More than usual I'm here for my birthday. Been coming for years. Always a fun experience and always good food. Just a good time. Order the shrimp and filet
One of our favorites. I love the crunchy swirling shrimp and the Ichiban roll with the bits of garlic. The waitstaff is always pleasant, and happy hour is a good deal. I also love the buy 2 get 1 roll free deal they have until 3pm.
This hidden gem is located in Castle Hills, which happens to be close to our office, so we decided to give it a try. We were so surprised - inside was very zen like and calming and the staff greeted us right away. Normal lunch prices for extraordinary food! Loved the orange miso seabass and c…
I have been frequenting this restuarant for many years. Yes it is an old place but the quality of food is phenomenal. It is way better than Benihana. When ordering a steak at a place with Hibachi you always need to order one under what you want because of the type of grill. So for the person who…

PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE ALL THE OTHERS:I took my fiancé to sumo for her birthday... I have been to MANY hibachi restaurants including Benihana etc. this is excellent food with a San Antonio feel to it. If you don't want to spend $20 for the meal, don't come. But mind you, all other Hibachi restaurants I've been to are much more $$ compared to sumo but they lack the taste that sumo provided. If you've never been to Hibachi before then I could see how you might not like sumo (overpriced blah blah) anyone who orders steamed rice at hibachi is a joke. You CLEARLY GET FRIED RICE SO YOU CAN SEE IT COOKED IN FRONT OF YOU! DUH! If not , then OF COURSE it will come at a different time than the fried. OY.Overall, about $10 less per plate than Benihana but much better flavor. Not as clean as Benihana etc but hey, this is San Antonio, is there anything that's actually considered "clean?"Only other comment is wish there was a large section of sake, maybe adding warm sake to menu would be nice but here again, this is SAN AN-freakin-TONIO.Go to sumo under these pretenses and you'll enjoy. Make a reservation online
We had the best Hibachi experience and delicious meal at Sumo! I just don't understand any previous less than stellar reviews. First, make a reservation. The entire meal takes the better part of an hour. If the parking lot is even half full & you just walk in, you're just going to be watching everyone eat and have fun without you. Second, try to go on a weekday night, and heaven forbid, not a holiday (Valentines, Mothers Day...) as with any restaurant IMHO. We went on a Thursday night for my daughter's Sweet 16th Birthday. Third, the chef matters. We got incredibly lucky with John. If you can ask for him, you are guaranteed an articulate, witty, entertaining, talented Hibachi chef. Oh my, can this guy cook! After the wonderful soup and a salad, John entertained us with awesome knife, fire and egg twirling tricks and then started our meal with the most delicious chicken fried rice I have ever had. I could have stopped right there, it was that good. I had the Sake Teriyaki Chicken, my husband the steak and shrimp combo, my daughter and older son, the steak, and my daughter's friend, the Hibachi Chicken. Everything was seared/grilled and seasoned to perfection. My nine year old had the fried chicken fingers and hibachi grilled corn ~ he loved learning to use the chopsticks and the different dipping sauces that came with our meals. The only thing I didn't like was the Mai Tai and that was completely subjective ~ super strong and not sweet enough for my taste, but someone else might love it.
We haven't been here in a long time due to the poor quality of food but decided to try it again. Our chef was John and he was great. The food was awesome
Cynthia did an amazing job !!! She was our cook today. She was entertaining, funny, welcoming and so lovable. On top of everything, she makes a mean steak !!! The food was absolutely delicious !!! It was my first time eating here and she made my experience one to remember ! I'll definitely be coming back to eat from her ! Celsa was my server and she continuously made sure my drink was full and made sure we were satisfied ! Great job !
Let me start off by saying wow! I had an amazing experience tonight! Tommy was a phenomenal hibachi cook and kept us and the whole table laughing! Extremely happy with our experience there. We were celebrating my boyfriends 26th birthday and Tommy made my boyfriend feel so welcomed and went above and beyond for us! We have been there a few other times and we like it so we keep coming back. But tonight for a slow Monday they made us just feel so welcomed and special! The whole table couldn't stop laughing. If I could give them more stars I would. I recommend asking for Tommy to be your cook when you go! You won't regret it! Thank you Sumo for making my boyfriends birthday so special! We will be back!
Had a great night here. Food was delicious, the draft beer was refreshing, and the cook was awesome. Request Vader as your chef because not only does he cook great but he will do anything to leave you entertained
Love it food was great. Very entertaining and service was wonderful .
chef's are great...really nice. The food is Amazing! I suggest the Sake Terriyaki chicken. I hope to be coming back here soon!
One of our favorite date night places. We've easily been 10+ times so I'm surprised to see some of the 1-3 star reviews. We always only eat the hibachi and know the 18% grat is added. If you're dining out, that's a fair grat & your choice to add or not add additional. Just went yesterday and we'll be back. Also- FYI- groupons all have fine print. Theirs is no special events or holiday and make a reservation ahead of time.
