Dr. Shim has been in practice in the Tampa Bay area since 1993. While he has a subspecialty interest in spine surgery, he can provide opinions and care for most areas of orthopaedic surgery. Ultrasound
For certain patients, the pain and stiffness can be overwhelming. The guidance of a Physical Therapist, as well as some gentle tissue massage, ultrasound and electrical stimulation may be necessary to help patients overcome the pain and the fear associated with stretching and exercise. We usually recommend patients go to therapy, with a goal of transitioning to their own home exercise and stretching program within 4-6 weeks.
MRI
The key patterns of referral of pain for patients with SI joint problems include thigh, and the knee. Around 50% of these patients report pain in the back of their thigh. Although there is a lack of clearly defined guidelines when it comes to diagnosing SI joint pain, physicians look for pain patterns and reproduction of the buttock and leg pain by pressing on the joint. An MRI is the preferred diagnostic test for evaluating this problem.
Radiology

These injections can help alleviate pain in the neck, shoulders, back and legs for certain conditions. The decision to have an injection is usually made after conservative treatment options (activity modification, medications, and physical therapy) have failed. Any radiology results you have (MRI, CT Scans) will also be considered before injections are recommended.

Computed Tomography
A broken neck bone is a more obvious finding on x-rays and CT scans. When an athlete complains, and has associated numbness, or nerve issues, these tests are standard ways to access for fractures. The treatment options will be determined by the type of fracture and the neurologic status of the injured athlete.

Sciatica
Lumbar Discectomy surgery has been shown to be successful with good to excellent results in up to 90% of patients with sciatica (leg pain) based on a single level disc herniation with appropriate patient selection. This surgery is much more predictable for alleviating leg pain than back pain. Despite a successful outcome from surgery, a small percentage will develop a recurrent disc herniation at the same level.
