When a car is damaged by an accident or weather, what can be repaired and what must be replaced? Or is it time to buy a new car?
No matter whether an accident involved a freshly licensed teen or an experienced driver, knowing what to do (or not do) is essential to bouncing back.
All it takes is a little preparation to get your car winter-ready and to keep from getting into an icy situation.
Only place I'd take a car or truck for anything non-warranty. Found them after Bill Currie tried to burn us twice and they have been great .... from Chevy trucks, to Ford Escapes and Toyota Ravs they've handled them all... been going there for over 5 years.... the work is warranted, reasonably priced, and you wont get ripped off. Dan is straight up and that can be hard to find these days ... if you ever want to test the "integrity" of a mechanic, send in your daughter with a charge card and a "known" issue. At Gillett's, they will find and fix that problem, and that problem only.... There are a lot of places that will "find" all kinds of things "wrong", that are non-existent. Sent my daughter to Bill Currie with a small power steering leak ... they wanted to put in a new power steering pump for around $700 ... the thing is, the only thing wrong was that the spring clip holding the hose from the reservoir had cracked the hose at the connection. The second time she had to take it in was for a safety recall on the seat belts or something .... she called saying they found that the front brake pads were metal to metal with the rotors and the rear brake pads and drums needed replacing immediately as well. I had done both front and back less than nine months prior so I told her to go home where I pulled a front an rear wheel, took photo's of what Bill Curries "service writer" called "metal to metal" and drove back to the dealership. I went straight to the "sharp dressed" service manager, showed him the copy of the service order/recommendations from my daughter, and then the pictures I had just taken. He backpedaled like nobody's business and I left after asking him to please, next time you want to steal from me ... come to my house to do it so I can legally respond accordingly. No one at Gillett Auto wears a tie, but they're honest and reliable. It seems like from Factory service centers to court houses to capitol hill, the biggest thieves and liars all wear ties ....
I highly recommend Transmatics Transmissions. I haven't been treated this well by a mechanic in over 10 years!!!I had just gotten off I-75 for a business meeting, thankfully an hour early, when my car started making a weird noise. While I was driving I was turning everything on and off to see what the cause was, but couldn't figure it out. I got to my destination and immediately popped the hood and called my brother. Long story short he figured it was most likely something related to the transmission. So I looked up Transmission Mechanic on Google Maps and Transmatics Transmissions was right around the corner. I drove my car over and spoke to Leon immediately after arriving. He drove the car around the lot and told me he would find the problem. He then offered to DRIVE ME back to my meeting! I don't know of any mechanic anywhere that would do that, even if it were around the corner! I got a call later from Leon stating that they wouldn't be able to fix it today because the part wouldn't come in on time. After I told him I didn't want stay unless absolutely necessary he offer another solution that wouldn't risk destroying my car on the ride home so that I could have it fixed later. I opted for Plan B, then Leon came and PICKED ME UP from my meeting!Other than not having AC for the ride home, the consequence of Plan B-thoroughly explained beforehand, I felt like a princess. And they only charged my $60 for taking apart my engine and telling me exactly what my problem was. Now my brother can fix it this weekend! Thank you Transmatics!
I highly recommend this Auto Repair Shop... I have been using them the last 20 years and all I can say about them is they are extremely good at what the do.They are very knowledgeable, honest, great service, and the best is their prices are very reasonable compare to other repair shops. The owner's name is Jesse... Tell them Nixon recommended them and I promise you... you'll be happy you did. There are many auto repair shops but ALTERNATIVE AUTO CARE they will fix what is needed to be fixed - unlike other shops may fix what is wrong with your car but they often will tell you additional repairs is needed so they can make more money off from you... I'm not just saying it because it has happened to me more times that I can count.Take your vehicle to them you will be happy you did driving away knowing they fix what was wrong without over charging you. I have been using them with all of the cars I have owned the last 20+ years,,, I should know and you will be grateful you did. No need for thanks. They have been great with me and the only reason I'm taking the time to write this review! Nixon
I got into a car accident and did not know what to do. I went to two other shops that we're going to charge me over $1,800 to fix the car, I found Tito online on Facebook and he said he can help me no matter what, as being a single female going to any mechanic I'm very skeptical because a lot of shops take advantage of the fact that I'm a female. I had the car towed to his shop and he told me that he can do it for $1,000 .it's hard to believe because two other shops wanted to charge me so much more. he told me he would have the car fixed in a week and called me during the week to let me know the status of the vehicle. Exactly one week later one of his workers came and pick me up he brought me to the car and it looked absolutely amazing. I cannot believe that he fix the car, I am very grateful for Tito and the Gang for fixing the only thing I have left of my grandmother who recently passed away. If you want to have your car fixed perfect and an update as the progress progresses then bring your car to Tito tell him Alicia sent you and he will take good care of you..god bless
Los mechanicos son muy buenos, honestos, el trabajo es barato y saben todo de los carros. I take my 2000 Honda to Jose, my bf takes his Nissan n his family takes their 1990's Toyota and new Honda. He's very knowledgeable and fair prices compared to most other rip-off garages in FL. There's 1 guy that speaks perfect English n the cashier speaks enough to check u out but other than that everybody speaks spanish so it helps if u at least can Spanglish ur way thru it. There's been 1 issue with a new mechanic that broke something aesthetic on my car but Jose fixed it no charge n the guy was fired next time I came. I like taking my car here, I feel they're very good mechanics and charge fair prices and always tell me the truth about needed repairs or if I can wait to do something. They can't do body work or alignments here but they'll refer u to somewhere honest and cheap for anything u need that they don't do. Jose will be my mechanic as long as he's in Tampa I trust him and his employees.
