When I joined Planet Fitness on the 2101 University Drive location in 2004, I was not told that the only way to cancel a membership was by a certified letter. If it was in the contract, I never saw it and the sales person never mentioned it. When I did not want to renew my membership the next year I simply did not sign on again and the people at that location never said a thing to me and I did not receive a bill of any sort. I closed whatever credit card I had used for the monthly bill. My mailing address was easy to find by my forwarding address, so I know they never tried to bill me. My credit score has been between 780-815 the last few years. Recently I ordered a credit report and discovered that they had turned my name over to a professional credit collector, and this has brought my credit score. Only when I called that credit collector did I discover that Planet Fitness has this policy of regularly abusing customers that do not want to renew. If they really had any interest in my business they would have sent me a bill or some sort of notice in the mail when they no longer received my monthly payment. I believe the reason they do not try to contact you for three years is so they can exploit their opportunity to try to stick you with three years of membership fees. I have contacted the credit bureau but I do not yet have a resolution. I would never deal with this company again as I am sure they know exactly how deceptive their practices are. Two other friends of mine have had the same experience with this gym and you will want to make sure it doesn't happen to you.
