To bad a rating is required. But I guess I can add a minus in front of the one star I gave this place.
On monday jan 9th 2017 our family dog got away from us. We left our garage door open far enough so he could get back in but he never returned.
We called the humane society and they told us he was there. We were told a neighbor caught him (this is nearly impossible, he is very fast) and called animal control and told them we continuously allow our dog to run "at large". We do not know our neighbors or they us so I don't understand their vendetta against us.
He has gotten away from us a few times in the past but as far as allowing him to run "at large" this is an outright lie!!
If we were guilty of letting him roam and not caring where he is why would we pay
$119.00 (by the way we were initially told the fee is $92.00 if we picked him up that day. After that day it went up to $119.00 because they would give him shots without our consent or knowledge by the way. We were there that day and for some unknown reason the fee was still $119.00.)
When we got to the humane society to pick him up we were not allowed to see him to make sure we were picking up our dog. Now we can see why you don't let anyone back in your animal jail. Everything is in fair condition up front but your animal jail is atrocious! Maybe the state should be called to report you for animal cruelty. There should really be a sign on that door that says "inhumane area"
Now on to the employees attitudes.
As I write this I'm pretty sure none of you like your jobs. Never have we ever witnessed such rude, incompetant, discourteous, disrespectfull "people".
You are beyond pathetic not to mention liars!!
You told us he didn't have a collar on him when he was brought in. Why then was his collar on your desk?? Caught you in another lie. Our dog always has his collar on!!
Next time maybe you should get your story straight instead of whispering to each other like grade school children!
This place is terrible!! The employees should be fired and this place should be shut down!
We are sure you all go home at night with some perverted, self satisfaction and dreaming about how you can continue torturing animals and being assholes to the public!!
Shame on all of you!!

Staff except for Holly is a totally rude!!! It's like they don't want to help animals get adopted by loving people. Went to see a dog that I fell in love with after seeing him online and they wouldn't even let me visit him due to a minor mistake on my application process. This is the first time I ever have adopted and wasn't sure about the process. Well let me tell you they didn't make it any easier. Wow. That's the end of my support and donations of any kind to them. JERKS!!!

Upset is all I can say. Saw a cat online said it was $30.00 to adopt. Watched video and fell in love with the cat. Me my husband and 9 year old went to get him. Got there and the staff was rude and found out he was $70.00, they didn't even want to try to negotiate with us. Sad that they don't want to see the animals get adopted. Now we are all sad and my daughter is broken hearted. Never going to adopt from there.

Disgusted. The kittens didn't have any toys to play with. Which is unacceptable. Cats need to play. Also everyone that works there is always very rude. They don't care at all about the pets.

Staff is a joke

If you want to adopt an animal be sure your the only one interested in the animal. Staff has a bit of a "god complex" and they make their decision even before they interview you.

I wanted to adopt a dog similar to the dog I already have. The girl during the meet and greet was very rude and stern! My dog loves other animals and she tried to say they weren't interacting which was not true! They were calm together and smelling the areas, that's what dogs do! There was another family wanting to see the same dog but I was there first and I was alone, but the girl already decided before she even did the meet with the other family that she wanted them to take the dog! Why is it her decision? She's not an expert! This was not fair to me and I will NEVER go there to adopt a dog again! I can't believe I was treated so unfairly trying to adopt a dog and give him a good home! If you go there, avoid Chonteaul Dean she thinks she is high and mighty but she's just rude!

The animals live in decent conditions, as in their kennels, due to the great work of the inmates! I have a problem with their attentiveness to the animals: I had been visiting dogs and a overweight Chesapeake dog named Penny. She came in after a big walk huffin and puffin. Workers walked by with her water bowl dry and payed no attention. I went to the desk to have it done and they addressed it over the intercom. I went back to check on the dog few minutes, nothing. Went back again 10 minutes later, saw a worker walk by, nothing. 15 minutes, this dog is beginning to sound horse from huffin so hard and being dehydrated.. So I took the liberty and did it myself. I was so ticked.

Also the animals rarely are groomed, I don't know how many dogs or cats I've pet that either have do poopy paws or urine stained fur.

The customer service is not the greatest either, most of the staff acts high and mighty and is very rude when asking questions. They act like they don't know what animal your talking about when you ask to adopt. Don't even recognize them. The inmates, however, are great!!! They are the ones who truly work with the dogs and really know them well. They know their stories, personalities and all their names! Truly great people to interact with! The inmates and the animals deserve the star for this rating.

Save and adopt these poor animals!

Horrible Experience

We adopted a puppy that we had viewed and spent time with twice. We were a little apprehensive because each time we visited this puppy we got a different story about him. When we got him home he had bone/dog aggression we called the SFHS we thought maybe if we got him neutered he would get better. It didn't and has not so i call them again (i have talked to them about 5 times now) they were very rude and refused to do anything even tho we have put almost $1000 in to this dog. They say that it is past the 7 days even thought we called the first time with in the 7 days. (we wanted to give him a chance and not have them put him to sleep) They take no responsibility even thought they said he was tested for aggression and fine with other dogs. They just keep telling us that he was a stray but yet the have talked to the previous owner and have his information. It has been nothing but lies and attitude from the staff such as us being told that he was there a month no wait 2 weeks to well he's on a stray hold this throughout a 2 week period of us considering him as a part of our family. To use it is all about the animals when it comes to shelters this is why we donate to this organization. However now i have a daughter that is in love with a dog that could cause harm on her (SFHS says that it says in his paper work good with kids it also said good with dogs and no aggression) and we are stuck in a position to bring him back knowing that he will be put to sleep when if they would have taken the time to correctly evaluate this puppy he could have been in a wonderful home with no other animals. I can honestly say that I will never deal with the SFHS again nor will I ever recommend them to anyone. I think the city of Sioux Falls needs to hold higher standards for the shelters when it comes to evaluations and that this particular shelter needs to be investigated to see how many more people there are going through the same issue that we are. No wonder why i have heard so much negative about the SFHS. To bad I had to experience it to believe it.

this shelter is the best i have ever seen!

all of the workers seem to know the animals individually and they are all very friendly there! all of the animals are taken awesome care of and they are treated well!!! all the dogs get to be walked at least once a day so they can get some energy out! this would be a awesome shelter to adopt your forever family friend!!!-
