Excellent Cakes

I have placed several orders with Chef Michael at Let Them Eat Cake and I have never been disappointed. A couple years ago my daughter had a Twilight- themed birthday party so we had a cake made to match. All the girls and parents were amazed at how awesome the cake looked and tasted! Last year my family celebrated my grandmother's 94th birthday so I enlisted Chef Michael to create a classic pink and green cake (her favorite colors)... it was probably the most beautiful cake I have ever seen--simply elegant and absolutely delicious! I live all the way out in NW Hillsborough County and make the drive over to S. Tampa especially for these delectable cakes.

Don't waste your time, Publix has better cakes!!!


I ordered a Phillies baseball cake for my husband's 30th birthday. I called and placed the order three weeks before his birthday. Chef Michael told me that it would be fifty dollars, so I was expecting an awesome cake. I had an original date of pick up for a Saturday morning, I called back a week and a half to change the date to the following Monday. They said no problem!

To my surprise, I get a call that Saturday a half an hour before they close wondering where I was to pick up my cake. I told them I changed the date over a week ago to be picked up on Monday and the guy says, ""oh yeah I see that now"", and I said ""well the cake isn't made yet is it?? and he assured me that it wasn't.

I go to pick up my cake Monday afternoon and was very disappointed at how small it was! For fifty dollars I should have gotten a little bit bigger of a cake, but I figured it was the taste that mattered so I didn't care. I took the cake home, later that night we cut it up and to our surprise, it was the most dry cake I have ever had. We were both extremely disappointed!!

I called on Monday to discuss my disappointment and Chef Michael said I don't know whats going on, I'll call you back when I figure it out. He never called. I called back the following day and lets just say the conversation did not go well. He was the least bit concerned, and did not care that I got a four day old cake!! He told me that it in fact had been made Friday and that they were closed Sunday and Monday and so the cake had in fact been sitting there for four days. NO WONDER the cake was dry!! He said the original ticket said Saturday pickup and if I had come in when I originally placed my order I would have had a fresh cake. I said, I called a week and a half before it was made to change my order and they said they could do it. I should have never been told that my cake could have been made when they were closed. He actually said to me, ""What? Do you expect me to bring in a chef and pay them over time for a fifty dollar cake??"" I was appalled. I said no, all I would have wanted was for someone to tell me that my cake wouldn't be fresh since I was picking it up on a day that you are normally closed. Instead the staff lied to me and tried to pass a four day old cake on to me and told me it was fresh.

What a HORRIBLE experience. All Chef Michael could say was I will give you a discount on another cake when you come in. WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD I COME BACK AND ORDER ANOTHER CAKE WHEN THEY SOLD ME A FOUR DAY OLD CAKE???

This place is extremely overpriced, and the cake is not even good. You can get twice the size for half the price at Publix, and I guarantee the customer service will be better as well as the taste.

Great service, Great cake!

NOT one bad thing to say about this talented genuine man and his cake shop....I choose this place for my wedding cake last December and I was NOT disappointed! We shopped around for a while before we decided to give him a call expecting his prices to be higher with all the rave reviews Ive heard about his shop. Long story short, we have a last minute change in plans and needed a new cake decorator two weeks before our wedding! I was panicking! And everyone wanted to charge me outrageousness prices because they were ""booked"" or ""rushed""..I called him with my spirits down and he picked them right up again when he said he can do it! Not only that but when we scheduled our ""free"" taste test, he was there guiding us through all the amazing flavors to choose from...I was so full by the end of the session... and in the end we picked a three layered cake with three different mouth watering flavors for each layer. When I showed him some pictures of what I wanted he was right on key with me. When we arrived at the reception hall I saw my beautiful cake on display on the cake table and was pleased beyond belief. And the taste was even better. He even included our monograms for free made completely out of chocolate.....(other places wanted to charge us for that too)....Wanna hear the ""topping on the cake"" and as to why I'm writing my review a YEAR later (sorry chef Michael) is because he promised us a FREE top layer cake of the same flavor on our 1 year anniversary. And I just called him to place my order, he picked up and said he can get it for me tomorrow!! YAY! My mouth is watering just thinking about tasting that deliciousness that was my wedding cake a year ago on my special day. EVERYONE loved my cake and I will always refer people to Chef Michael!

