This place has that "Cheers," everyone-knows-your-name vibe, but it can get crazy with obnoxious drunks late into the evening. Still, they know how to pull a pint.
So this leans towards dive bar except for its location on Main St and that they offer food. I haven't eaten here so can't speak to that, but they have bands or karaoke some nights if you're looking for something to do. Has a patio in the front and the small music room in the back. Guess I've only gone because my friends were going so not my first choice.

....And getting sloshed. maybe the occasional leprechaun cuz i'm ignorant.
Needless to say, I did not get to experience any of those things for lunch today. I guess I can start with some positives. Service was good. Ridiculously good with the refilling of drinks. It's dark on the inside with dark wood and dark tables. Surrounded by flat screens, it's an ideal place to catch a game. Annnd I never seen so many condiments on a table - grey poupon! HB sauce! hot sauce! A-1! It's like a sauce lovers dream!
Located on Wilshire and 23rd, a sign specifically says to park on Wilshire because 22nd and 23rd was strict permit parking only. Luckily we found a meter right outside with a broken meter. Someone actually stuck a sign on there that said ""Meter Fail."" cute.
Back to the food, all their lunch specials are 7 bucks. By lunch specials, i mean choose between a sandwich, a burger, or a salad. Ick. Nothing really struck my fancy but I went with the corned beef sandwich because it sounded the most appropriate and uhhh Irish-y. I mean what?! I'm not gonna get a BLT here for 7 bucks.
The sandwich came and it was like rabbit food. Tons of weird shredded lettuce. Not fresh tomato and onions. They gave you a lot of corned beef but it was pretty salty like spam and didn't go well with the veggies. And some weird white mystery sauce. Jenni said it was horseradish. Eli said it was tartar. I claim it was mayo. Ehh. Food. Fail.
I really don't want to end on a negative note. Ehh. OH. The pickle was good.
I love pickles.

After reading a few of the reviews, I realize my experience with the extremely rude and horrible doorman is not unique. It's also interesting that he seems to admit more male customers than female. As I approached to enter the bar, the doorman asked for my ID and I olbiged and handed it to him. I explained I was meeting my friends inside. At which point he simply said, ""you can't go in"". When I inquired as to why, he said ""i was inebriated"". Now... this strikes me as interesting because A. the folks inside this BAR were far more inebriated than I because B. I was sober.
I don't venture out to the west side anymore simply because of this type of attitude and awful service. Previouse reviews of the doorman and service being awful and sexist are not exaggerations... if you're in the west side and considering going to O'briens... I suggest looking at the various other bars walking distance of this place. I wouldn't be too surprised if this place soon got new management and continued to receive complaints about their questionable actions.

So I was SHOCKED to see a line on a saturday night for a DINGY Pub. Once I got inside, I was still shocked and didn't understand WHAT in the world the line was for.
The place isn't swank or pretty, it's not newly renovated. It's a two room pub, nothing big or exciting. It's overcrowded at times. You can ALWAYS and easily get a drink however, and that's key at a pub!
The LIVE MUSIC is WAY TOO LOUD but it is AMAZING!!! I just wish that they'd tone it down since they play in a TINY room. It's like having a speaker in your ear.
The people who come to O'Brien's are usually VERY casual. Jeans and T-shirts, maybe a baseball hat, some girls dress up, but it's rare.
I always have a good time here once it gets crowded. That's during the weekends mostly. It's NOT the kind of place you want to take a date. It's pretty good for single mingling, but it's not romantic or the kind of place to have a serious conversation over a beer.

Comedy & music nights are enjoyable. Very laidback vibe. Mix of locals and people coming in from other parts of LA. Young crowd, but most docile environment for nightlife on main. Cool atmosphere, great drinks. good food. Bartender David is hilarious and makes the best mixed drinks and pours the best guinness. No attitude here at the door or from any of the staff inside. This pub is a great hub.

