Dental Examination

Dr. Greenhill, Dr. Jennison and Dr. Britt consider your child's demeanor, age, and cavity risk when creating individual treament plans.
X-rays
Most children develop cavities between their teeth, and we do not know they are there without x-rays. We recommend taking X-rays once the molars start to touch, for most children this is around age four. Dr. Greenhill, Dr. Jennison and Dr. Britt take x-rays based on your child's cavity risk.

Teeth Cleaning
The American Dental Association recommends that children visit the dentist every six months for regular checkups and routine teeth cleanings to keep their teeth and gums healthy.
Fluoride Treatment
A fluoride varnish treatment in the dentist’s office takes less than thirty seconds. Depending on your child’s oral health or your doctor’s recommendation, your child may be required to have a fluoride treatment every three, six, or 12 months. Dr. Greenhill, Dr. Jennison or Dr. Britt may also prescribe at-home fluoride products such as mouthwash or a prescription toothpaste that has more fluoride in it than a typical toothpaste.
Dental Sealants
Ask Dr. Greenhill, Dr. Jennison or Dr. Britt about dental sealants, a protective coating that can be applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth where decay often starts.
Space Maintainers
If your child’s tooth has come out too soon because of decay or an accident, it is important to maintain the space to prevent future space loss and dental problems when permanent teeth begin to come in. Without the use of a space maintainer, the teeth that surround the open space can shift, impeding the permanent tooth’s eruption. When that happens, the need for orthodontic treatment may become greater.

Fillings
Crowns
If possible, find the tooth. Handle it by the crown, not by the root. You may rinse the tooth with water only. DO NOT clean with soap, scrub or handle the tooth unnecessarily. Inspect the tooth for fractures. If it is sound, try to reinsert it in the socket. Have the patient hold the tooth in place by biting on a gauze or clean cloth. If you cannot reinsert the tooth, transport the tooth in a cup containing the patient’s saliva or milk, NOT water. If the patient is old enough, the tooth may also be carried in the patient’s mouth (beside the cheek). The patient must see a dentist IMMEDIATELY! Time is a critical factor in saving the tooth.
Restorative Dentistry
Treatment with SDF does not eliminate the need for restorative dentistry (fillings, crowns, etc.) to repair function or aesthetics, but it can be effective at preventing the growth of the cavity. Dr. Greenhill, Dr. Jennison and Dr. Britt use SDF as a tool to help defer care until your child is older and more cooperative for treatment, or until the tooth falls out.

Pulpotomy
Dental caries (cavities) and traumatic injury are the main reasons for a tooth to require pulp therapy. Pulp therapy is often referred to as a "nerve treatment", "children's root canal", "pulpectomy" or "pulpotomy". The two common forms of pulp therapy in children's teeth are the pulpotomy and pulpectomy.
Root Canal Treatment
A pulpectomy is required when the entire pulp is involved (into the root canal(s) of the tooth). During this treatment, the diseased pulp tissue is completely removed from both the crown and root. The canals are cleansed, disinfected and, in the case of primary teeth, filled with a resorbable material. Then, a final restoration is placed. A permanent tooth would be filled with a non-resorbing material.

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral Surgery
Most children lose all their baby teeth by age 13, and by the end of their teen years, the jaw bones will harden and stop growing. Orthodontic procedures for adults often take more time and can involve tooth extraction or oral surgery. Receiving early orthodontic treatment as a child can help prevent the need for orthodontics as an adult, leaving little to no chance of extraction or surgery in the future.

Dr. William A. Greenhill received his dental degree in 1989 from the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) and completed a one-year advanced education in general dentistry residency at Langley AFB, VA in 1990. He was on active duty in the United States Air Force until 1999.
