I own an auto repair shop. I ordered an engine from South Houston engine. Initially I was told the core charge was $1200 but when I ordered the engine they insisted it was $1500. The engine I received was top notch, proffesionaly built and worked fantastic. However, When I sent the core back, I did not get the core charge refunded in a few days. I called and was told it would take 5-10 business days to process the refund. After 12 BUSINESS DAYS I called and was told it MIGHT be there on the 13th business day. I find this very unacceptable. $1500 is a lot of money for a small shop to tie up until whenever they decide to refund it...
Overall, I may buy from them again because of the good prices, but with the core issues, I may not .........
Additionally, once the core charge was refunded it was short $400. I called and was told the crankshaft was not a usable core therefore the charge. I knew it had a bad crank, that's why I bought a reman! If I had known in advance they would piece out the core charges then I would have been able to charge the customer for the $400. Instead, I had to pay the charge therefore taking $400 out of my margin. Horrible customer service in my opinion.

DO NOT go here they are selling used engines as re-maunufactured and if you find out all they can say is they never have a problem with their engines it is the installers fault. This engine looked at by 3 different mechanics all have the opinion that it was a high mileage block cleaned up and sold as re-maunufactured. This engine is very badly worn to the point that the block is not even buildable. If you use this company you will be really sorry

Engine lasted 400 Miles. Main Bearing Failure. Warranty denied because we requested labor and they did not want to pay it. JD said he would gladly give us a engine had we not wanted labor but due to the labor claim he was not. Now the engine had lack of lubrication. So if you don't want money for your time they cover it but otherwise no. We purchased all necessary parts and provided them with documents required for warranty.We replace parts from ford- Ford Engine oil cooler, High pressure pump, Injectors, Ect.. and They provided Low Pressure Oil Pump. We have had the engine inspected at another machine shop and they said main bearing failure caused by not using a engine block that had previously spun a main bearing. ALL other bearings were in good shape and a lack of lubrication would cause all bearing wear/failure not just main bearings. Also main bearings are the first to receive lubrication so they would be the least damaged if it was lack of lubrication not just mains. This is the second dealing with them like this for our customers and will not recommend or install any of product from them. DON"T WASTE YOUR MONEY

Rebuilt was the way to go! Thank you South Houston Engine for taking the time to answer all of my questions and getting my engine ready quickly. Very pleased and will definitely recommend you to everyone....just passed 4500 miles on my rebuilt engine, drives like new.

Terrible experience I would recommend going to another engine builder…I contracted South Houston Engine to machine my engine and provide new pistons, rings, bearings and freeze plugs in the freshly machined block and revitalize my heads. They came in with and extremely low budget, well that budget was shot once I picked up the engine and realized they gave my piece of garbage cast pistons. I had explained to them multiple times prior to the build that forged pistons were required with my application. Needless to say my budget was raised by almost $500.00 and a week later I was on may to rebuilding the engine with my new pistons and press fit connecting rods. I was told by them when I picked up the pistons that the rings were not file fit, but when I test fit the rings they were incorrectly sized. I proceeded to file fit every ring in the entire engine assembly.

Next issue 4 out of the 8 (#’s 2, 4, 7, 8) connecting rods were installed backwards on the pistons. This may seem like no big deal but they are press fit connecting rods so I have to heat up connecting rod and slide or press out the piston sleeve and reset the rod in the opposite direction. Unfortunately I had to find this out the hard way, once I got all my pistons installed in the block I noticed that the chamfered side of 4 of the connecting rods were on the inside not against the crankshaft journals and I could hardly rotate the crankshaft with the rod caps finger tight. Of course I had to fix this by re-press fitting my rods myself.

Next issue was the main cap bolts were all scattered, meaning I brought in each main cap with the bolt that came out of it…bolted into the block. It is pretty common that these bolts should go back in their original place and since they are not torque to yield bolts they can be reused. Well again i had to find out the hard way that they mixed them all up. When I installed the oil pump the stud that holds the oil pick up in place, was installed on the wrong main cap. Now I probably should have noticed this earlier, but I just assumed that they would have kept each bolt in its original hole.

My experience with South Houston Engine was sub-par to say the least. They seem like nice enough guys but I question the professionalism they have working in their machine shop. The thing that gets me the most is, I am rebuilding the engine myself so am finding out all these issues and fixing them, but if I had them rebuild I would not find the issues until something catastrophic happened.

great service, great turnaround, would recommend

This company was so nice to us. They picked up my engine from Alabama, shipped it to their shop and repaired and rebuilt it. They put in all new gaskets, pistons and valve train. They also advised me to get new injectors, which I did. They didn't install my engine but they shipped it to my repair shop that I contracted out and I do believe my engine runs better than it has in a really long time. I was treated with kindness and more information than I thought to ask for. I would definitely refer this company for any of you in the states that need a diesel engine remanufactured. Thank you to a great staff at South Houston Engine Service. ( I purchased my 6.6 Duramax just over 2 years ago with no problems to date) I even had my neighbor call them up last week and he purchased a 7.3 Powerstroke from them and it is being shipped this week they tell us.
