Behavioral Counseling
When trying to treat with fears and phobias there are five steps that need to be addressed: 1) safety; 2) environmental modification; 3) behavior modification; 4) anxiety reduction; and 5) prevention. Safety is a consideration even in the dog that has not shown aggression. Dogs under stress can act out aggressively even when they typically would not. You should make a list of situations when the dog has acted out aggressively and avoid these situations. When you modify the environment it is recommended that you: 1) create a safe zone; 2) utilize boarding/daycare during stressful events; 3) enrich the dog's environment; and 4) strategic feeding. General behavior modification includes: 1) independence from the owner; 2) adding structure; 3) focus exercises; 4) relaxation exercises; 5) distraction and redirection during stressful events; 6) counter-conditioning to fear-producing stimuli and; 7) desensitization and counter-conditioning to fear-producing stimuli.

Comprehensive Examination
Today's modern anesthetic monitors have made surgery much safer than in the past. Here at Lakewood Animal Hospital, we do a thorough physical exam on your pet before administering anesthetics, to ensure that a fever or other illness won't be a problem. We also adjust the amount and type of anesthetic used depending on the health of your pet. The handout on anesthesia explains this in greater detail.

Parasites Treatment and Control
Mosquitoes don't discriminate. They bite you, they bite your cat. But when they sink their teeth into your feline friend, they might cause more than an itch. Mosquitoes can transmit heartworm larvae to cats. If these microscopic larvae settle in cats' lungs, they can cause big health problems. There's no cure for feline heartworm disease, but it is 100 percent preventable. Read below to learn more, then talk with your veterinarian about which prevention method is best for keeping your cat and its ticker heartworm-free.
Pain Management
Anything that causes pain in people can be expected to cause pain in animals. Pets may not show the same symptoms of pain as people do; they usually don't whine or cry, but you can be sure they feel it. Pain medications needed will depend on the surgery performed. Major procedures require more pain relief than things like minor lacerations.
Vomiting Treatment
Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
Mosquitoes are carriers of heartworm larvae. When a mosquito bites a cat, the larvae enter the cat's system through the bite wound. When these larvae develop into adult heartworms, they eventually die and cause severe heart inflammation that can be fatal. Even though the presence of adult heartworms is potentially deadly, the little larvae can be even more problematic. Most larvae don't make it to adulthood in cats, which means they die in the cat's lungs. The irritation leads to heartworm-associated respiratory disease (HARD). Studies show that 50 percent of cats infected with heartworm larvae have significant disease in the arteries that supply blood to their lungs. Our dental services include teeth cleaning and polishing, tooth extractions and minor oral surgery. We utilize state of the art dental equipment to ultrasonically clean and polish each tooth. This allows your pet to have a healthy and clean mouth.

Our services and facilities are designed to assist in routine preventive care for young, healthy animals; early detection and treatment of disease as your companion animal ages; and complete medical and surgical care as necessary during his or her lifetime.
Spaying and Neutering
Spaying or neutering can be done at approximately 4 to 6 months of age. Your pet is given an exam prior to surgery to help determine whether your pet is healthy enough to undergo the surgical procedure. Current vaccinations are required at the time of surgery. Also a pre-anesthetic blood screen is recommended prior to undergoing anesthesia and surgery.

Laboratory Services
We offer three levels of in-house blood testing before surgery, which we will go over with you when you bring your pet in. Our doctors prefer the more comprehensive screen, because it gives them the most information to ensure the safety of your pet. For geriatric or ill pets, additional blood tests, electrocardiograms, or x-rays may be required before surgery as well.
