The Chaya restaurant family originated when Hikage Chaya opened in Hayama, Japan. From this initial tea house, that opened 390 years ago, the Tsunoda family has expanded into French bistros and pastry shops throughout Japan and introduced the brand to the U.S. in 1984 with the opening of Chaya Brasserie in Beverly Hills. Since then, Chaya has opened locations in Venice, San Francisco, Downtown Los Angeles, and LAX. The cuisine at each restaurants can best be described as modern Japanese though each restaurant has a distinct personality reflecting their different locations. Corporate Executive Chef, Shigefume Tachibe is best known for pioneering modern Japanese cuisine and his contributions to the Asian-Fusion movement. His chef coat and knife are in permanent display in the Smithsonian. The most important tenet of Chaya's philosophy is high-level omotenashi (hospitality), bringing the Japanese teahouse tradition of warm and personal service to each guest.

wow!!!!! i'm not much in to writing reviews, but the food and service at this restaurant is great. from the time you first walk-in they make you feel at home. when i got back from iraq i made sure one of my first stops was chaya venice's. chaya venice's team members keep up the great food and work.thank you

I was always curious about thi...

I was always curious about this place since the restaurants have Japanese chefs and when I heard about Garlic Fair, I decided to take the opportunity to check this place out. My friend and I had a 8:15 p.m. reservation on Saturday and the place was packed. W/o reservation, it would have been 45 minutes wait. Even with reservation, we waited about 15 minutes to be seated.

We wanted to try many different dishes we decided to pick three appetizers from Garlic menu and one pasta from regular menu to share. Everything was sooooo good! This place reminded me of a hip restaurant in Tokyo. I would definitely come back here to try their regular menu.

never in a rush

I had a business dinner where I needed a setting to discuss things without shouting over obnoxious music or being bothered to death. The Waiters here were extremely professional, very personable and never in a rush.

It used to be top notched.

I remember when I used to take a client or friend to Chaya and the wait staff was amazing and sweet, the food impeccable and a generally very enjoyable experience.

I hope my experience of last night is not a sign it is on the decline and just an anomaly, but I had a horrible experience and feel someone should know about it.

My wife and I took out of town clients out for dinner at Chaya and the waiter copped an attitude when I asked for no salt on the grilled fish. I hate doing that, but I have a very, very serious heart problem and can not have much salt.

The attitude was mirrored by the kitchen when my plate came the grilled fish was salted anyway, the vegetables looked like they found them in the trash and the were chopped with no finesse, bad tasting (woody carrots and tasteless) and it was plated like a crappy diner. The waiter chatted with the table next to us, but often ignored us when we signaled or ran away when we had questions.

I did not walk out or call the manager because I was with new clients, but this guy kept up his bad attitude throughout dinner and made us thoroughly uncomfortable. My client wondered allowed if he was a New York waiter. We never did anything offensive except ask them to hold the salt, which they did not, and this guy got bent out of shape.

Chaya used to be a favorite of mine, but I will never go again. Everything was not up to parr. Some things were awful and the service needs to be sent back to New York!

One of my favorites on Main

This is one of my favorite places to eat in the Venice area. It can get loud and packed on weekend nights so be prepared for that. I've never been for happy hour but I have eaten in the dining area a dozen times now.

Staff is friendly, knows the menus, works together (I like that), and they've made honest suggestions when I've asked.

Went recently with a few girlfriends and we wanted to split a couple of entrees. Staff was great in making sure we all had plates, spoons and such. I love when places cater to you rather than say we can't do such and such.

You can park in the area but I've not had much luck getting parking on the street. There is underground parking so be sure to bring your ticket in for at least partial payment. I'll keep going as long as we can get a table.

Great Happy Hour Deals

Every ngiht they run specials, $5 for a whole host of drinks and sushi rolls, spicy tuna tartare, soup. Great ambiance and easy to get a table, sit at bar, or at sushi bar. Service was a little slow from server, but most of the food came from the sushi chefs in front of us- which was quick!

Best Ceviche

So I only went to this restaurant once, but I am crazy about ceviche and get it everywhere that i can and their salmon ceviche was AWESOME. It was citrusy and spicy and tangy - i could eat it for days.

I got the filet mignon too taht was pretty good - I've had better (wasn't the fondest of the black truffle sauce), but it was still enjoyable.

We got paella too and it was quite tasty. It had a great menu. I'd def go back.

Pathetic, overpriced

If food matters to you, skip this place. It's incredible that they can get away with these prices for such mediocrity. It's too salty, too sweet, too heavy.. bad food from the 80's with 21st Century prices. Go to the Nook or Jiraffe -- this place is a big loser.

Great Sushi, Great Atmosphere

I was there on a Friday night with a couple friends and the place was packed. We were able to get reservations only an hour or so before arriving. Our reservation wasn't available right when we got there, so we had to spend 5 minutes or so in the lounge. Not a big deal, but a little annoying.

The service was great and the sushi was amazing. What I liked most about the place was the lively atmosphere. It was quiet enough to have a comfortable conversation with people at your table, but at the same time, you felt like it was the place to be. I would definitely go back again!
