Johnston Construction Co

We live on Fort Lewis in an area that has many young children. Johnston Construction was contracted by our apartment management company, Equity Residential, to construct a trash enclosure in front of our town homes.



During the time they have been here, they have excavated several large areas and holes approximately 10' X 12' wide and up to four feet deep. They have not barricaded any work area, construction site, or heavy equipment, which was left on site during non-working hours, including entire weekends. They tore out existing sidewalks on which children walk to and from school and did not provide an alternate route. They poured cement foundations using rebar for reinforcement and did not block off the area. They constructed cinderblock walls and placed scaffolding around the walls to support them, with cinderblocks used to weigh down the tops of the scaffolding. The blocks were literally hanging from the edge, ready to topple off at the slightest bump. Because there were no barricades, children were seen climbing on the site and throwing various pieces of equipment and trash.



I have also witnessed this company using large equipment to tear out sidewalks, literally swinging 3' X 3' pieces of concrete over residents' cars, which were legally parked in their assigned spaces. Johnston Construction did not contact any resident regarding the construction, they did not block off the area around which the heavy equipment was being used, nor did they ask residents to move their vehicles so that no damage might be done to them. They also parked a large vehicle in my front yard, even though there was space available elsewhere, and they hooked up their construction hose to a resident's water without asking permission.



This company has no regard either for common courtesy nor for the safety of the residents in our community. Even though I contacted Johnston Construction and Equity Residential regarding this situation and the obvious hazards to the children of the neighborhood, they have chosen to blatantly ignore my concerns, and left this very dangerous area exposed. We may live on a military post, but we deserve to be treated in a manner similar to our civilian neighbors.
