Personal Experience with a Unprofessional Teacher Here

Most of the teachers here are really good. However, there are bad apples, here is my experience...

The incident that occurred 6/15/2011 9:16 AM was devastating and extremely insulting to me, my daughter, my culture and lifestyle. Ms. Silva deeply expressed insult after insult. Fully exposing her ignorance and insensitivity to differences. My daughter is 3 and when I dropped her off at school her teacher asked me:
""Is that extensions?""

""Did you wash her hair?""

""Your daughter stinks every day and that stuff in her hair stinks. I know it may be hard for you to wash it every day because it's messy and all that stuff is in there or whatever, but the kids make fun of her every day. Even Ms. Narine her other teacher talked about how your daughter stinks. I'm glad you took that stuff out her hair this is better. You can wash her hair everyday with her hair like this.""

""You need to wash her hair everyday""

Firstly, the STUFF in her hair are braids. It would behoove you to educate yourself of these small little cultural habits. Ms. Silva refers to braids as stuff and messy, this is highly disrespectful. Neither I nor my daughter deserves such ridicule. Braids go back thousands of years and in some cultures (like mine) it takes a long time to do, people put a lot of energy into it, when they finish, the hair is beautiful and artistic. Ms. Silva is ruining ABC little's reputation with her ignorance and lack of will to educate herself.
Secondly, if my daughter stinks every day, kids make fun of her and all the other teachers know, why hasn't anyone told me? I can easily assume it's because no one cares, and I'm allowed to bring my daughter to school every day while unknowingly, the children in her class are making fun of her.
Thirdly, Ms. Silva told me I need to wash my daughter's hair every day. Another ignorant insult. I did not bring my daughter to school 6/15/2011 for the both of us to be deeply offended and castigated by Ms. Silva. Clearly she is culturally ignorant on a massive level. This is extremely dangerous being she works with children from different backgrounds. Furthermore, she hasn't educated herself on diversity yet when she works with diverse kids every day, why? One can clearly assume it's because she doesn't care. She doesn't care about respecting cultural diversity and because she lets my daughter get made fun of without telling me, I can conclude she doesn't care about my daughter either. This is a key component when dealing with children, care. Ms. Silva is truly a bad apple within the ABC little faculty staff.
Fourthly, it is immensely unprofessional to talk about incidents that occur with students to other teachers. Now I clearly know that staff members talk about the students, their problems and incidents, to each other and behind the backs of parents. I thought highly of ABC Little. To me, it was the best preschool in the area. After my experiences today, I would not recommend this school to anyone because of the cultural ignorance, the belittlement we received and the fact that the teachers talk about the students to each other in a non-positive manner.
Here are a few suggestions to ensure the up most childcare quality and that something like this won't happen to another family.
1. Suggestion 1 Do not allow teachers to talk about student incidents with other teachers.
2. Suggestion 2 Become more diversity aware and learn about other cultures especially the ones that attend your school.
3. Suggestion 3 If a child is being made fun of by her peers, the parent should be notified
Thank you so much for reading this letter. I feel it is now my responsibility to share my experiences with others so no one else will be as unfortunate as I and humiliated by an ABC Little School teacher. No one deserves to have such a calamitous experience.
