We thought Shane Niccum Stair Co. was the best contractor for our project. We purchased most all materials. We wanted an experienced contractor to install properly. Experience was dissatisfying. Several delays, Shane Niccum & helper James installed the new stair treads, risers, balusters, handrail and newels. We noticed several mistakes: 1) two risers installed too short; one with a 1/4" gap to tread and one with a 1" gap to tread, each very visible. 2) gaps in the trim on the skirting too large to caulk & a gap where the handrail met the top of the carved wood newel. 3) wrought iron newel was not stable; not secure at the base, installed incorrectly. 4) he used liquid nails adhesive to install each baluster leaving globs of adhesive on each; not cleaning it off. We contacted him after noticing all these issues; he assured us he would correct them. Several days later, he sent helper James to take care of the issues (he could not complete by himself). Called Shane again, stated he would complete himself. After a week of non-communication, Shane showed without materials for corrections. He never returned. No successful communication with Shane since. After 2 weeks no corrections were made. Had to reschedule carpet installation & the finishing process of stairs & handrails & hire contractor to re-do project properly. To complete correctly, had to purchase new wrought iron newel & mounting bracket (original newel cut incorrectly & installed irreparably). Took 11 hrs to remove liquid nails adhesive off balusters; time consuming with a rented heat gun. Had to hire contractor to replace the 2 risers cut short; including re-sand, stain & finish. Hired contractor to fix gaps in trim on skirt & newel, & re-install wrought iron newel & mounting bracket. Invoiced Shane for additional materials & labor cost to hire contractor to correct issues. Shane Niccum Stair Co has not reimbursed us the cost to correct issues nor communicated with us. Additional expense of $1050.