First time was the last time. There is NO parking. Once parking was found there was NO service. When I asked, for my date, if there was any food offered..I was told by the surly doorman ""NO"". No explaination, no suggestion, no manners. Didn't even look up.
The beer selection was weak. The beer tasted tainted like line mold. The service almost unavailable and rude. If you need a hook-up for the night (plentiful rock and roll type women) or a wannabee hangout, this is your place.
Anything else? Forget it.
Suffice it to say I am not a lover of the music played there. That could make a significant to some. Bad live music sets me on edge.

The patio's definitely the reason to com here and people watch the girls heading to the different clubs on a Saturday night. Their drinks are strong and the crowd is chill. There's hardly any parking so thankfully you can have time to walk it off on your way back to the car.

I went here on Friday 11/10/06 around 5PM.
My friend and I were the first people there and that's always cool.
We sat outside on the patio and drank beer.
The barkeep was cool. He was chill and friendly with a smile and I enjoy that at bars.
Hate bars that have the ""What the eff do you want?"" attitude.
Will definetly come here again. We left at *PM because we had to go to dinner but, by then the place was starting to get crowded and more people were coming in. I think this place was a great place to hang out and chill.

The staff and crowd is incredibly friendly. I live in the neighborhood and love dropping in for a bite to eat or a drink. My roommate and I went recently for their comedy night and had a great time- the comics were pretty funny, the bartender bought us drinks, and we made a couple of new friends. I highly recommend O'Brien's.

I went on a random Wednesday night after just missing happy hour. The evening started out slow but then a local soccer team came in a liven things up. Unlike some of the reviews, I found this place to be unpretenious with friendly regulars and a great bar staff. And yes, Irish people really go here. Plus, they have Stella on top---can't beat it. The musician playing/singing was also a nice touch. Very nice, local feel.

Yes, real Irish people actually go to this bar! A great spot in SM/Venice for drinks, socializing and good cheer. The location tends to pull in a relaxed and happy crowd who are mostly in their 20s. On occasion they will have a live band in the back of the room. Bartenders make good drinks, and you can also get food if you come by the early evening. Make sure and stop here while you party it up on Main Street.
Not my first time at this place, but this weekend was the best. Aside from the doorstaff being sticklers for ID, the place is a haven for the 'authentic Irish pub'-seeking crowd. Heck, most of the bartenders are Irish.
After a couple drinks and enjoying the live band, I have nothing but compliments to the staff on taking care of their customers! I look forward to going again, hopefully I can get in for St Patty's Day.
O'Brien's was a great night out. Lots of people, the bartenders made some great drinks, and the live music was amazing. It's a little loud in there, but it's worth it for the atmosphere you get when everyone's really enjoying a band.
And I always see a lot of girls there. That other guy must have just been unlucky.

What kind of ""authentic"" pub is out of the first two beers I order? A lack of libation coupled with an unbelievably rude staff at this WAY overcrowded bar made for a lousy night out. It took me 10 minutes to navigate through the crowd of wanna-bes to reach a bar to ask for my non-existent beers of choice.
Maybe after the fire department arrives to ticket them for going over capacity, the guys who run that place will cool their jets and treat the paying customers with a little respect.

Seriously don't waste your time going to O'Brien's. It's a crappy little bar with bad atmosphere and over-priced drinks. There's about 10 bars that surround this place, and they're all WAY better. The service at O'Brien's was so bad and unfriendly, I left early- amazed that they're still in business. Another fun fact was that on a Friday night, this place was over-crowded with 15 men for every woman there. To my surprise, I noticed a line full of women outside waiting to get in. Way to go, O'Brien's.

The live music rocks, and I've seen several celebs lately!!!
Short wait in line. I saw a girl get told she wasn't going to get in, but she was rude to the bouncers. Friends of the owners will get in ahead of you. When I got to go in the guy that checked my I.D. smiled, thanked me for being patient and called me by my first name. I thought that they were pretty cool.
After I got a drink, I went back outside to have a smoke. The line was gone. Probably like 15 - 20 min. later. I guess that's what happens when everyone comes out at the same time.
If you come out on the weekend between 10:30 and 1:30 you might have to wait for a few minutes to get in. Bouncers play by the rules and are hard on I.D.'s but are friendly.
