Reliable, clean, hardworking, fair painter. I enjoyed seeing this young man take pride in how beautiful he made my home look. I have a modest 1700 square foot home A young looking man came to my home (after finding his number on yellow pages.com) to give me an estimate that was clearly written and detailed in every single need my home required. We walked around the home and he quietly wrote down notes as he listened to what I wanted, and as it turns out everything that it required. After reading the proposal I realized I was getting a great deal. Ray washed my home early the first day. We spent the afternoon going over the colors and Ray ordered the paint and picked up all the materials to begin the preparations of my home. On Sunday my home was caulked, sealed, and ready for paint. Yesterday, at 9:00 am sharp Ray showed up to cover my windows with plastic and up went the primer. Shortly after up went my top color. Ray was right tinting the primer to match the paint really gave the topcoatings a custom look. Well with my home painted Ray took lunch at three and returned at four to begin trimming out my home. By 5;30 p.m my home was complete. Ray worked this whole weekend that was my only free one as I am a full time teacher and part time barber. I have one more appointment with Ray to discuss any imperfections but as of this morning my home looks beautiful. Like a freshly built home. It's 15 yrs old!!!!! Thank you Mr. Bernal for keeping your word and painting my home like I wanted.

10. Dan Paints
Dan Paints was referred by a friend. From start to finish the company was very neat and clean. Clean up every day, on time and on budget. I will use this company again in the future. Dan (the owner) is on the job daily and supervises the process. He knows what he's doing and does it very we…
I met Mr. Gomez through my daughter-in-law, in May of 2015, after relocating back to San Antonio from MN to spend some time with my family. Their home needed lots of TLC including everything from flooring, painting, plumbing and just about everything in between. Usually, these guys come out…
Sergio Tubilla performs quality work on pretty much anything you need done. I originally had him come over for a free estimate on some water damage repairs that were extensive. He repaired the damages for a much lower cost then previous companies estimates. Before he left he told me if I needed anything fixed or installed to let him know so I asked him if he installed french doors. He said yes and went to Lowes, picked up the one I selected and installed it. There was some extra work that needed to be done so the doors would fit and he didn't charge extra. On his way out I inquired about ceiling fan installation and he did that for me too. His great workmanship is evident because he treats every project as if he was performing the task on his own house. I pointed out a spot that I wanted fixed and I told him I didn't mean to be picky, his reply was, "No you need to tell me what you don't like, it needs to be done right." He loves his work and you can see that through the finished product. He has over 14 years of experience and he even has a Masters degree which I found to be quite impressive. He goes beyond what is expected so eveything looks great. He work is quality and I will definitely be using him again. I highly recommend him to anyone that is looking for an honest contractor.
We were referred to Dennis and his company by some good friends who are even more particular than we are. Whenever they are happy with a company then we know they have passed the ultimate test and we can count on that company to do a 1st class job. They are very professional, were patient with our changes (thanks Ozzie), very through, and they're not satisfied until you're satisfied. In the past we've had contractors who seemed to think they knew better than we what we wanted, and were more interested in getting paid than ultimately doing a good job. But with Constructors Division 9 they listened, gave good advice and we ended up with a great job for which we were very satisfied and happy. In other words they go beyond what is expected. For anyone getting ready to paint, it would be in your best interest to give Dennis a call. That way you're not giving him a call to redo a job when someone else's job only lasts two years in our hot Texas sun.
I hired this company to paint one room. They were so impressive I had them paint the whole house, inside and outside. They stained brick on my fireplace and on the outside of my house. Dennis' background is in commerical construction, in which he was a project engineer for a major constructiony company in San Antonio. He began this company in painting, but with his background he branched out in commerical and residential renovation. This was important because my house needed both painting and renovation. He is also an artist. I let him choose all the colors and he did not let me down. Dennis' crew was reliable, they stayed with the job, were always there when they said they would be. were neat and clean--you would never guess workers were at my house. The work was outstanding (just ask the neighbors). His price may be a bit high but his work is thorough and the quality is worth every penny. He does not sacrifice on work or materials.
