Our podiatrist will examine your feet and likely take x-rays to identify your specific condition. Occasionally, an MRI is ordered to provide more detailed imaging of your foot and ankle. Conservative (non-surgical) treatment for heel pain often includes stretching, appropriate shoe gear, icing, anti-inflammatory medication, custom orthotics, avoiding barefoot walking, night splints, physical therapy and/or steroid injections. If conservative treatment fails or is deemed inappropriate for your condition, then surgical options are discussed.

There are many different surgical procedures for bunion deformities. In our office, your podiatrist will review your x-rays with you and determine the best treatment option for your specific condition, life style, and goals. Bunion surgery is performed by your podiatrist at either a hospital or surgical center. Patients go home the same day and follow up in the office weekly or every other week for evaluation and post-surgical care. Bunions
Custom orthotics may be prescribed by your podiatrist for several conditions, such as, heel pain, flat feet, high arches, leg length differences, bunions, and neuromas. They are used to correct an abnormal gait or walking pattern, make shoes more comfortable, and allow people to stand, walk, play sports, and run more efficiently. Orthotics are also prescribed for diabetic patients with foot deformities to prevent ulcerations (wounds) and infection.
Toe Surgery
Hammertoes are deformities of the smaller toes of the foot. The middle joint of the toe is bent, resembling a hammer. Hammertoes can cause thickened toenails and corns or calluses on the top of the toe or at the tip of the toe. If diabetic, these corns and calluses can lead to ulceration (sores) and infection. Pain may be experienced to the toes or the ball of the foot. Many people with hammer toes have difficulty finding comfortable shoes. Hammertoes can become painful and rigid or inflexible and require surgical correction. There are many different surgical procedures for hammer toe deformities. In our office, your podiatrist will review your x-rays with you and determine the best treatment option for your specific condition, life style, and goals. Hammer toe surgery may be performed by your podiatrist at a hospital, a surgical center. Patients go home the same day and follow up in the office weekly or every other week for post-surgical evaluation and care. Patients are able to bear weight and walk after hammer toe surgery, but are advised to limit their activity for up to 4 weeks.
Ingrown Toenails
A podiatrist also called a Foot Doctor or doctor of podiatric medicine is a specialist who provides medical diagnosis and treatment of foot and ankle problems, such as bunions, heel pain, spurs, hammertoes, neuromas, ingrown toenails, warts, corns, and calluses. A foot doctor also renders care of sprains, fractures, infections, and injuries of the foot, ankle, and heel. In addition to undergraduate medical school training, podiatrists also attend graduate school for a doctorate degree in podiatry. Podiatrists are required to take state and national exams, as well as be licensed by the state in which they practice.

Corns
Warts are benign skin lesions due to a viral infection known as the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). The virus generally invades the skin through small cuts and abrasions. Warts can be painful and are often mistaken for corns or calluses. They can appear anywhere on the skin, but are commonly found on the bottom of the foot (plantar warts). Approximately 50% of warts may resolve without treatment over a two year period, however, treatment is recommended to prevent spread of the infection to the feet and other people.

Here at Suburban Podiatry Associates, our goal is to prevent complications due to diabetes. Therefore, we advise our diabetic patients to make appointments for routine foot screening and care every ten weeks. During these visits we examine patients’ feet and provide palliative foot care. Routine foot care includes nail, callus, and corn trimming, as well as, ingrown toenail treatment. This helps to prevent skin breakdown and infections. We also evaluate the feet for deformities that can lead to calluses, skin breakdown, ulcerations (wounds), infection, and amputation. These foot deformities may be treated with accommodative orthotics shoes to pad and take pressure off of bony areas. Your podiatrist may also suggest surgical correction of foot deformities if they are causing ulcers and infections.
Fungus
Fungal Toenail Treatment (Onycomycosis) is a serious condition involving fungal infection of the toenails. This infection is acquired by contact with a fungal element. Some common soarces of fungus are bathroom surfaces, locker room surface and bodily contact. Onycomycosis is also acquired by the spread of fungus from a athletes foot fungus infection of the skin. Diagnosis of this condition is easily made by a simple toenail biopsy which is performed in our office. There are many treatments for Onycomycosis. Successful treatment often involves combined therapies. Our podiatrists are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of this condition and our treatment outcomes are excellant. Effective treatments that we offer include: Painless Laser treatment, Oral and Topical anti-fungal treatment, Surgical treatment, Patient education and prevention protocols.

Rigid orthotics are designed to control function and are primarily worn in conventional shoes. They are composed of thin firm materials such as plastic or carbon fiber and are usually three quarter length to accommodate for different shaped shoes, i.e. pointed toe or round toe. These orthotics are used to improve or eliminate strains, aches, and pains in the feet, legs, thighs, and lower back. Semi-Rigid OrthoticsSemi-rigid orthotics provide foot balance for walking, running and participating in sports. Sometimes, different sports call for different types of semi-rigid orthotics. The typical semi-rigid orthotic is made of layered soft materials and reinforced with more rigid materials. Children are prescribed this type of orthotic to treat flatfeet, in-toeing, out-toeing, and bunions. Athletes are often prescribed these orthotics to improve function and alleviate pain while training and competing. Construction workers or individuals who work on hard surfaces are often prescribed a well cushioned orthotic with a reinforced rigid supportive arch. Insurance CoverageCustom foot orthotics may be covered by your health insurance company. Some plans cover one to two pairs per year or may be unlimited. If this is the case, custom orthotics can be prescribed specifically for your work shoes and your athletic shoes. Once your podiatrist has diagnosed your foot condition and has prescribed custom orthotics, our office staff will help you through the insurance coverage process.

Fungus Toenails

Topicals such as tea tree oil, Vick’s ointment or anti-fungal nail polishes have less than 2% efficiency if you apply them regularly on your nail for several months.

Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown toe nails are a result of nail borders or margins that dig painfully into the skin, sometimes causing infection. Symptoms include redness, swelling, drainage, and pain. Ingrown toenails are frequently caused by improper nail trimming,but can also be caused by shoe pressure, injury, fungal infection, and poor foot structure. Infected ingrown toe nails are trimmed and drained under sterile technique with local anesthetic in the office. If the ingrown toenail is chronic or reoccurring, then a permanent corrective procedure for the removal of the offending nail border can be performed while keeping the rest of the nail normal. Patients are able to walk and return to normal activity and work right away. Toenail pain is never a normal occurrence and can potentially lead to infection or other complications.
