All it takes is a little preparation to get your car winter-ready and to keep from getting into an icy situation.
It’s time to bring long sleeves and long pants out of storage, prep your home and car, and contact the cool weather home/yard contractors.
I went to BJ's Automotive for a Winter checkup because I will be taking my kids up to the mountains for a ski trip. I had a feeling that my brakes might have an issue because they felt a little odd. Also, the day before I took my car in my engine light came on. I found out on the web that with my 2001 Dodge Durango I could turn my ignition switch on 3 times and it would give me the error code that my engine warning light was triggering on. I thought that this would be a good test of if a shop was being honest. I just moved into Simi Valley and didn't know an honest repair shop. The error code was P0442. A minor emissions type problem. After bringing my car into the shop they did a full inspection for $79 which included an oil change and wiperblade replacement. They also saw my engine light on and diagnosed it correctly and notified me of the problem being a small emissions leak. I was told that this should be corrected because if there were a more significant engine problem I would not become aware of it because it was already triggered. Right on!!! But, what was significant was that I was told that more important, my break pads were low - 35% on one side and 15% on the other - and that this was more important to take care of (I know they meant if I was having to make a financial decision-it's a week before Christmas). I hesitated because this is the first time I was at this shop. The cost was going to be about $250-$350 because my rotors were going to have to be turned or maybe replaced. So I initially declined knowing that I can replace breaks and rotors myself..so I called Auto Zone. Ceramic Brakes ( I don't buy semi-metallic) were going to run me $70. Rotors were going to cost $60 each and they were not going to be OEM (Original Equipment Manufacture) - I think the rotors were coming from China. Also, I was going to have to do the work, and though I know how to work on cars, I've been out of it for quite a while. So I immediately called BJ Automotive back and asked them to fix my brakes. They started work right away. I must say that I was also concerned about my ABS (Anti-lock Brake System). I had an experience where I slammed on the brakes and it just seemed WAY too long to slow down, but I thought that maybe it was just me because ABS can kind of feel that way. Turns out, they found an issue with one of the calipers being really dirty and clogged and instead of saying that I needed to replace them that they would try and clean them if possible. They completed the job successfully, but recommended that I come back within 1000 miles to make sure that my brakes were still behaving properly. I have been driving for 26 years.... wow I'm old :o) ... I am an AAA member and this truly was the BEST experience I've had with anyone repairing my vehicle ---- HANDS DOWN!! I will and have already recommended them to people I know. I will be going back to BJ's Automotive. BJ's Automotive..... From me, and my kids....Thank you!!! I was first recommend to go to Bill's Quality Auto Care by America's Tire. My Toyota needed an alignment after getting my bald tires replaced. Joe greeted me with a smile and I was instantly drawn in by his warm personality. As I waited in the office, I got to see how the whole operation worked. All of the counter guys had the same, helpful qualities. They greeted people at the door and answered the phone very professionally. They took notes and asked a lot of questions to find out exactly what was going on with the cars they were bringing in. I was sold when 2 of the guys helped an older lady get her scooter in the back of her van. They treated everyone like rock stars!! I left the shop knowing that my alignment and tire wear problem was fixed. About a week later, I received a thank you letter and a coupon for future services. Joe even called me to make sure everything was OK with my Toyota. I felt like I was their best customer, even though I had only been there one time. I am happy to say that I have finally found a mechanic that I like and that I can trust.
Tim Peterson has been my Honda mechanic for over 20 years, HE IS WORTH HIS WEIGHT IN GOLD. I trust no one else except Peterson Repair for the care of my Hondas. In fact, as long as Peterson Repair exists, I will buy no other brand of car. Tim does honest work, and never pushes to have procedures done which aren’t necessary or yet due. His prices are extremely fair, and his estimates are right on the money. As a woman, I appreciate the respect with which he speaks to me. He speaks in a very calm manner, patiently explains and shows me why a certain part needs to be replaced. When he sees some wear on another part, he will tell me that it will need to be replaced at the next service, but that there is still some mileage to be had on it. He keeps an eye on the tires, even though he doesn’t sell tires, and tells me when he sees too much wear. You will never find a better man to take care of your Honda!
