Primary Care
Visiting with your child’s primary care physician will always be the least expensive option. If an ailment can be treated by a PCP, it's best to avoid the high cost and wait time of an emergency room.
Family Practice
Whenever it is possible to visit your family doctor, and waiting is safe for your child, we recommend doing so. This will allow families to maintain care within their family practice, which allows for better continuity of care and is more cost-effective than an ER and some urgent care visits.
Emergency Care
When a child feels unwell "in the moment" - during cold and flu season, for example - parents immediately think to call their pediatrician. But what if your child is struggling with a more complex or chronic problem? For these types of visits, it may feel as if a specialist, urgent care, or even an emergency room is the better place to go. However, your pediatrician is actually the best place to go for non-emergency care.

Dr. Shirley L Christian, FAAP, is a board certified pediatric physician who began practicing at the Ashburn Village office of Capital Area Pediatrics (now relocated to Ashburn at Ryan Park in 2003). Dr. Christian completed her pediatric residency at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children in 2002. Prior to that, she graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia in 1999. Dr. Christian's special interests are infectious diseases and newborn care. In 2002, she was named Resident of the Year by the Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children. Dr. Christian enjoys travel, reading and spending time with her family, especially her two sons!

Our team understands that asthma attacks can be prevented if patients are taught to avoid their asthma triggers, use long-term daily control medicines, and use their quick-relief medications in the event of an asthma attack. We are dedicated to providing resources and information to families adjusting to an asthma diagnosis. As a child grows, doctors and parents are watching closely to make sure they hit their developmental milestones. All missed milestones are important, but some are more serious than others. Some missed milestones can be an isolated delay, often easily addressed with targeted therapy. Other complex medical problems or genetic conditions are associated with developmental delays that can be anticipated and addressed. A constellation of specific delayed milestones may indicate a diagnosis of autism: a serious developmental disorder that impairs a child's ability to communicate and interact with others.

With this prevalence in mind, monitoring for signs that a child is struggling academically is extremely important. Headaches are one of the most common sources of discomfort among both adults and children. When children struggle with chronic headaches, it's important to identify their cause. Infections, stress or anxiety, poor sleep, and even head trauma may be to blame for the discomfort. If your child experiences frequent headaches, contact your doctor for an examination. Depending on the source of the headaches, your doctor may recommend pain relievers, dietary changes, stress management techniques, and other treatment plans. We can also provide a referral to a specific headache clinic or neurologist that offers specialized care, and will address your child’s needs based upon our initial intake and plan.

Eczema is a medical condition in which patches of skin become rough and inflamed. About 1 out of every 10 kids will develop eczema. While this skin condition does not appear to be preventable, it's known that certain triggers can make it worse. Therefore, it's important to meet with your pediatrician to discuss how to manage and prevent flare-ups of the condition. This meeting will also allow your doctor to conduct an examination, review a child's medical history, and confirm an eczema diagnosis. Following confirmation, your doctor can prescribe an appropriate treatment, as well as identify potential triggers.

Sports physicals are important because they ensure that your child is healthy enough to participate in the sport of their choice. These specialized exams can help uncover current health problems that you and your child need to address prior to participating in their favorite sports. It can also help reveal potential health problems that could affect your child in the future - allowing your care team to establish solutions for preventative care.

Unfortunately, a PPE does not eliminate the risk of injury on the field. Sports injuries are the second leading cause of emergency room visits for children and adolescents, and the second leading cause of injuries in school. Common acute sports injuries include shoulder dislocations, fractures and sprains, concussions, and meniscus tears. Athletic children can also suffer from overuse injuries such as tennis elbow or little league shoulder, especially during growth spurts.
