I've been bringing tempermental VW's to Carl for about twelve years, as well as my husband's older model Prius. Carl is a wonderful mechanic if you're looking for someone who is skilled, honest, charges a fair price for their labor and services, and will be there six months (or ten years!) from now when you go to look him up again. You're not getting an entry-level mechanic, you can't expect dollar store prices. He has diagnosed very difficult problems for me, helped me triage repairs when money was tight, and he's also sent me elsewhere when it was something he couldn't do. To add to another review I saw, I have never felt diminished or condescended to due to my gender, and when I clearly knew what I was talking about, he listens and doesn't try to explain it from the sticks on up - no need to ask my husband (who knows less about VW's than I do!) to deal with Drake Auto.When I was growing up, we called the people who actually fixed our cars when the dealership couldn't, "shade tree mechanics", because you pulled up beneath the big shade tree on the side of their driveway for them to work. Carl and Kyle are the best shade tree mechanics I've ever worked with, with all the modern conveniences and high tech diagnostic tools. One suggestion - when he gives you directions to the shop, listen to them, don't assume you'll be able to find it because you know where the street is. The new location is a little hard to find, but very worth it! When I got my new car, I felt like I needed divorce papers. Luckily our aging Prius has kept us in touch, and my car is out of warranty soon. ;)
This is to respond to my other reviewer. This car came in for tire installation and a bad motor. When I went to install the tires the studs were not long enough. This is a custom install with 24 inch rims on a older Caprice. I ordered studs and had them on in a few days. I called the customer and told him he needed a new motor. I always take a deposit before starting motor jobs. He said that was fine but he didn't have his credit card with him and I should call him back on Friday. When I called he said he would not have the money until next Friday and to call him them. I got no answer. When he finally called me a week later he said he was back at work and could make a $500 deposit in a week. This went on for some time then he sent an email one day saying he didn't think he should have to give a deposit and felt I just wanted a deposit because he was black. I told him I was very offended by his comment and one of my best friends is black and he needs to just pay me $60 for the cost of parts and I would not charge him any labor and take his car somewhere else. A couple weeks later his girlfriend paid for the car on her credit card and then this review pops up?
I have been bringing my car to Carl for the last 10 years. I have never once left the shop feeling taken advantage of or disappointed in the quality of work. When you drive your car away from Drake Auto you can feel confident that your car is repaired properly, that the wheels will stay on and that it isn't held together by duct tape. I brought my car to Drake Auto after having the routine maintenance done at the dealership. The auto department at the dealership claimed that I need $2000 worth of repairs. Brought the car to Carl for a second opinion. Guess what? Not only did I not need the the repairs they said I did. They missed a crucial issue with the car where the transmission was basically bouncing up and down. Carl confirmed that the repair was covered under my warranty and got the part ordered and fixed. Carl is an honest and master -mechanic. Which I know may be a shock if you are used to dealing with crooked ones. Your car could not be in better hands than with Carl. Shane & Anita
I visited Dulles auto care this afternoon. I have a 2005 Toyota Camry. It was making lots of noise from under the engine and there was a leak from engine. The repair shop nearby told me I need a new engine and will cost near $2000. I was not willing to spend that much on my car. I was driving by and saw their banners on the road and I thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. There was an extremely long line and was very busy. Lots of cars waiting. I had walked in the office and there was a man named Awais. He was the owner of the place and friendly. I asked him what is the problem and cost. He brought the car In a few minutes later and checked it out. He came back and said the water pump kit needs to be replaced. The cost was 350 including everything. I agrees and my car is running great now. I recommend this workshop if you have any car problems.- John Wayne

I had a tire issue that I had purchased from Ashburn Park Plaza Parkhurst tires and it was a bad batch of tires that was stalled in my Toyota nobody in MERCHANTS which step up and help me for the warranty of my tire and I purchased a five year warranty for that as well but I have to say The manager Joey in Sterling Potomac merchant tires was an outstanding performance of customer service and he went every angle and every step out of his way to help me and solve my issue of my tires I did have to cough up some money but I got the best service I can ever imagine from this one manager "Joey"!!Thank you Joey!
What can I say. Anyone can write anything they want on the web. First review says they left their car at my shop for weeks and I never even opened the hood. Hmm interesting. Something doesn't sound right here. I am an honest business owner trying to make a profit and be fair at the same time. In this economy I am practically giving service away. I'm sorry but it would be ridiculous to believe I would keep a car for weeks and not even open the hood and then charge $2000. I would at least open the hood ! Only kidding.
I was in last week to get an oil change, tire rotation, and state inspection. While I was unimpressed with how long it took (over 2 hours and it wasn't a long line), I was surprised at what I saw when they changed the oil. I'd paid for synthetic oil and the tech put regular oil in, but before I could say anything, he recognized the mistake, drained the regular oil, and replaced it with the synthetic. Maybe they were slow, but I'll take slow if it means they're honest.
I have to be fair and say I love this place , the modern renovations, cozy inside bar, great outdoor overlooking the lake , the food and the service. BUT the price is not so good., and the pour is very bad . The really charge too much for tap beer. $8 for a pint of beer is too much . $9 for a bad pour whiskey .. I think the management should consider reasonable pricing to attract more customers . I still recommend this place if you don't care about your bar tab
