Ultrasound
Diagnostic imaging employs different technologies to create visual representations of the interior of the body for diagnosis and treatment of disease and other health issues. Although everyone knows the original form of diagnostic imaging — the x-ray — today x-rays have been joined by CT scans, MRIs, PET scans, ultrasound, and other technologies to make a huge impact on diagnostic ability.
MRI
Medical ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves that are reflected by tissue to varying degrees. While ultrasound doesn’t provide the anatomical detail of CT or MRI, it can show moving structures in real time. Although associated with imaging of the fetus in pregnant women, ultrasound also is used for imaging of the abdominal organs, heart, breast, muscles, tendons, arteries, and veins.

The Diagnostic Imaging Department of Summit Healthcare offers state-of-the-art diagnostic services. Our team includes licensed x-ray technologists, certified CT technologists, and board certified Mammography technologists and radiologists. Our expert staff complements the comprehensive imaging technology, ensuring excellent patient care and treatment. We are the regional referral center for Northeastern Arizona. Our department is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Providing quality patient care is the primary focus of what we do.
Computed Tomography
CT scans use a combination of x-rays and a computer to create pictures of your organs, bones, and other tissues. CT scans show more detail than a regular x-ray. In a CT scan a narrow x-ray beam circles around the area being targeted, providing a series of images from many different angles. The computer then uses this information to create a cross-sectional picture. A number of these “slices” are produced and the computer stacks the scans to create a three-dimensional image. CT scans can give an excellent view of organs, bones, and blood vessels.

Joint Replacement
Total joint replacement is a surgical procedure in which parts of an arthritic or damaged joint are removed and replaced with a metal, plastic or ceramic device called a prosthesis. The prosthesis is designed to replicate the movement of a normal, healthy joint. Hip and knee replacements are the most commonly performed joint replacements, although replacement surgery can be performed on other joints, as well, including the ankle, wrist, shoulder, and elbow.

Dr. Ellsworth received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Midwestern University in Glendale, AZ. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, MO.

In total knee replacement surgery, also known as knee arthroplasty, the damaged bone and cartilage from the patient’s shinbone, thighbone, and kneecap are cut away. An artificial joint made from metal alloys, high-grade plastics, and polymers replaces the removed areas. Now the knee can move and function again without pain.

Dr. Cornelsen received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Des Moines University, College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery. He completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Millcreek Hospital in Erie, PA. Dr. Cornelsen finished his Fellowship in Orthopedic Sports Medicine at the Minnesota Orthopedic Sports Medicine Institute in Golden Valley, MN.
Physical Therapy
Orthopedic rehabilitation is a personalized post-treatment program that focuses on the specific improvements a patient needs to achieve. For example, physical therapy services during orthopedic rehabilitation can expedite healing after surgery and restore an adequate range of motion to an injured joint.
Manual Therapy
Physical therapy is an area of healthcare in which the focus is on the evaluation and treatment of various physical limitations. Services provided by a licensed physical therapist revolve around improving functional mobility after an injury. This may be accomplished using specific rehabilitative exercise, manual therapy, and numerous different modalities.
