It is very important that you continue to visit your family dentist once every six months, even during your orthodontic treatment, for teeth cleanings and routine dental checkups. If extra dental care is needed, we will be happy to coordinate with your family dentist to make sure that you are receiving the best care possible.

Keep your retainer clean, too, by brushing it gently with a toothbrush and liquid soap. You may also soak it in denture cleaner daily. Do not put your retainer in boiling water or in the dishwasher as it will warp.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Children begin getting their first adult teeth around age 6. Most children then lose all their baby teeth by age 13, and by their mid teen years, the jaw bones begin to harden and stop growing. Orthodontic procedures for adults often take more time and can involve tooth extraction or oral surgery. Receiving early orthodontic treatment as a child can help prevent the need for orthodontics as an adult, decreasing the chance of extractions or surgery in the future.
Jaw Surgery
Depending on the severity of your case and the alignment of your jaw structure, you may or may not need surgery. After a comprehensive diagnosis, Dr. Baker will explain if orthognathic surgery is recommended as part of your treatment.
Maxillofacial Surgery
Surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic surgery, is used in conjunction with orthodontics to correct severe cases that include jaw bone abnormalities, restricted airways, facial imbalances, and malocclusions (bad bites). Oral and maxillofacial surgery is one of the nine recognized dental specialties, and it focuses on treating complex craniofacial cases that involve the mouth, jaw, face, and skull. If you need surgical orthodontics, Dr. Baker will complete a full diagnosis utilizing the 6Elements of Orofacial Harmony and will work with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to ensure that you receive the highest level of care available. Dr. Baker has proudly been the premier orthodontist treating surgical orthodontic cases for the past 10 years in Portland Oregon, Camas & Vancouver Washington.