I am new to the area and had yet to find a mechanic that would be honest, reliable and trustworthy. When I got to the shop on Saturday 3/26 I got a good feeling due to the high quality shop that Leon, the owner, keeps. Leon greeted me and spoke with me about the problems my car was having. He was very straightforward about what I would need, the cost of it all, and his opinions. I spoke with a mechanic friend of mine who had assumed the labor/parts would cost far more than what Leon charged me. If you are looking for a mechanic that will not steal your money, and will get the job done, Leon is your man! Many mechanics will give you a handwritten slip of what you had done for the day, but Leon gave me a receipt with a professional heading for his shop, all of the work done and the prices. When you are looking for someone who will take care of your car, you want someone reliable and professional. He runs a good shop and I am happy to say I have found my new mechanic.
Just a few days ago my transmission started slipping a bit. Then it started making some very nasty growling noises. Got into a parking lot and every gear acted like neutral; my transmission was TOAST! Looked into a lot of different shops and was really starting to question if I should even keep my van or just get a new one because of the high costs everywhere I called for rebuilt transmissions.I heard about Transmatic Transmissions from a trusted mechanic. When I called, a tech answered the phone. He was very knowledgeable and answered all of my questions to my satisfaction. When he learned that I drove a van he immediately asked if it was a work van. I said yes and he quickly figured out what it would take to get it done as fast as possible so that I can keep working. I had my van towed there and 1.5 days later they called me letting me know I was good to go! Very good turnaround time! My transmission repair was HALF the cost of most other places I called!
Integrity Auto Repair is the BEST auto repair shop in Tampa. Mike the owner, is one of the most friendly, honest and professional mechanics I have ever met. His rates are extremely reasonable and affordable. Although the majority of a mechanic's time is spent working on automobiles, communicating with customers about a car's problems, repair schedule and costs are also important. Being able to explain mechanical terminology so that a layperson can understand is a valuable skill for a mechanic and can go a long way toward gaining a customer's trust and repeat business. Mike does all these things and more. Once you bring your car to Integrity for repair, you will never need or want to go anywhere else.Faye Elizabeth
My fiancee and I have employed the services of Southern Comfort Auto and are invariably impressed with the speed and quality of their work, and fully satisfied with their reasonable pricing. Travis is a pleasure to work with, and is an exemplary model for their business approach that "customer comfort is their concern." I highly recommend that anyone in need of auto repair skip the dealership rip-off shops and "name brand" sites whose approach to their work and their customers is one of indifference, and take your vehicle instead to Southern Comfort Auto. Get value for your money and peace-of-mind for your vehicle in one place - try Southern Comfort, you won't regret it.
I have used Tony Meehan's Auto Repair for nearly 20 years.. He is the most honest mechanic I have ever used. He does not fix what does not need fixing. He has reasonable prices and is quick in getting the car back on the road. He diagnoses the problem and advises you of options before he begins repairs.. I recently had an engine cooling problem and had to stop immediately at a national franchise type mechanic.. they wanted to replace the entire cooling system for about $1200.. I towed it over 30 miles back to Tony who was able to diagnose a much lesser problem to the tune of $387.. As long as Tony is in business I will be his customer...
There are more than 700,000 auto service technicians and mechanics in the U.S. Finding the right one to repair a dent in your car door or fix an engine that won't start can be overwhelming, especially when it's an emergency. Review a few important facts about auto repair professionals and what you can do to get the best possible mechanic working on your vehicle's issues for a fair price.
Looking For Reliability
Unlike home repair services that evaluate a property, meet with homeowners and have time to prepare before their physical work begins, auto repair businesses are often asked to make fixes on the spot. If you come into a garage with a tire issue, the expectation is the mechanic will know how to correct that problem quickly.
