Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a group of diseases of the optic nerve involving loss of retinal ganglion cells. Glaucoma affects one in two hundred people aged fifty and younger, and one in ten over the age of eighty. It is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide.
Ophthalmology
Dr. Contreras served as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Dameron Hospital in Stockton (2001-2011). He has also served as Head of Ophthalmology at the community-oriented Su Salud health and education fair in Stockton. Su Salud was recognized by former President George H. Bush as among the one thousand “Points of Light” – a premier volunteer organization across the country.
Macular Degeneration
During your routine eye exam, your doctor will test your visual acuity and test for diseases and conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, color blindness, and diabetic retinopathy.

Cataracts
In a normal eye, the lens is clear. In an eye that has a cataract, the lens has become cloudy or tinted. It is like a window that has become fogged with steam. The development of a cataract is usually age related. However, there are other reasons cataracts develop. For instance, long term medication use, medical problems such as diabetes, an injury to the eye, or long term unprotected exposure to the sun. These can all preclude cataract development.
Cataract Surgery
The most common type of adult onset ptosis is due to a weakening of the attachment between the levator muscle (the muscle that raises the upper lid) and the eyelid. This may occur as a result of the aging process, after cataract surgery or contact lens wear, or from an injury.
Eye Exam
How often you schedule your eye exam depends on a number of factors. Those with good eye health will be asked to come back every two years, while those who have had previous conditions, or existing conditions, will be asked to return every year. Diabetic patients will also be asked to return yearly, as diabetic retinopathy is a possibility. Frequency of visits will also be determined by age, family history and medications taken.

Dr. Lee was raised in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he attended University of Sao Paulo School of Medicine. He served his Ophthalmology residency at Penn State University and Internal Medicine residency at Wright State University. He joined Dr. Janzen in 1992 to form Turlock Eye Physicians Medical Group.

Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is an outpatient procedure involving tightening of the muscle that lifts the eyelid. The surgical approach taken depends on specific findings and testing performed during the preoperative evaluation.
Blepharoplasty
Ptosis a condition in which the upper eyelid(s) droops. The eyelid may droop only slightly or it may droop enough to partially or completely cover the pupil, restricting or obscuring the field of vision. Ptosis should not be confused with extra skin, fat or muscle to the eyelid, which are typically addressed with blepharoplasty surgery. When Ptosis can be shown to reduce vision (peripheral vision), its correction is covered by most insurance plans. If the degree of Ptosis is not as severe (does not affect vision), it is considered elective surgery and can be corrected as a cosmetic procedure.
