Staying organized on moving day is key, and planning is a big part of it. Keep this checklist handy before and during your move to keep things stress-free.
Moving takes a lot of planning, and that includes knowing what your moving rights are. Read on to find more about your moving rights and what you can do to prepare.
We've put together a small list to get you started on your journey -- and the first step starts with a single box.
I have a lot of questions regarding moving. I am a super detailed person and I apply it on my everyday life. A week ago, for the first time I need to move out of Texas, I was been picked by my employer to handle the new branch of brand distribution company in Salt Lake City. This is a one time oppurtunity that I need to grab on eventhough I don't want to leave my hometown. I nedd to move to Utah with my wife and 2 young children. I found one company that fits all my requirements. The quality, professionalism and price(i searched online and saw some good testimonials), 24 hours moving inc is the company to mention. I called them and asked in details evrything about how they move. the operator even checked the address location to make sure that she can inform me if an additional charge will be incurred (like extra flight of stairs, place where semi won't fit and they need to haul a smaller truck). Luckily our house is one story and is close to the road. After a long talk, we finally agreed with a good price. The movers arrived on time and did a great job at getting everything loaded pretty quickly. We thought it would take longer but we were able to leave earlier than expected. They were a little bit earlier when they delivered. We are still an hour away from the new house when they arrived. I gave them a go to start unloading since I gave them an extra key(just in case). When we arrived they were halfway done. Fast and accurate I may say. I don't think we will be moving again any time soon, but will definitely use the company again, mostly because timing is everything and they were keeping up with our schedule to a higher level.
AAA Moving Solutions is the best moving company in Dallas! The initial conversation with Bob the scheduler was very pleasant. I have had some bad experiences with previously used companies and I was hesitant to go with a company just because I received a flyer on my door. Bob assured me that the staff at AAA was a great group of guys and gals and that if I chose to move with them I would be impressed. Based off the initial conversation with Bob and the wonderful and discounted rate on my flyer I chose to move with them. Best decision ever! The day before our move I heard from my very own relocation specialist, Nick, who checked that nothing had changed from the original plan and indicated what time I was scheduled and what time they would arrive. Nick and Pete arrived 15 minutes early, but we're patient enough to wait for me to finish getting my kids up before beginning the move. The guys gotten straight to work, first running all the boxes and small items out of the truck and then they started with the furniture. They use some sort of plastic wrap to wrap everything with pad and I was just amazed as my kids and how efficient they were in doing so. It took about two and a half hours to get it fully furnished 2 bedroom apartment from the second floor onto the truck period after a brief 20-minute Drive they took payment and started unloading and let me say I was expecting to charge that would exceed the estimated price but the bill was about $75 less!. Amazing guys with great personalities and a tremendous work ethic! I will never go with another moving company again Triple-A will be my moving company for years to come!
Hired Allways Moving and got awesome service. We hired allways moving and storage to move us from Arizona to Indiana just for 3 weeks ago end of July and got 5 star moving services. Movers are honest, professional trained up and hard working. They proved their professionalism with great success. It was our first move with allways. My friend Jack's recommendation we hired allways and got their awesome service. From start to finish they maintained excellent tactics to give us a damage free move. Ben offered us very reasonable price with on time service. He ensured us they would have finished the move before our schedule time. They kept their words it was completed within in 4 days though we agreed to finish 4-5 days. Movers Liz, Nick and Paul came on time and started the moving procedure accordingly our moving plan. They wrapped, packed and moved. The driver was also skilled and trained up person who drove the mighty Allways truck with great care. They did great team work service to finish our move exactly what we expected from them. The cost was only $4380 which was lower than our expectation. It was totally damage free moving experience, did great job allways moving. We would definitely refer to use this excellent moving company for your next move. Thank you Allways!
