In the past, sinus surgery was much more invasive, often involving incisions in the face or mouth. Now, with them any advancements made in the medical field, there are much less invasive options, including endoscopic sinus surgery. The most common cause for endoscopic sinus surgery is chronic sinusitis.

Our physicians are providers with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Medicare Part B, Alabama Medicaid and Phifer Wire insurance. We are non-network providers with Tricare/Champus and providers with HealthSpring Medicare for Tuscaloosa residents. Ear Infections
Middle ear infections are common in children ages six months to two years old. Some children are more prone to middle ear infections due to environmental or lifestyle factors, like exposure to secondhand smoke or attending childcare. Although ear infections are often easy to treat, children who experience recurrent infections may be at risk for hearing loss or speech problems.
Emergency Care
Epiglottitis is a condition where the epiglottis swells, causing a hoarse voice. There are many factors that can cause the epiglottis to swell, including infections, injury to the throat, and burns from hot liquids. This condition can be dangerous since it can inhibit the ability for air to flow into the lungs. This condition is considered a medical emergency and should be treated immediately. If you believe you may be experiencing symptoms of epiglottitis, contact your doctor ASAP, or visit an emergency room.
Immunizations
In cases where the skin has been punctured on the nose, one of our physicians will carefully clean and close the wound using self-adhesive strips or sutures. It is also advised that the patient receive an injection to prevent tetanus if their vaccination of 10 years is not up to date. In the case of bony fractures, severe swelling may occur. It usually takes about a week before swelling has resolved enough for the bones to be examined.

Endoscopy
The type of treatment needed will be dependent upon symptoms and the cause of the swallowing disorder. It may be recommended that a patient undergo specific swallowing exercises to improve muscle movement, use specific strategies to help swallow more efficiently, or stick to food or liquid textures that are easier to swallow. In some cases, it may be required to undergo an endoscopy procedure, in which a long, thin scope can be used to locate and remove any object that is blocking the esophagus.

Thyroid
They thyroid gland is located at the base of the neck and is shaped like a butterfly. It produces thyroid hormone, which helps to control our bodies’ metabolism. Thyroid disease, whether in the form of hyperthyroidism, nodules, or cancer, is very common.
Thyroid Cancer
Thyroid cancer occurs when cancer cells form in the tissues of the thyroid gland. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located near the base of the throat. A healthy thyroid usually cannot be felt through the skin.

Ultrasound
There is an array of tests that examine the thyroid to diagnose cancer. Tests or procedures that may be used to diagnose thyroid cancer may include a physical exam, laryngoscopy, blood hormone studies, blood chemistry studies, ultrasound or CT scan, or surgical biopsy.
MRI
Neck masses that are associated with cancer are often caused by the spread of cancer in another location, such as the throat, tonsils, lungs etc. The only exception is lymphoma, which can occur anywhere. The first step is to locate the cancer, which may include an endoscopy, and MRI/CT, bloodwork etc. A biopsy will be required for diagnosis.

Computed Tomography
A CT scan is a specialized kind of x-ray that allows the doctor to completely view the sinuses. This can help the doctor to diagnose issues that may not be noticeable from the outside of the nose or face. CT scans can help to show if sinus cavities are filled with mucus or are swollen or inflamed, which can lead to sinus issues.
Chemotherapy
Depending on the type of thyroid cancer, the stage of the cancer, the age of the patient, and the patient’s general health, treatment will vary. Possible treatment options may include surgery, radioactive iodine treatment, thyroid hormone therapy, chemotherapy, or targeted therapy.

Dr. Loftin is a board-certified otolaryngologist with special interests in pediatric ear, nose, and throat problems, allergy and nasal, sinus, and ear disorders. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama (Summa Cum Laude) and his medical degree from the University of Alabama Hospitals-UAB. He completed his residency in Otolaryngology -Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Alabama Hospital-UAB, and did an additional year of training in ear surgery at the Birmingham Ear Institute.

Dr. Rosenstiel is a board-certified otolaryngologist with special interests in sinus surgery, sleep surgery, and pediatric ear, nose, and throat disorders. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and his medical degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at the University of Alabama Health System.
