Services/Products
OUR HERITAGE Country General Store (CGS) began in 1971 as a surplus store when the San Fernando Valley still contained remnants of The Wild West. There were plenty of ranchers and farmers that needed outfitting with functional clothes for riding horses, hauling oranges, or just lazing around the back porch. Just like America’s country tradition, owner Rick Stanoff developed a simple but true store philosophy: “Give ‘em what they want”. That is, provide the best in western wear and customers will respond. As the store grew and the years passed, CGS was becoming THE place to go in Southern California for quality western wear, a large stocked inventory, and sales people who knew what they were selling and cared about the customer. Southern California was changing too and soon CGS was selling not just to cowboys, but to everyone from everyday workers to motorcycle bikers to men and women going out on the town. Hollywood noticed CGS too, and over the years CGS has built a large following of stylists who can wardrobe just about any show or actor with the best look of the west. Today you’ll find our clothes on many television shows and on the big screen. Country General Store has supplied wardrobe for "No Country For Old Men," "24," "Saving Grace," "W," "Knight Rider," "The Hannah Montana Movie," "Heroes," "CSI," "Land Of The Lost," "Leverage," "NCIS," among others, and most recently, "Dancing With the Stars." Because of CGS’s authentic look and quality clothes we’ve developed not just an American following, but a worldwide one. Customers from all over the world come to CGS to get, as they say, The Real McCoy of western wear. We invite you to come by and visit our Van Nuys, CA store – it is a special experience for everyone – a true treasure of the best collections of western wear in the country. Whatever you’re looking for – boots, a cowboy hat, workwear or evening wear – CGS can make you shine. We look forward to seeing you!

As soon as I walked in I was greeted by Jose, a long time employee and a father of a US Marine. When I asked about a Stetson Catera, he was quick to show me the hat and to explain that reducing the size of the brim (which I wanted) is a service the store offered at no additional charge. Jose was also happy to explain to me the fur content as well as the proper care and handling of such a nice hat. I will be back to purchase my hat from them.

Nice folk, great source for Western gear

It was a slow day when I walked into the store. A young man immediately offered to help me, and showed me the various shirts that I casually inquired about. The owner gave me some info about re-sealing my Austrailan Outback duster and showed me a can of product that would do the job, and told me that they could stretch the hat I had that had always been a little too tight. They were friendly and professional -- I really don't understand what might have happened with the prior poster who complained about customer service, my experience was toatally different.

Great selection - unique store!

If you are in search of a unique western outfit, or pair of cool boots - this is the store to find it. As you walk in, they have a HUGE boot department - with a lot of unique designs and skins. The guys on the floor really know their stuff and helped me find an awesome pair of boots. These boots are cool - perfect to wear to any bar or club in LA... I can tell this is a high-end store because of the brands they carry - Lucchese, Tony Lama, and others that I've read up on. I even topped off my new boots with a belt, and western shirt.

Totally worth a visit, I'll be back!

Overall
horrible customer service

There seems to be a decent selection of merchandise, but the customer service couldn't have been worse. I went in one evening evidently perilously close to closing time, and was practically chased out of the store by two men clad from head to two in western apparel.

When I returned a day or so later to exchange the jeans I purchased for a different size, I was again treated rudely. One of the same men begrudgingly helped me find the size I needed, and then snipped that I should make sure I had the right size this time because I couldn't just keep coming back to return them.

For the record, that was the second time in my life that I had ever been in that store. Needless to say, I won't be giving them any more business.
