Provided by Citysearch -We were hungry and just driving through Mt. Hood's beautiful scenery - saw an inviting exterior saying they specialize in burgers.
The MOST AWFUL BURGERS we have ever eaten - EVER!!!
Their gimmick is the multiple toppings - everything you can think of and more - - - trouble is they start with awful tasteless, dense gross hamburger patties - just like the cheapest you've ever wished you'd NEVER bought from some freezer case in a discount grocery store. Really the pits.
Hubby and I had 2 different burgers and ate the decent fries and toppings (partially) which we scraped off the meat - - - -neither of us mentioned it as we were ""eating"" but discussed we should have told the staff these the worst we'd EVER EVER had.
TRAVELER beware - drive on by - eat somewhere else.
$20+ for 2 burgers this bad - is, well - should be, illegal.
They should be ashamed of this product.

Provided by Citysearch -I had been hearing great things about this place for years, and last week I finally made the trip out with a couple of friends. And all I can say is, wow, it was easily worth the drive.
The Food:
Calamity Jane's has some of the best tasting burgers around, and with a pretty extensive menu, they've got every kind of burger you can think of ranging from mundane to ""why would they even make that?"" - so regardless of your taste, there will be something to suit you. and I can attest to the fact that the marshmallow and hot fudge burger is actually quite good. Their milkshakes are also fantastic, and quite large.
The Atmosphere:
The restaurant has a western sort of theme, and while the theme has been done to death, Calamity Jane's did a good job at at least making it look good. There is nothing fancy about the place, they don't try to win you over with a ton of decorations, it just feels like home.
Service:
The one time I went was on a Tuesday night, and it was fairly early in the evening, so we basically had the whole place to ourselves. Looking back, I think we were only three other occupied tables. Regardless, our waitress was quite friendly, and service was quick.
My one gripe about Calamity's is that it's kind of a long drive from home. If you live in the Sandy area, it's going to be right down the street, but I, like most people in Oregon live in the Portland area. If my memory serves me right, the drive was about 40 minutes one way. But in spite of the long drive, I am definitely glad I made the trip out, and I'm already thinking about going back.
In short, if you like a good hamburger, you'll love Calamity Janes

Provided by Citysearch -So my family went to clamatiy jane's for our annual family reunion. we showed up unannonced with 30 people most of them being screaming 2 year olds. the manager imediatley opened there patio for us and gave us our own server. the manager came out to check on us, she then talked all the guys in our group into the trailboss burgers (which are 1 pound each) and of course we all had shakes. after our meal most of the guys need to take there burgers home.... out came a hand drawn BOX OF SHAME. WE LOVED IT!!!! Kudos to whom ever came up with that, and thank you clamity staff for making our family time a very enjoyable time.

Provided by Citysearch -This place has been around forever and when you first step inside it smells like it. It has an old musty cigarette smell, not that appetizing. Once you get used to it the place is ok but the food is just average and the service pretty poor. We were given the wrong soup and since the server never came back to check we finally had to ask someone else to get the correct soup for us. They also forgot to bring my son's milk until we asked, after the food was delivered. The burgers are huge, definetly can be split. The sandwiches are ok, nothing special. If driving up to the mountain and hungry it is an ok place to eat but not worth going out of your way for. Very kid friendly, they have a kids menu, crazy decor, and brought crayons and a picture for him to color while we waited. More of the kind of place you go once to say you have been since it is kindof iconic in East county. My husband went as a kid 30 years ago and says the place hasn't changed a bit except his taste buds grew up and he can see why his parent's were never that excited to go there!

Provided by Citysearch -Every one loves calamity janes. I hear some people from the city complain about it's cheesy decor, and strange menu...but come on...it's awesome that they serve everything (and I mean everything) in a cast iron pan, but that's totally part of it's charm. They make HUGE burgers, huge shakes...it's all great. If you're looking for something sane or bland, this is not the place for you! But this really is a great kooky gem in Sandy...try it once!
Fun place if you like burgers---don't go if you don't all want to eat burgers--because that's about all they offer----but they do have tons of burger options. The portions are huge.

Provided by Citysearch -Great food...HUGE food...classic american fare, and really hoakie western decorations! I grew up on the mountain and i've always liked Calamity Janes. Famous for their burgers and desserts. Wait staff of local teenagers is not stellar but they get the job done.

Provided by Citysearch -Our family of 4 kids and 6 adults stopped about 8 pm one evening. We got seated right away, but our server was terrible. Never got our drinks for 30 minutes and the kids had to wait almost 40 minutes. Then, some of us never got our drinks or never got them right. My dad was ready to leave, but we decided to stay. Needless to say we finally got our food after 1-1/2 hours. The food was good, but the servous was terrible. There was serveral servers just standing around, talking. Our family will never go back....

Provided by Citysearch -WOW! I sure wish my school cafeteria fries and frozen patties would have tasted like this! If they had, I wouldn't have ate elsewhere whenever I had the chance. Some reviewers clearly expect a ""champagne taste with a beer budget"".
The key words here are VALUE & SELECTION. CJ's offers some of the best burgers in the area and they do it without emptying out your wallet. They also have some pretty awesome appetizers and deserts. Plus, the staff is always very pleasent and friendly. The atmosphere is very comfortable, if you are an outdoorsey type person. If you are a stuffed shirt or an elitist snob, keep driving. This place is for hungry and jovial folks, not egocentric whiners!

Provided by Citysearch -There are a BUNCH of different ways you can have your burger, in addition to which, you can go to the burger bar to add other condiments. The burgers are big, the french fries were good, the lemonade was very good and reasonably priced. Ya gotta try Calamity Jane's!

Provided by Citysearch -My boyfriend and I LOVED IT! I got the Wrangler (2/3 lb) Bonanza burger. It was HUGE and soo goooood, I just wish I could have finished it. My boyfriend got the Trail Boss (1 lb) Guacamole burger. He finished the whole thing and the other half of my burger. We both loved it though. The service was awesome, some of the best service that I have gotten at a restaurant in a LONG time. Also, they have a 34oz mug of beer for $6, how do you beat that!? We will definetly be going back. I want to be brave enough to try one of the really odd ones but I thought I should stick to something normal it being my first time there. I think Calamity Jane's needs to be number 1 on the list.

Provided by Citysearch -Without question CJ's is the best. I've been to hamburger joints up and down the west coast and CJ's is by far the most imaginative and consistant. I love the George Washington burger, it's the Hamburger with pie cherries and sour cream. If you like spicy burgers they have three great ones to choose from. If you like a ham and eggs on your burger, CJ's is the place to be. The service is always friendly and the ambiance fits right in. If you r a traveler leave your dollar bill and they will hang it up with the other 300 or so. Thanks Calamity Jane's, lookin forward to seein you again soon.

Provided by Citysearch -Calamity Jane's has the very best burgers, shakes, fries, etc.. In Oregon!! I grew up there so I know!! My family has known the restaurant owners, since they started the restaurant, and they are such wonderful people!! It has a great atmosphere! The servers have always been so kind! The decorations are so cool, especially the swinging bar doors. I wish I was still living in Oregon, I miss it!

Provided by Citysearch -Having lived east of Sandy for over 20 years, my family (including 3 boys) often stopped here on our way to town. The boys loved all the choices in burgers and the wonderful milkshakes. I could never finish anything, but I sure enjoyed trying! Calamity's is a great family experience...why, one afternoon, we were feasting on our favorites, and in walked Davy Crocket, plopped himself right down at our table and gave my small sons the thrill of their lives! Can't beat this great place!