That is why reliability is so vital when searching for a trusted auto repair shop. It may take going to several different mechanics before you find one you are truly comfortable with. Pose questions to this professional to find out what approach they will take to repair your car or what alternatives are available. Shopping around also gives you the best opportunity to find the cheapest rate or the fastest service, as some garages may be backed up with other vehicles that need repair first.
A recommended way to locate a trustworthy auto repair professional is to seek out customer reviews. Online sites offer honest opinions from real customers who have used a business. Read through this feedback to learn how a business operates and what you can expect if you were to take your vehicle there. Look for reviews about how quick maintenance was completed and if prices were fair. By learning what other people have said about a garage, you can gain a better idea if it's the right place to go when you have a car problem in need of fixing.
It can be difficult to know which automotive problems are serious enough to require expert assistance. A ripped seat cushion or broken radio don't involve safety and will not warrant enough of a problem that going into a garage is required. However, setbacks with brakes, lights and other parts that are vital to the safety of your car's driver and passengers, as well as others on the road, necessitate quick fixes. Many modern automobiles will notify drivers of an issue, in the form of a signal on the dashboard or a noise within the vehicle.
In the event of an accident, even if your vehicle does not appear to have any damage on the outside, it is generally recommended that you see a trusted auto repair professional. Internal damage may have occurred, or an important part may have been knocked out of place. Fixing these issues before driving much further can prevent further vehicle breakdowns in the future. In the case of a serious accident, a body shop can assess the problems and determine the best course of action for repairs, as well as evaluate how much they will cost.
Beyond that, regular checkups are recommended. Tires must be rotated, fluids needs to be replaced and the engine must be evaluated. After driving 25,000 miles, most auto dealers suggest having the vehicle checked out to ensure everything is running smoothly. Taking the car into the auto repair professional you trust will protect you from further problems down the road.
Not every type of auto repair work needs to be done by a certified mechanic. You can fix some of a vehicle's issues just by paying attention to how the automobile is running and having a basic understanding of auto repair. Look over the ways weather may impact your car and what preventative measures you can take to avoid having to take it into the shop. At the same time, be aware of mechanic scams that can impact your experience.
Preventing Trips To The Professional
Some fixes to your car can be done without paying a specialist. Issues like replacing oil and air filters are relatively simple, with instructions provided in the owner's manual on how to make these changes. The same goes for replacing broken windshield wipers or burnt-out headlights. Such issues should be repaired quickly to guarantee safety, but don't require a visit to a garage. By handling these types of tasks on your own, you'll gain a better understanding for how your car operates and save time and money.
Along with understanding how to fix manageable vehicle issues that may arise, taking preventative measures to avoid future problems is a valuable time saver. Many problem-solving best practices are related to the seasons. Your vehicle will be in different conditions in the winter than in the summer, meaning it requires a different type of preparation.
In the spring and summer, you want to be sure your air conditioner and cooling systems work correctly. Given the high temperatures the vehicle will be exposed to, overheating is a common problem. Look over the system by ensuring there is enough coolant available. If it needs to be refilled, it is best to open the hood and add more to the car before it gets too warm out. Also, clean out fan ducts and other ventilation sources necessary for summertime driving.
For winter driving, features such as the defroster, heater and exhaust system are paramount. Look in your owner's manual for specific directions on how features should be checked and repaired. Many newer cars have a cabin air filter that can be replaced when needed, allowing warm air to continue to flow in. Also, check your tires before winter driving, as they need to be at the proper pressure to perform well on snow and ice.
There is a common worry among many people that auto repair professionals take advantage of the general public. Because so many people are unaware of how to fix the problems in their vehicle, they are nervous of being overcharged by mechanics or worried that the improper work is being done.
While the great majority of professionals in the industry are honest, hard-working people, a few bad apples can ruin everything. You should be extra careful when first visiting a mechanic to guarantee that the price you're charged and maintenance the vehicle receives are fair.
Among the common scams pulled are needless repairs, where a garage charges you for work that isn't necessary. Another popular one is attracting customers through a cheap oil change or tire pressure check. Then, when you are in the shop and your car is being repaired, they give you a long list of other corrections they'd like to make, therefore boosting the total cost of your bill.
The best way to combat these types of problems is getting a written estimate before work is done. That way, you can see how much repairs are expected to cost. If the final bill is higher than the estimate projected, ask to specifically see the work. Make sure information is put in writing as well. If a problem remains, you can have proof that work was not done to your satisfaction.
By working closely with an auto repair professional and doing some of the tune-up work on your own, you will be less likely to fall for these scams. At the same time, you'll be able to drive out with a clean and healthy vehicle, thanks to the repairs made by a trained professional.