Best repair shop in town without a doubt! Takes care of all of our cars, which are all different makes and models, and without fail they have always been consistently honest and reliable with ever repair. My step father was in the car business so all of our vehicles were always kept in superior shape however once he passed away, we were left wondering who was going to take care of our cars. After getting completely ripped off at another automotive shop on the west side of Simi, we found out about Shortees Automotive & Performance through a friend and honestly for that connection, we are forever grateful. Great people, superior service, and reliable repairs.

Fantastic!!!! Did the entire front end on my 4wd suburban, and 4 new shocks. I can drive with no hands again. Fully feels like a brand new car again. To boot, a week later my A/C pump went kaput. These guys did me up right, replacing all the right new parts and freon charge. Not easy jobs for sure, but they did it absolutely right and had very competitive pricing. What matters most though is the work quality. Top notch attention to service at the highest standards,.. I mean, I won't have to go back there until I need something else done, and that's where I'm going to go. Brett
Tim Peterson has been repairing my Hondas since I arrived in Simi Valley in 1994. Throughout these 20 years, Tim has helped me keep my vehicles in top shape. He stays on top of the basic maintenance. He alerts me to potential service and repair needs. He gives me the options and lets me choose without pressure. His work has been dependable and his prices fair. One of the reasons I keep buying Hondas is because I have Tim as a mechanic. I recommend him wholeheartedly and without reservation.
Best place for a oil change. They also check your car over for free. They tell you what's wrong or not and do not pressure into it but are very truthful. They show you what's wrong visually too. They also have the best price I found and even fixed my trunk for free while they were doing my oil change! Awesome service overall. No complaints. That's something big to say about a auto shop. Haha.
This shop was amazing. Ace gave me the "Out the door" cost, which I liked. I hate those other shops that don't tell you the total cost until the work is done. He even suggested that I go online and print out a $15 discount before heading to his shop. Who does that? You want a great smog test price and honest service, go here. You won't regret it. This is my shop from now on.
When I got my first Honda I asked several people who they went to for service. 3 out of 5 people said Peterson and were very happy. After two Hondas I have never regretted listening to them. He's fair, dependable, honest and knows what he's doing. As a woman I never felt talked down to. I am contemplating getting another Honda just so I can keep my mechanic.
There are more than 700,000 auto service technicians and mechanics in the U.S. Finding the right one to repair a dent in your car door or fix an engine that won't start can be overwhelming, especially when it's an emergency. Review a few important facts about auto repair professionals and what you can do to get the best possible mechanic working on your vehicle's issues for a fair price.
Looking For Reliability
Unlike home repair services that evaluate a property, meet with homeowners and have time to prepare before their physical work begins, auto repair businesses are often asked to make fixes on the spot. If you come into a garage with a tire issue, the expectation is the mechanic will know how to correct that problem quickly.
That is why reliability is so vital when searching for a trusted auto repair shop. It may take going to several different mechanics before you find one you are truly comfortable with. Pose questions to this professional to find out what approach they will take to repair your car or what alternatives are available. Shopping around also gives you the best opportunity to find the cheapest rate or the fastest service, as some garages may be backed up with other vehicles that need repair first.
A recommended way to locate a trustworthy auto repair professional is to seek out customer reviews. Online sites offer honest opinions from real customers who have used a business. Read through this feedback to learn how a business operates and what you can expect if you were to take your vehicle there. Look for reviews about how quick maintenance was completed and if prices were fair. By learning what other people have said about a garage, you can gain a better idea if it's the right place to go when you have a car problem in need of fixing.
