General Info

Rensselaer Auto Plaza is a family-owned and operated business, founded in 1977 by David James.  In June 1984, a new facility was built at our current location of 770 Hoosick Street in Troy.  In 2001, renovations to update to Honda’s new brand image began, providing guests with a state-of-the-art dealership and support facility, including a drive-thru service area for easy drop-off and pick-up of vehicles. 


In 1988, David’s son, Andrew J. James, joined the company.  Six years later, Andrew was named Vice President and General Manager and in 2008, he was named President of Rensselaer Honda.  In 2010, Simply Better Auto Center, a pre-owned car dealership, was opened.  The facility at 805 Hoosick Rd. greatly increased our need for service space along with the opportunity to sell pre-owned cars from a separate location.


Today, Andrew carries out his father’s vision by continuing the tradition of “Simply Better” customer-friendly sales of new and pre-owned vehicles.  Andrew’s goal of treating every visitor to our dealership as an honored guest and his pledge to put the customer’s needs first has given Rensselaer Auto Plaza the outstanding reputation and loyal customer base in the Capital District that it has today.

I purchased a 2013 Acura MDX a little over a week ago (43K miles). I had been doing research for a couple of months...already test drove similar vehicles, knew exactly what I was looking for. I saw the vehicle I wanted online at Rensselaer Honda. I immediately contacted the online sales person, exchanged a few emails, and text messages, went in that Saturday morning for a test drive. I was a very easy sell to say the least! Our salesman was fairly new...but nice! It was a cold morning...and the test drive route is very short, on all back roads (nothing over 45MPH). We had the heater fan blowing full blast, so couldn't hear any abnormal noises coming from the vehicle. I made the purchase and picked the vehicle up later that day. As I drove it for 2.5 days I noticed multiple things that sounded/felt weird. A vibration in the steering column when turning, an issue with the RPM's between 1-2K, a dragging noise from the brakes (although I was told the brakes were brand new), also a few chips in the paint, which I didn't notice until later that evening (once the frost was off the vehicle). I made an appointment brought the vehicle in...I was given a rental car (Only good thing that came from this experience). They had my car for 2 days...trying to get a hold of them, was terrible, emailed the service adviser Blake, and he never returned my emails. He called me ONCE, one time to tell me the status of the vehicle....which was, NOTHING WAS WRONG!!! Although I've done tons of research, and these vehicles are infamous for torque converter and transmission issues....they refused to give me a print out of the vehicles data showing that the TC was operating properly. They told me the vibration in the steering column was "operating as designed"....and they never even addressed the fact that the vehicle had damage to the front driver bumper. I spoke with 3 different Honda AND Acura dealers.....they say that these issues do not sound "normal"! The customer service I received was TERRIBLE, awful....I wouldn't take my scooter to this placed to be fixed! Not to mention, my salesman, Ryan....I thought was so nice, riiiiight! I would text him asking questions and letting him know of the issues....I got one line responses....and when I told him how unhappy I was he NEVER RESPONDED!!!! Haven't heard from him since! I emailed the GM, and a sales manager letting them know of my experience....and still almost a week later I have not heard a peep from anyone!!!! I'm not asking for much....just acknowledge the terrible experience I had, that's all! So I am doing as any unhappy customer is...I'm telling EVERYONE I can about the awful experience with this dealership. DO NOT BUY A VEHICLE FROM THIS PLACE....and especially DO NOT GO THERE FOR VEHICLE SERVICE!

Buyer beware!

I would not recommend doing business with this dealership. I purchased a brand new vehicle from them. At less than 1k I had issues with the vehicle which they refused to look at and repair. I had to go elsewhere for the issues to be taken care of. When you buy a new car with them their main selling point is 3 free oil changes, 2 tire rotations and 3 state inspections. They are no refusing to honor this for me in the future for no specific reason. I did contact Honda corporate when they would not look at or address the concerns with my vehicle. The dealership is highly unprofessional and doesn't stand behind the vehicles they sell. I wanted numerous times to talk to upper management about the way the manager the salesman was treating me and I was denied. I even googled the president of the dealership myself and emailed him directly and he never responded to any of my emails. I have never had such an awful car buying experience in my life. I would not recommend purchasing from them at all.

I had scheduled an annual inspection. Shannon called we scheduled a meeting to discus trading in the 2012

Honda Civic. During the inspection, we met, took a test drive, and went over details of possibly,trading in the 2012 for a 2014. By the time my 2012 was ready, I had finished all the paper

work, and had scheduled,day and time for brining

in the 2012, and driving away in the 2014.

I was looking for a 2006 CRV with heated seats in 2008. ( I hate the new design in 2007 yuck!) I took to the internet to search for my car and it directed me to your business . You were the closest dealer that had 3 of the CRV s that I wanted. I did most if my negotiations on line , but test drove before I purchased . We met in Utica for the transfer . I love my CRV and will keep driving it until you change the design again to something more desirable . Please go back to a boxy design .