Daniel (the owner) was involved during the whole job of painting the exterior of my home. He was very concientious to detail and he and Hugo did a great job. Like another poster said, they were there right on time every day. They were even there on Saturday to get the job finished. They were very professional, and were always very courteous in cleaning up the "site" at the end of every day. Attention to detil was very evident in that they painted BEHIND my gutter downspouts, painted some other areas that were not even discussed during the quote phase (an extra door, my garage door, and an extra coat of paint on my front door), and they made sure to put things (my solar screens) back to where they were before they started the job. Dan and Hugo were very pleasant to work with, and I knew from the start that I could trust Dan to do a great job. Highly recommended... Josh
Had extensive dry wall/baseboard repair with follow up painting as well as regrouting/caulking of a shower stall done. Dennis Chavez and his staff were outstanding to work with from the get go, even when an unexpected problem arose. They were punctual, did the job they said they would, stayed on budget, and were genuinely nice people to work with. They may not be the cheapest quote that you will find but the job will be done correctly the first time, and in a timely fashion. Dennis is outstanding about keeping you up to date on the progress of the project, explaining what they are doing, and ensuring that the customer is satisfied. A good friend recommended these guys to my wife and I and we would enthusiastically recommend them to anyone.
I'm very pleased with Torres Painting. I called one day asking for a quote and Jorge Torres was at my house the very next day. He asked all the pertinent questions and offered to do the work at a fair price. He did not ask for a deposit, even though I asked him to provide the paint. They came as scheduled (it was him and another worker). They got the sheet rock repaired and the walls, ceiling and trim of my bedroom painted all in the same day. They cleaned up after themselves and behaved very professionally. I will suggest that if you hire them, be sure to remove all the switch and outlet plates yourself, as they did not take them off the walls but merely painted around them.
Mr. Estrada (Ruben) did an absolutely outstanding job with painting the exterior of my house. He helped me pick out the best quality paint, listened well to my detailed instructions then went to work to produce an amazing finish. My house has a stucco exterior and after sealing some minor exterior cracks in the stucco and priming those areas, he then applying a new coat of paint over the repairs and over my entire stucco, facia and window trim areas including my foundation. I couldn't be happier with the work and he was very reasonably priced. I'll call Ruben next time I need a painter either inside or outside of my home.
I tried another company before I tried First Choice, and they ended up, staining my floors and they never cleaned after themselves, so I fired them after 4 days of work. I was recommended to First Choice from a friend of mine. This company painted my house inside and out, and also stained my backdoor deck. I am very pleased with their work. They would show up on time, they gave me a very affordable price, and they were very neat and clean. I was also suprised and how well, it all turned out! My house looks fantastic! Thanks First Choice!!!
Ruben was highly recommended to us by one of our neighbors and he definitely exceeded our expectations. If you are in need of a painter I would not hesitate to contact Ruben. He is dependable, always on time and without a doubt the neatest contractor we have ever used. Every day after he leaves you would never know that he had been in your house. I am very particular when recommending someone and you would not be disappointed if you need any type of painting or repairs for your home. Ginny K
Painting can be a significant undertaking, whether you're painting just one room or an entire home. While some people like to take on this project themselves, many choose to hire professionals to ensure the task is completed correctly.
Types of Interior Paint
Matte paint doesn't have a shiny quality when it dries, which many homeowners prefer for their interior walls. This is the most popular style of paint for homes. It covers up irregularities in the wall well but is also easily blemished.
Matte Enamel Paint
Matte enamel paint has all the positive qualities of matte paint but will last longer and isn't scuffed as easily.
Gloss paint will dry with a shine to it and is the second-most popular choice for interior wall paint. The shiny quality highlights imperfections in a surface, so people tend to stay away from it when painting wood.
Semi-gloss is also shiny but less so than gloss paint. It's more commonly used on trim than on walls.
Satin falls somewhere between gloss and matte in terms of shininess. It will highlight imperfections well, like gloss, but is easy to clean.
Eggshell is also between gloss and matte on the shininess scale, but it won't highlight imperfections quite as much as satin, semi-gloss, or gloss.
Types of Exterior Paint
Exterior paints have similar choices for finishes as interior paints, but the pros and cons can be different for outdoor use.
Though gloss paint will make imperfections easily seen, it will also hold up to the elements the best. This paint is best suited for areas of a home or building that are frequently used, like door frames.
Semi-gloss paint is similarly long-lasting but isn't as shiny as gloss.
Satin paint is commonly used for siding but will display irregularities underneath if the siding isn't in good shape.
Flat paint is the best choice if painting over siding that has many dents, scrapes, or other imperfections.
If you're repainting a home that has been previously painted with oil-based paint, your best bet is to stick with this option. Water-based paint layered over old oil-based paint will peel easily.
Water-based paint, or latex paint, dries quickly and cleans up easily, making it the preferred paint for a home's exterior. It will also expand when warm and contract when cool, which means it will hold up in all types of weather.
Hiring a Painter
When embarking on a project as big as painting your home, it's important to know ahead of time what kind of quality you can expect from the painters you hire. Don't settle for the first one you find or the cheapest option. Instead, do your homework to be sure that you hire a trustworthy professional who knows how to paint a house well.