Looking for a moving company that can give you a good service backed up with fair price, I do think 24 hours movign inc is the best company for you. From the talk to a representative you will know they are very professional. We gave the source and destination location during the inquiry and they searched it by map to see the actual location. The source location is a one floor house, so no problem with charges, but the destination condo is in the second floor. Extra charges for stairs was estimated to be incurred. Although we've been charged extra they are still the better in pricing compared to others. The driver picking up my items asked me if its okay to arrive thirty minutes earlier. That's unusual for me, but its better for me, so they end up earlier. They even helped to pack the last few items that I hadn't finished before they arrived. The same guys unloaded all mythings and even after a long day they still had smiles on their faces. They worked hard and did an amazing job. The best part was the price inthe end was pretty close to what they originally estimated even with additional boxes and table. Good company, good move and good service allaround!
I have dealt with many moving companies in the past, some many worse than others. I just recently did a local move with Great American Moving & Storage in Texas, I can say that is the best company I could ever hire and had an amazing experience with this company. As with life in general, and with most moves, problems or complications arise...and of course with this move in particular. However, this is where Great American’s shine above the rest. Despite the complications, everything was resolved professionally and all promises were kept. On a side note, the "extra charges" that people are complaining about is not the fault of the company. The cost of business is expensive and they bill by the cubic foot...basically how much space you take up in their van. The problem is that the customers "add" items that are not on the original estimate, take up more cubic feet, and therefore drive up the cost of doing business. These guys didn't come cheap. They are NOT budget movers....but you will really see the difference in the customer service and personal attention. There is no trickery here....just be VERY specific on what's going and what's staying.
Let me start this off by saying I usually move long distance every 2 or 3 years for work. I don’t usually try out moving companies that I’m not personally acquainted with, but when I found out that I needed to move my large 1 bedroom from Dallas to Chicago within a week and a half, my friend James recommended Speedy Movers to me. The quote they gave me was roughly comparable to others I had gotten, but my one major caveat was that I wanted my items to arrive within a week and a half and not to have to wait a long time. At first Rachel (my sales contact) told me she couldn’t guarantee it, but when I made it clear that the window was too long, she was able to quote me a guaranteed delivery date for $500 extra. While it was pricey, I just received my items yesterday, exactly 5 days after my pickup. I’m not sure if Speedy Movers operate out of Chicago, but if you are looking to move by Dallas, and need a fast delivery, definitely check out Speedy Movers and make sure to hear the pricing on their guaranteed delivery option. Rachel was my contact there; I can’t recall the movers’ names, though the foreman had a light Spanish accent.
This was my first time using 24 hours moving and I was very impressed overall. The online quoting system is super easy, they immediately emailed me with a quote and called me to discuss it within just a few hours after I requested a quote. On moving day, the crew was perfectly on time. Manuel gave a walk-through of our home before they got started. They were Fast and padded/hard-wrapped everything carefully. We were moving from a two floor house, they were organized and started with the heavier stuff to stack in the bottom of the truck. They were very experienced since it shows on how they handle everything. They did an excellent job putting things away in a bigger house which most of stuffs were to be placed upstairs during the delivery date. They were fast, careful and hard-workers. The head of the team George was such a good team leader. He professionally lead the movers and assisted on the unpacking as well. The best part was that they worked so quickly that we ended up paying significantly less than the original quote. I would use these guys again. Highly recommended.
Great experience! It was my first moving experience with any movers and got awesome service from the first time. I have obtained a dependable, trustworthy and efficient moving company. It was needed to move urgently from TX to DC and discussed with my father about the reliable moving company. He suggested that it would be better to remain more conscious for avoiding any worse experience. After observing different companies quote, offer, customer reviews and visiting their website very closely, I have selected Allways Moving and Storage as my finest moving company; because Ben confirmed me about their customer servicing policy, professionalism and honesty. They took very competitive price for this long distance moving service including all materials.Professional, reliable and efficient. It was really amazing to work with the crews. They did everything according to our moving plan. They kept their words; it was truly a damage free moving service. Thank you very much AMS. I would definitely use them again and recommend them to all of my well-wisher for their next move.
What do you want when you move from one place to another?...of course have a smooth and hassle free move. Well, i can't do it myself and i need help, so i looked for a moving company. I searched Google and talked to a lot of Companies, but it made me so frustrated. They can't give me a good deal until my co-worker told me about 24 hours moving inc. He moved his mom through this company and everything end up very smooth. Next day i found myself calling the company, Mike is my agent and he is quite impressive salesman. He gave me a good deal and we scheduled pickup. The next day the pick-up guys came in ready to load all my belongings. Its amazing how tight they wrapped my big furniture and my electronic devices plus they stuff it with pads too. The delivery guys came in a week after as per my request, and i am happy this move didn't gave me headaches. I actually forgot that I have left my wallet with money in one of the dresser. The guys are so honest they gave the wallet back with the contents still in tact. That's too rare nowadays. That's why i love this company.
