, where he met his wife, pediatrician Dr. Christy Ashburn. Following a year of bench research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, he attended Tulane University School of Medicine, graduating in 2012. Dr. Ashburn completed a general surgery internship at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center before returning home to Georgetown University and Washington Hospital Center to complete his ophthalmology residency. Dr. Ashburn then moved on to the University of Virginia for his glaucoma fellowship, where he trained in the latest minimally-invasive techniques for glaucoma surgery. He returns to Washington as one of the only surgeons in the area certified in the XEN glaucoma micro-stent procedure.
Reconstructive Surgery
A native Washingtonian, Dr. Lauren Gavaris graduated from the Holton-Arms School, and received her medical degree at the George Washington University School of Medicine. She completed her ophthalmology training at the Washington Hospital Center/Georgetown University. After her residency, Dr. Gavaris completed her Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at the Sinai Hospital of Baltimore.

Lip Augmentation
He was also a pioneer in using Botox® to treat facial spasms in addition to its use for facial wrinkles. In addition, he performs many in office procedures including filler injections and lip augmentation. Dr. Gavaris is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Oculoplastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, and was named as one of Northern Virginia’s top plastic surgeons.
Cosmetic Surgery
Dr. Gavaris’ services range from reconstructive surgery of the eyelids, eyebrows, tear duct surgery, thyroid eye disease, eyelid tumors, and facial trauma. She also performs cosmetic surgery of the eyelids and eyebrows.

Skin Cancer
Our oculoplastic surgeons, Dr. Paul Gavaris and Dr. Lauren Gavaris, have completed ophthalmology training as well as additional surgical training. This makes them uniquely qualified to address abnormal eyelid position and contour, reconstruction of the lids following skin cancer removal, burns, or trauma.
