Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration – is caused by the deterioration of the central portion of the retina, the inside back layer of the eye that records the images we see and sends them via the optic nerve from the eye to the brain. The retina’s central portion, known as the macula, is responsible for focusing central vision in the eye, and it controls our ability to read, drive a car, recognize faces or colors, and see objects in full detail.
Cataracts
Cataracts: Over fifty percent of people over the age of 60 (and quite a few younger than that) develop cataracts. Almost everyone will eventually develop cataracts as they grow older. Cataract formation occurs at different rates in different people,and can affect one or in most cases both eyes. A cataract is a progressive clouding of the eye’s natural lens. It interferes with light passing through the eye to the back of the eye, the retina. Aging and other factors cause cells in the eye’s lens to become “crowded”,forming these cloudy areas. Early changes may not disturb vision, but over time cataracts typically result in blurred or fuzzy vision and sensitivity to light. People with advanced cataracts often say they feel as if they’re looking through a waterfall or a piece of wax paper.
Cataract Surgery
Treating cataracts: Currently there is no medical treatment to reverse or prevent the development of cataracts. Once they form, the only one way to achieve clear vision again is through cataract surgery.
Eye Exam
In addition to eliminating redness and soreness, treatment can prevent potential infection and scarring of the cornea. Your doctor will perform a complete eye examination to determine the most effective treatment.

Internal Medicine
Dr. Stathos and his family reside in Staunton, Virginia. A graduate of the University of Virginia School of Medicine, he has practiced General Ophthalmology in the Shenandoah Valley for more than 30 years. He has experience and training in a vast array of ocular lid conditions, including but not limited to: Cataract, Glaucoma, Diabetes, Macular Degeneration, and Refractive Surgery. Born in Richmond, VA, Dr. Stathos has since lived throughout the Southeast. He attended Washington University in St Louis, MO, where he received his BA. Four years later he returned to Virginia to study medicine at the University of Virginia, receiving his MD in 1977. From there it was on to the University of Kentucky in Lexington for a one-year internship in Internal Medicine and then back to the University of Virginia for his Residency in Ophthalmology. He now serves as a Clinical Associate Professor in Ophthalmology, working with UVA residents from time to time. Dr. Stathos and his family attend Trinity Episcopal Church in Staunton. In his free time he loves to go biking and is a member of the Lions Club.
