The American Bureau of Shipping, also known as ABS, is a public agency engaged in the development and verification of standards for to the design, construction and operational maintenance of marine-related facilities. Founded in 1862, ABS is a nonprofit corporation that operates a support network of more than 200 representative offices in over 60 countries worldwide. It is involved in the classification and analysis of merchant ships and marine structures. The corporation formulates regulatory standards and guides for vessels, containers and marine equipment. Additionally, it is responsible for the surveying and reviewing of ship damage, repairs and modifications.