I have so much goosebumps when you say moving. So as much as possible I don't want to move anywhere. I thought I will stay in Denton forever but i found out I am not happy with my job and the company i work with.So after months of looking I found a job out of state that can triple the salary I am currently making. Eventhough I heard terrible stories about moving and really was concerned about those things might happen to me too, i took the risk and I hired 24 hours moving inc. I called them, Sindy is the sweet lady i talked to and she gave me a fair price that covers everything (full service).Came the pickup day and they were so potentially professional, honest fast and courteous people. They did exactly what they said they would. They delivered it on time. Although it took them sometime to find some missing part of one table they finished the job and assembled everything carefully. In my opinion if you have to move long distance then use 24 hours moving inc, so your moving nightmares will become the best move ever. Thank you again for everything.
Every move is different, so it's vital to choose a moving company that's right for you. The first consideration you should make when hiring these professionals is how far you're moving.
Depending on the moving company, local moves are typically anywhere between one and 100 miles within the same state. Local moves are less complicated to plan, both for you and the movers you decide to hire. They're typically priced based on how much you need to move, how many movers the company plans to provide and how long the job is estimated to take.
Long-Distance and Interstate Moves
Even if you're staying in the same state, you may still technically be planning a long-distance move - though the exact mileage varies by moving company, these are typically moves that are more than 50 to 100 miles long or across state or country lines. In fact, even if you're moving within the same state but you have to go through another state or country first, it's likely considered an interstate move, rather than a local one. That's because the movers are technically transferring items between state lines, which means they'll be responsible for having the correct licensing and insurance in place.
Long-distance moves are much more complicated to plan, typically requiring you to pay numerous extra expenses for everything from shipping items to renting storage space.
Are you making a big move and trying to figure out exactly how much you should plan to spend? Or are you on a tight budget and looking to hire a mover who can keep costs low? Either way, it's important to understand how exactly moving companies charge their customers.
As mentioned above, for local moves, companies will charge based on the number of movers they provide and the amount of time they'll need to spend on the project. Generally, the more rooms in your apartment or house, the more movers and time you can expect to be charged for. The price of long-distance or interstate moves, on the other hand, will be based on the amount of belongings you have - and more specifically the weight of those belongings. The heavier the boxes or items you're shipping across state or country lines, the more expensive your move will be.
Moving costs will vary greatly, depending on where you are. Local moves in a small town in the Midwest will be much less expensive than comparable moves in New York City. For that reason, it's best to do some research about the going rates in your area.
No matter what type of move you're making, you can reach out to prospective moving companies for estimates - this is the best way to determine how expensive your move will be based on where you live and what services you're looking for. Typically, the moving company will send someone to your home who will do a walk through of each room, making note of the furniture, valuables and other belongings in each one. Then, he or she will provide an estimate. The exact amount you pay may, however, be different from the amount declared in the estimate. That's where the type of contract comes in.
Nonbinding vs. Binding Contracts
For any move, a company will ask you to sign a contract. It's crucial to know exactly what type of contract you're signing, though, to understand how much you can expect to pay. In basic terms, there are two types of moving contracts: binding and nonbinding. Binding, as well as binding not-to-exceed, contracts are the most preferable for people hiring movers. These list an estimated price the moving company cannot charge more than. So, even if your local move takes an hour longer or your belongings are heavier than expected for an interstate move, you're still only responsible for paying a fixed amount.
Nonbinding contracts, on the other hand, have no fixed final number. Instead, they list a rate - by the hour or by the pound/kilo - and you're responsible for paying exactly how much your move costs in those terms.
Keep in mind that movers provide a variety of services, many of which you may not require. These can affect how expensive your move will be. For example, a full-service move that includes packing and unpacking will be pricier than a local move that only includes loading the truck, driving it to the new home and unloading it.