Overpriced and Overrated

We ordered our cake from Chef Michael a good 6 months before our wedding day. I attempted to go over the details of what we wanted and he blew us off every time, constantly with the ""I got this attitude and I'm too busy to talk to you"". We made an appointment for a cake tasting and waited over an hour! I gave Chef Michael a picture of an exact replica of the cake we wanted and he gave us the wrong color cake. Not to mention the cake itself was disappointing. It tasted stale, like it had been made a week earlier. Last but not least, when we ordered our cake he said to come back in a year for our complimentary 1 year anniversary cake. We called today to order it and Chef Michael said he doesn't know who we are because he doesn't keep track of his customers. How professional is that??? I don't care who you've made cakes for in the past, but this is no way to treat customers who pay way too much for their cakes. Lesson learned, when in doubt, go to Publix....their cakes taste better and are way cheaper!
Be warned, Let Them Eat Cake does not care about you if you're not rich or a celebrity!

Brides beware of Chef Michael

My wedding last year was perfect on the Yacht Starship, except for the one mistake with the cake.

I bought a cake topper and Chef Michael left it behind. The one mistake I thought I could live with for my wedding. However, I was promised an Anniversary cake. I called and ordered the lemon filling cake. To my surprise, My husband and I cut into a chocolate cake - no lemon filling which is my husband's favorite.

I am very disappointed. And have no desire to order another cake from Chef Michael.

Brides beware of Chef Michael. He does not care.

Unless you are a celebrity or tampa elite - he will not care about you. There are a ton of places in Tampa to get a cake - just save yourself a headache and go somewhere else.

The best cookies EVER!

Chef Micheal is not only a great person and extremely fun to work with he also saved my event. VERY last minute he was able to deliver 10 dozen desserts to a corporate luncheon in Tampa. I am located in CT and knowing that this was being handled for me was a great relief. Everyone said the desserts were wonderful and wanted to know where they came from! Next time I am Tampa - I will be coming to Let Them East Cake and Chef Micheal is getting a big hug and kiss from me!

I called in an order and received a price (a decent price, and was very happy). HOWEVER, TWO DAYS before the cake was to be made I was called and told that the cake price had DOUBLED! I spoke with the Chef and he told me he did not care about repeat customers. Goodluck with that.

Amazing cake

Chef Michael and his staff did an amazing job on my wedding cake. My wife and I have never been happier with what was presented to us. Michael made sure to give us the time we needed to make our decisions and helped us every step of the way. The next time I need a cake for any occasion I will most defiantly be calling Let Them Eat Cake.

Get it in writing and more!

I was getting married in February of 2008. My dream wedding on the beach - my dream vera dress - and my dream man. I went to the very best in every aspect! The best that I heard was Let Them Eat Cake! I talked to Chef Michael A YEAR before the wedding even took place - picked out my cake, filling, colors and everything. I was doing individual cakes for all of my guests to serve as the final course. A month before the wedding I called to confirm everything was going to be as it was so that I could print it out on the menu. I spoke with Chef Michael and he told me that everything was great and in fact he had a wonderful new idea for my cakes. He told me my little three layer cakes would be a beautiful Frangipan cake on the top 2 layers and on the bottom layer would be a chocolate brownie covered in a chocolate ganache and drizzled with a light blue icing (my colors were brown, blue and silver). So that is what I had printed on the menu. Didn't give it a second thought - raved to EVERYONE about my cakes beforehand and as I sit waiting on my final course to arrive I am completely floored that what was placed in front of me was a white cake with gold glitter all over them! I was so embarassed! The menu was right there in front of every one of my guests!

Afterwards I called Chef Michael and his assistant which promised me that the situation would be rectified. Never received a call back !

So my review is not that great - he makes good cake don't get me wrong just make sure that he cares enough about you as one of his brides to do it right! You do pay him for it you know.

Final thought - the wedding went absolutely perfect - no flaw whatsoever EXCEPT for the cakes. He should be embarassed that he didn't care enough and that he is the one and only negative on someones special day!

The Perfect Wedding Cake Designer

Chef Michael and his entire staff are absolutely wonderful! Everything you taste is fabulous. The cake he did for me and my husband was a one of a kind and out of this world cake. I cannot express enough how great his deserts are. If you want something unique and tasty that just makes your mouth water, Let Them Eat Cake is the place to go!

Chef Michael is not only a superb pastry chef, he is an amazing artist. If you want something nobody else can offer, you go see Michael. On a personal note, Michael is also a generous and terrific person. Over the years he has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars of his time and merchandise. He is very friendly and helpful and really a great guy.

For several years

I've ordered cakes and chocolate work from Let Them Eat Cake for about 10 years and everytime I need something I keep finding myself at their shop. I guess because Chef Mike Ostrander Chef Michael Baugh and Chef Mary Bowyer come up with some fabulous ideas to surprise my friends and family. I have yet to be disappointed. This is one of the most unique places in the state and probably the country. And with the talents of the three chefs, I feel fortunate to have them in my back yard. You don't get to be Best of the Bay by putting out shabby products. These guys are bar none the best around. I wish them much success in the years to come.