It can be difficult to know which automotive problems are serious enough to require expert assistance. A ripped seat cushion or broken radio don't involve safety and will not warrant enough of a problem that going into a garage is required. However, setbacks with brakes, lights and other parts that are vital to the safety of your car's driver and passengers, as well as others on the road, necessitate quick fixes. Many modern automobiles will notify drivers of an issue, in the form of a signal on the dashboard or a noise within the vehicle.
In the event of an accident, even if your vehicle does not appear to have any damage on the outside, it is generally recommended that you see a trusted auto repair professional. Internal damage may have occurred, or an important part may have been knocked out of place. Fixing these issues before driving much further can prevent further vehicle breakdowns in the future. In the case of a serious accident, a body shop can assess the problems and determine the best course of action for repairs, as well as evaluate how much they will cost.
Beyond that, regular checkups are recommended. Tires must be rotated, fluids needs to be replaced and the engine must be evaluated. After driving 25,000 miles, most auto dealers suggest having the vehicle checked out to ensure everything is running smoothly. Taking the car into the auto repair professional you trust will protect you from further problems down the road.
Not every type of auto repair work needs to be done by a certified mechanic. You can fix some of a vehicle's issues just by paying attention to how the automobile is running and having a basic understanding of auto repair. Look over the ways weather may impact your car and what preventative measures you can take to avoid having to take it into the shop. At the same time, be aware of mechanic scams that can impact your experience.
Preventing Trips To The Professional
Some fixes to your car can be done without paying a specialist. Issues like replacing oil and air filters are relatively simple, with instructions provided in the owner's manual on how to make these changes. The same goes for replacing broken windshield wipers or burnt-out headlights. Such issues should be repaired quickly to guarantee safety, but don't require a visit to a garage. By handling these types of tasks on your own, you'll gain a better understanding for how your car operates and save time and money.
Along with understanding how to fix manageable vehicle issues that may arise, taking preventative measures to avoid future problems is a valuable time saver. Many problem-solving best practices are related to the seasons. Your vehicle will be in different conditions in the winter than in the summer, meaning it requires a different type of preparation.
In the spring and summer, you want to be sure your air conditioner and cooling systems work correctly. Given the high temperatures the vehicle will be exposed to, overheating is a common problem. Look over the system by ensuring there is enough coolant available. If it needs to be refilled, it is best to open the hood and add more to the car before it gets too warm out. Also, clean out fan ducts and other ventilation sources necessary for summertime driving.
For winter driving, features such as the defroster, heater and exhaust system are paramount. Look in your owner's manual for specific directions on how features should be checked and repaired. Many newer cars have a cabin air filter that can be replaced when needed, allowing warm air to continue to flow in. Also, check your tires before winter driving, as they need to be at the proper pressure to perform well on snow and ice.
There is a common worry among many people that auto repair professionals take advantage of the general public. Because so many people are unaware of how to fix the problems in their vehicle, they are nervous of being overcharged by mechanics or worried that the improper work is being done.
While the great majority of professionals in the industry are honest, hard-working people, a few bad apples can ruin everything. You should be extra careful when first visiting a mechanic to guarantee that the price you're charged and maintenance the vehicle receives are fair.
Among the common scams pulled are needless repairs, where a garage charges you for work that isn't necessary. Another popular one is attracting customers through a cheap oil change or tire pressure check. Then, when you are in the shop and your car is being repaired, they give you a long list of other corrections they'd like to make, therefore boosting the total cost of your bill.
The best way to combat these types of problems is getting a written estimate before work is done. That way, you can see how much repairs are expected to cost. If the final bill is higher than the estimate projected, ask to specifically see the work. Make sure information is put in writing as well. If a problem remains, you can have proof that work was not done to your satisfaction.
By working closely with an auto repair professional and doing some of the tune-up work on your own, you will be less likely to fall for these scams. At the same time, you'll be able to drive out with a clean and healthy vehicle, thanks to the repairs made by a trained professional.