The first thing you'll do when hiring a painter is request quotes from three or four in your area. If you reach out to too many, you'll wind up wasting time narrowing down your list; too few and you may not end up with the best quality or right price.
The typical price range for an interior paint job is between $400 and $4,120, with the average falling around $1,670, depending on the scope of the project and paint requests. It will typically cost around $380 to $790 to paint a typical 10-by-12 foot room.
The cost to paint a home's exterior is a little higher: between $730 and $5,600, with an average of $2,624. The typical home of between 500 and 1,500 square feet will generally cost between $1,000 and $3,000, but this will change depending on the number of stories and home location.
If a quote seems high, ask the contractor what is increasing the price point. Perhaps it's something that can be negotiated, or maybe this business is just overpricing their services. On the other hand, be skeptical of any price points that seem unfathomably low. There could be a reason their prices are below the industry norm - perhaps their quality standards are uncommonly low, too.
Once you have quotes, conduct an over-the-phone interview with your prospects. Some important questions to ask your painter include:
1. Do you have insurance?
It's never a good idea to hire a contractor whose business isn't properly insured. Ask both about comprehensive business liability insurance and workers' compensation, and don't be hesitant to ask for proof. If you are unsure of the validity of the insurance, you can also call the insurance company to double-check that it is an active policy.
2. Do you have a warranty?
Not offering a warranty is a red flag, and you may want to be cautious about hiring a company that doesn't provide one. If they have a warranty, ask how long it lasts, and what it covers. Additionally, you'll want to get the warranty in writing should you need to refer to it later.
3. Who, specifically, will be in my house, and can I trust them?
You always have a right to know who will be entering your home. If the person you are speaking with says he or she will not be personally supervising the project, ask who will be, what their role is, and how long they've been with the company.
Also, don't be afraid to ask if the painters are trustworthy people. Unfortunately, there are plenty of cases where a painter has stolen items from a home or caused damage to the house or injury to the homeowner. Subcontractors may not be as skilled as employees, and the contractor you're hiring may not have much experience working with them, making them more of a risk. Additionally, ask if the painters are employees or subcontractors, and what the screening or hiring process is like. If the company conducts background checks, that's a good sign.
4. What kind of training do your employees receive?
If the contractor makes a point to train new hires on safety techniques as well as quality standards on the job, you're probably in good hands.
5. What kind of paint will you use?
The quality of the paint will affect how good the walls look when the project is completed. If your contractor says they plan on using a paint you don't like, feel free to request an alternative.
6. How long have you been in business, and do you have references?
A well-established company will have more experience and likely more references for you to reach out to than a new company that's just getting off the ground. Be sure to ask for references so you can speak to former customers about their experience working with the painter. When speaking to these people, ask about:
- Whether they had issues with the crew
- If the painters were messy or neat
- How the paint has held up since the project was completed
7. How much wall prep is included in the price?
For a long-lasting paint job, a clean wall is crucial. Ask how they plan to clean your walls, if at all, before getting started. A high-quality company will thoroughly prepare a wall so that the paint will lay smoothly and last a long time.
8. Are you active in the community and are you involved in any trade organizations?
Community involvement shows the company:
- Is established and well-known
- Cares about its customers
- Is confident in their work
Additionally, being active in trade organizations indicates it is likely up to date on the latest industry best practices and that the company is dedicated to its trade. Also, a Better Bureau Business membership demonstrates the company is stable, confident, and willing to let potential customers check them out before hiring them.
Trade Organizations for Painters
If the company you hire is involved in a trade organization, it shows they take pride in their work, and are dedicated to providing quality service. Some top trade organizations painters might be a part of include:
Painting and Decorating Contractors of America
PDCA connects painters and home decorators through local chapters and councils. The organization also provides webinars, educational videos, and podcasts so members can stay up to date on the latest best practices and news.
American Coatings Association
The ACA doesn't focus on best practices so much as it does on best products. The nonprofit is dedicated to research and development of high-quality paint products as well as sustainability issues.
Finishing Contractors Association
The FCA has members that are painters as well as professionals who focus on flooring, drywall, and other elements to home construction and renovation.
Better Business Bureau
The BBB isn't a painter-specific group but rather an organization that is dedicated to ensuring that consumers can access information about anyone they do business with. The BBB also rates companies based on a Standards of Trust scale, which goes from A+ to F. A company doesn't have to be a member to get a grade, and it's a good idea to check to see how your contractor is scored as well as its membership status.
