There has been a disturbing new trend in the HVAC industry called flat rate pricing. This is often advertised via statements such as no hourly charges or pay by the job, not by the hour. Sound attractive? Think again. This business practice uses what is colloquially known as book time which means however long it says in the book is how long they charge for except the book times are almost always significantly longer than the job actually takes. Auto mechanics have used this type of billing practice for many years. This allows technicians to create 12-16 billable hours in a typical 8 hour work day. And the customer is the one who ends up paying for it.
We believe in only charging the customers for what they get. We arent interested in charging somebody for 4 hours through a flat rate system when the job only takes an hour and a half. It isnt good for business, it isnt good for our customer and it certainly isnt good for our reputation.

We've used Carswell Heating and Sheet Metal for many years on various projects and they have always been friendly, personable and reasonably priced. Last week we had them replace a furnace in our rental property in Pacific Grove and, like usual, everyhing went smoothly. Thanks guys!
We used Carswell Heating to install a heating system in a new house we built. That was biggest mistake we made. Carswell is a very smooth talker, but when it comes to the quality of his work, the timeliness of his work, and his responsiveness he is absolutely the worst. Once he has a contract to do work for you and your money, forget about him returning calls or text messages. Moreover, he will promise anything you want to hear, but what he delivers is completely different from what he promises. And, his work is sloppy and substandard. For example, at his suggestion, we had him remove our existing electronic air filter and replace it with a Lennox Merv 16 filter. However, he failed to seal around the new filter, so we had unfiltered air blowing all sorts of dust and dirt throughout our house, and we have to have our ducts cleaned. When he came back to seal around the filter, he had audacity to insist that we pay him for what he should have done in the beginning. We were also supposed to get a humidistat in our house to control the dehumidifier. Of course, Carswell did not know the anything about the equipment he was installing, so he installed a dehumidifier that requires a service call whenever we want the humidity level changed--he gave himself a nice built-in income at our expense. He also tried to install a gas fireplace for us. He sent his kids to do the job, but they were clueless, other than charging $95.00 per hour each. After charging a multiple of what the job should have cost, our fireplace still does not work. Our advice is: If you hear the name Carswell, run the other way. We would not use Carswell to change a simple air filter, let alone install a furnace. He is the worst of the worst.
