Ovarian Cancer
If breast or ovarian cancer runs in your family, it is recommended that you discuss whether genetic testing is right for you. Dr. Templeton can fully explain the risks and benefits, and how testing could affect you and your family. This is a simple blood or saliva test performed in our office that looks for changes or mutations in many genes including the two most common genes called BRCA-1 and BRCA-2. Women who inherit these genes have a higher-than-average chance of developing breast or ovarian cancer and may need additional screening or preventative treatment.
Cancer Care
Dr. Templeton collaborates with other doctors in cancer care in a multi-disciplinary approach at The Methodist Hospital-Sugar Land and Memorial Hermann-Memorial City Hospital. She participates in various research programs alongside other specialists to spearhead advances in cancer treatment for women of all ages.

Anxiety

Ultrasound
In women who have a breast lump or an abnormal mammogram, a breast biopsy may be needed. Most can be done in our office with a local anesthetic to maximize your comfort during the procedure. Biopsies are usually done to check a lump found during breast examination or after a suspicious mammogram or ultrasound that did not yield adequate answers. All women with an abnormality should have a needle guided biopsy done first prior to any surgical biopsies. This is the standard of care and always practiced in our office.
MRI
Breast care has seen tremendous progress in our lifetime, with great improvements in survivability. With advancements in screening with digital and 3D mammography and breast MRI, we are finding smaller cancers in their earlier stages. Genetic testing is helping identify women who are at higher risk of developing cancer and therefore should be followed more closely. Ultrasound guided biopsies quickly diagnose abnormalities and determine if cancer is present. Cancer treatments better coordinate advanced surgical techniques along with adjuvant treatment of chemotherapy, radiation and hormone blocking that is customized for the type and extent of the cancer.

Mammography
I had only seen my new gynecologist once before, and I didn’t remember too much about him, good or bad. But I was trusting. On Friday, January 21, 2011, I explained my “discovery” to him as he reviewed my last mammography results, 13 months prior, in December 2009. Yes, I was one month overdue, with plans to take care of the annual misery of being flattened like a pancake within the upcoming month. He then did a very brief exam, and without any pomp or circumstance, informed me that I was imagining things, and it was most likely a RIB that I was feeling! His attitude was very condescending and dismissive, as he scheduled a chest x-ray for that afternoon. He also requested that I get a mammogram “soon”, and wasn’t worried when the facility he was associated with could not/would not perform the test any sooner than 3 weeks in the future. I had to bite my tongue. I told him I would definitely get the x-ray as he requested (which was negative for any rib abnormalities), but I would NOT wait 3 weeks for a mammogram. I left his office and immediately called a friend at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital.

It is the understanding and monitoring your individual risk level, finding abnormalities as early as possible, receiving a timely cancer diagnosis, providing expert surgical treatment, and monitoring you after cancer treatment is complete. Cancer treatment coordinates advanced surgical techniques used to remove your tumor along with coordinated treatment of chemotherapy, radiation and hormone blocking that is customized for the type and extent of your cancer.