For any move, there may be extra costs beyond the typical services offered. If you're asking your movers to transport large, hard-to-move items, like pianos, for instance, you'll likely pay an extra fee. Likewise, if your apartment building doesn't have an elevator or the truck has to be parked far from your home, you may be charged extra. Ask about these potential expenses when signing your contract.
Don't rush through the process of hiring a moving company. Make sure the movers you hire are dependable, reputable and the right fit for your needs.
Look for Reviews and Recommendations
When hiring movers, it's a good idea to both look at reviews online and ask your friends and family members for recommendations. Personal endorsements will go a long way toward helping you determine whether you can expect the company to do a quick and professional job.
Choose Top Candidates
As you're vetting candidates through reviews and recommendations, narrow your selection to three or four top options. Make sure the companies offer the type of move you're looking for, whether it's interstate or local. These three or four companies are who you'll contact for estimates.
Don't Be Afraid to Ask Questions
After receiving estimates, you'll have a better idea which companies are within your budget. However, this isn't the only factor you should use when choosing movers, especially for more complicated jobs. In fact, you may be willing to pay a little more to hire quality movers who can ensure the safety of your belongings. Don't be afraid to call these companies and ask questions.
During the hiring process, you want to make sure of three things: First, that the moving company is reputable and has the proper licensing and insurance. Second, that the movers are dependable, professional and committed to doing the job correctly. Finally, that the estimate provided is binding and that you're aware of any potential excess costs. With these factors in mind, here are some of the most important questions to ask a moving company:
As with any service profession, there are certain moving companies - though they are few and far between - that aren't reputable or that will try to take advantage of you. It's important to be able to recognize a scam if you come across one.
Call the FMCSA
For long-distance or interstate moves, you can easily check that companies have the proper licensing and insurance, which is a clear indication that they're legitimate. All interstate moving companies must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, so call 888-368-7238 to confirm the licenses, insurance and credentials of the movers you're considering. The FMCSA can also tell you if any complaints have been filed against a particular moving company.
Check with the American Moving and Storage Association
For both local and long-distance moving companies, AMSA is another good place to check out a company's legitimacy. Moving companies aren't required to be an AMSA member, but the ones that are have committed to the association's rules and regulations, which protect both the companies and the consumers hiring them. If a company isn't an AMSA member, that doesn't mean it isn't reputable, but an AMSA membership is a clear indication of legitimacy.
One of the most common fears people face when moving to a new home is that something they own will be lost or damaged in the process. While no company will be able to guarantee everything arrives safely, there are steps you can take to make damage less likely.
Pack and Transport Your Valuables
If you have items that are emotionally or financially valuable to you, do your best to pack and move them yourself. Keep jewelry, expensive artwork, inherited valuables and even costly electronics in your own car - that way you'll have complete control over their safety at all times.
Choose a Moving Company That Plans Ahead
Moving companies can better keep your belongings safe when the movers plan ahead. What does this mean? Many companies take extra time to measure doorways, halls and stairways to find the safest route in and out of your home. They should also provide furniture blankets, covers and moving pads to keep both your home and your belongings free of scratches or other damage.
Keep the Moving Area Safe
There are some things you can control on moving day and some things you simply can't, such as the weather. If you're moving on a snowy, icy or rainy day, keeping all of your paths, stairways and walkways clear and dry is crucial. This can help protect both the movers and the large items they're carrying to and from the truck.
The subject of tipping is relatively unclear when it comes to movers. However, there is a general rule of thumb that most people in the industry agree on: Tip your movers if they've done a good job and you think a tip is warranted.
Generally, a 5 percent tip is considered appropriate, though some people recommend paying $20 per day, per mover for basic, local moves. However, almost everyone agrees you should first do a quick walk-through of your home to check for any damage to your furniture or belongings and to make sure everything is where you'd like it to be.
If you do decide to give a tip, divide it evenly and give money to each individual, rather than giving the entire sum to the head mover and expecting it to be doled out equally. One type of tip to avoid: alcohol. It's usually illegal for movers to have bottles of alcohol in the truck or van, so tipping a bottle of wine or liquor could get them into trouble.
