Serving the Tampa Area
Today is Friday December 30th. When I look you up online it says that you're open from 9 to 5 and when I called the store it says we are currently on the line assisting other customers then it also says that you are open from 9 to 5 today. It's an hour and 45 minute drive one way so I drove all the way to the store just to see that they are closed. So with traffic today I'm wasting almost 4 hours because somebody didn't update that they were not open today

Piper Marine is outstanding! I took my boat to them to have it re-powered and couldn’t be happier with the staff and service. They completed the job on time and at the estimated price. Ron and Chris kept me informed of the progress and issues as they completed the job. They even called me twice to follow up on how the break-in process was going. They are extremely knowledgeable (30yrs experience) and take the extra time to give you all the details you need. I highly recommend you give them a call or stop in.
Very reasonable pricing and good workmanship
Wanted to relay the experience I had this week dealing with T. A. Mahoneys. Took my boat and trailer in there on 10/30/13 around 2pm. Met Brett and he came out to take a look at my boat and trailer and we discussed what I wanted to do on the trailer and boat. For the trailer, I decided to get new trailer lights and harness, new bunks, u-bolts, nuts, hubs, and bearing buddys. For the boat, I needed to get a new bilge pump, a scupper fitting and a new SS prop. I also talked with him about removing the motor and re-sealing the motor bolt holes with 5200 because I have a leak somewhere, but apparently he didn’t write that down cause it wasn’t on the written quoteHe was taking down what I wanted to do and giving me verbal prices on each item. I asked him for a quote on parts and labor for the job. He started to add up numbers and saying them out loud. He quickly got to $500 and then jumped to $750 and then the final number he told me was $1500. We discussed it for a while and he felt I was putting him on the spot. I was there to get an accurate quote. Then he told me he was kind of rushing because he wanted to get to lunch. I asked to please go over these figures again. Finally, he started to write stuff down with prices. Got to around $500 for parts, hesitated and then told me around $1,000. This is a lot different than $1500. I said ok let’s do it. He said he would call me in two days with a final quote. The afternoon of 11/1 (two days later) came around and no word. I called and he returned my call two hours later. He said that the estimate of around $1500 was about right. I advised him that I could not afford that and that the $1000 estimate seemed more reasonable. I said I was on my way to pick up the boat. When I got there, he gave me the estimate on paper. They hooked up my boat, which was now filthy with dirt, leaves and other markings that weren’t there before. Got back to the house and reviewed the estimate. Below is what I was verbally quoted when I was there compared to what is on the paper quote. Prices given to me verbally were definitely different than what they actually turned out to be. There certainly seemed to be some bait-n-switch going on at this place.Verbal quote Quote on paperBilge - $50 Bilge - $67.99Scupper fitting - $4 Scupper fitting - $9.99 (I only wanted one replaced but they were charging me for two at $9.99 apiece)SS prop - $300 SS prop - $325 (and this was still an approximation)For these three items to be installed I was going to be charged 3.5 hours of labor at $90/hr for a total of $315. There is no way it would take this long. He said originally it would be an hour for the bilge. So 2 ½ hrs to replace the scupper fitting and to put on a new prop?!Now for the trailer. Some items he just didn’t give me a price or was talking so fast, I just couldn’t keep up. This is the only one I remember.New hubs - $50 ($25 apiece) New hubs - $79.98 for bothTo change the lights, bunks/brackets/bolts/nuts and install bearing buddys I was being charged 4.5 hours of labor at $75.00, which totals $337.50.The verbal quotes went from $1500 to $1000 to a written quote of over $1426. Needless to say they will not get any business from me for repairs for my boat or trailer.
Best and most honest boat mechanic in Tampa. I have owned boats for almost 20 years and have never been to a mechanic I trust more than Pete. I won't take my boat anywhere else.Adrien
It is kinda tucked into a office building right near the corner of Gandy and Westshore. It is just north of the Shell station. Getting in and out during rush hour can be a little tough, but if you can avoid those times they have some pretty cool stuff for the boat. We picked up a new set of JL speakers and some tervis tumblers for our booze cruises! They had a pretty decent selection of boat supplies too, not as much as a westmarine but fairly close.
These guys are the best! We've been using Piper's Marine to handle all of the service on our boats for the past 10 years. This is a very friendly family owned and operated business and they do great quality work. If you have Mercury motors or Mercruisers, there is no better place in the Tampa Bay area to have them serviced or repaired.
Do Not Use Ron Pipers services! He Put Illegal Vessel Id on my boat! Hired Pipers Marine 01/09/2012 to do work on boat just purchased, included put Florida Registration Numbers on bow and registration properly. I provided Ron with legal lettering that met USCG guidelines, Instead, Ron Piper took it upon himself to put his letters and numbers on. For spending almost $1,000, he put the decals on for free. When I picked up boat 01/24/2012 first notified he put his own on.I was boarded by Coast Guard, July 8, 2012 and told lettering was illegal. All vessel identification have to be block, like the ones I provided Ron to put on. Explained what Piper's had done and they were kind enough give me 30 days to rectify problem, or be fined. Coast Guard will be contacting me to verify this has been done or I receive the fine.I called and spoke with Ron Piper, July 9 2012 and was told by him "then you need to get those replaced don't you". I told him I wanted him to remove and put what I gave him on to start on it! He replied: "No, think I'll just give your money back you paid to have it done". His ego obviously could not handle he had made such a huge error. Bottom line, Ron Piper put illegal registration decal on my boat and should be held responsible! His arrogant, uncaring attitude is what is so upsetting!
