Avoid if you don't want a bum's rush

Friday november 18, 2011. I was in a party of eight. Reservations at 6PM. Service was rushed. Food very good. Did I mention the service was rushed? At 7:15 PM the manager, ""C J"" (refused yo give his last name), asked us to leave as they had another party waiting! Wow, a bit overbooked? No offer of anything - we didn't even have time for dessert or coffee. In fact, when he told us we needed to vacate our table he didn't even offer an alternative when we told him we had not dessert or coffee. He was much more concerned about the new booking than us.

If you're looking for good food and a bum's rush, try Kingfish. Make sure ""CJ"" is the manager and you won't be disappointed. He will make sure you're out the door before dessert/coffee.

Great San Mateo institution

Decent place to go once a year, but food not good enough to make me a regular. It is close to the movie theater though, so a good option for before/after the movies.

Great drinks, not the best food.

I have tried so hard to like Kingfish and after the last time I went there I don't think I'll go back to eat again. The drinks are GREAT, I have never had a bad drink from there but the food is just... ok. I have ordered a variety of things and nothing has been that great or anything I'm dying to taste again. Last time we went the fish was undercooked and they ended up not charging us for the meal which was nice but I think I'd rather go to the pizza place around the corner than Kingfish. But for drinks I would say go for it! Great location as well!

succulent steak and lobster

+ prime rib;
i was starving by the time we went out for a late company lunch; i ordered a medium rare for the prime rib. for the life of me, i couldn't figure out why i wasn't scarfing this dish down.

my co-worker kindly pointed out that they provided me with a well done steak. the waiter was kind enough to quickly remedy the problem and i was downing their succulent steak in no time.

+ lobster (uber, fantabulous!)
i was nicely treated to a bit of lobster while awaiting my new and improved steak that was in the works. this was the best lobster tail i ever had. mmmm...

Talk about a DISSAPOINTMENT!!!!! I recently had dinner this past weekend on Friday! The restaurant was not even busy when I was seated upstairs. I was greeted by a young short girl who happened to be my server. I never would have guessed because after the initial greeting we weren't attended for 15 minutes. The server must have passed our table over 4 - 5 times before we were able to put in our order. The table we were seated at was right next to a area where servers put in the orders on a computer. The professionalism there is below zero. My mother and I heard numerous times foul language and sexual comments many times between KIngfish staff. This made me disgusted and was actually recommended to dine here by a friend. The food quality is not generous for the price you pay and neither is it exceptional as I expected. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND NEVER EAT AT THIS RESTAURANT! POOR SERVICE AND UNPLEASENT ENVIRONMENT!! I WOULD CONSIDER THIS PLACE LOW CLASS!!!! If there were negative star ratings, this place deserves a NEGATIVE 5-star rating. Avoid at all costs!!!

honestly, a little too overpriced! The oysters were .. ok. Overall, other than the great drinks they make there i not a big fan. But if you havent tried it, you should at least try it once!

Although the food was average - the customer service received from the manager/ owner was just bottom line RUDE. My family and I were dining and I wanted to change my 1.5 year old son's soiled diaper. There was not changing table available so I then spoke to the manager/ owner to see if he could accomodate us (we were in the middle of dining). He actually suggested I change my son a shelf located in the women's bathroom - ABSOLUTELY NOT - after literally arguing with him - he finally put two chairs together in a private dining room. Should you dine at this facility and should need to change your infant/ toddler - BEWARE of the challenges you may receive from the manager/ owner.

Avoid if you want any kind of service.

My roommate and I went this past saturday night. No tables were available, so we went up to the second floor and sat at the bar. It took about 10 minutes to even get the bartenders attention. Once our drinks were done, we were seated in the upstairs dining area, but since all we got was really slow service upstairs, we decided to find a seat at the downstairs bar. We sat there for (I kid you not) 15 minutes, and no one came over to take a drink or dinner order. The bartender did not even acknowledge us. It wasn't even that busy!!!!! We left immediately after. So could I recommend this place to you....? Yeah, if you like sitting around with no drink and no food....

Not the same as is it once was

Since new owners have taken over Kingfish, it's not the same consistent, good experience it once was. They've removed/changed signature dishes that are not close to being as good as they once were--the signature cabbage salad is now boring and tasteless where it once was a taste explosions in the mouth.
Our group agreed that they must have made changes to cut costs, but it's certainly not at the level it used to be.....and that's not even talking about the service. We were on a bit of a tight schedule, and while our food arrived quickly, it took 4 turns to the table to bring everyone's cocktail...and there were only 4 of us!
Sadly, it is no longer one of the top destinations on the Northern Peninsula

Save room for dessert!

Great food and great service! I recommend making reservations because this place gets pretty crowded. Great place for family dinners or a night out w/ friends. Try the Cosmo, you won't regret it, but save room for dessert. To die for!

Great food and ambience

Went there with a group of six on a week night. They were busy but they have a nice bar area where we waited. Service was good and the food was excellent. Several of us had the seared tuna and it was to die for.

Wow! What are great time

A group of 25 friends and I had a party at Kingfish and it was the coolest experience ever! We had the area upstairs by the bar and we were in heaven. My friends were thrilled on the excellent looking bartenders that shook drinks as if they were in a Miami hotspot! I love Miami! Anyways, I've never took the time to write one of these but, I'm telling you it was so worth it, I had to. Great fun, delicious food, friendly staff, and very accomodating managers. Get some oysters and one of their Mojito martinis and you'll be in love!

Best Restaurant in the peninsula

We have dined here regularly since the opening. We have to say that this place gets better with time ! The menu is incredible, I can find anything no matter what I am craving. I especially enjoy oysters - and they are great here. My husbands goes right for the steak and we have never had a complaint. Friendly servers without being annoying. Love Kingfish!

THE BEST on the peninsula!

No place can even compare to Kingfish on the peninsula. It is the ultimate pro & fun restaurant! My husband and I are regular ""city"" diners are were shocked when we were down in San Mateo visiting friends to see such a class act outside SF. Service was unbelievably effiecient, friendly, and best of all unpretentious. The food was terrific, I had the Niman Ranch Pork chop and my husband had the Maple leaf duck with a blood orange brown butter sauce that would rival Boulevard!!! Yes, I said it. The best thing of all were the prices. For the quality, you cannot even compare, they were far more reasonable than most places serving this type of cuisine. The winelist was quite hip. Ok, I have to say to the staff, management, ownership that they have it going on. Keep it up and you will be NATIONALLY known.

Very Upsetting

If you like going out to eat and trying new things, go somewhere else. Had a few friends with us. The owners need to take a class on owning it seems. All the chef's were arguing with each other. The server had to keep explaining to us that our food would be late (about 45 minutes) and it wasn't even busy!!! Seems like theres no structure anywhere. I would never come back. The sauce for the tuna was watery. Meat over cooked, maybe even boiled to temperature. The sushi rice was too hard. the only good thing about this place is the alcohol. Other than that, yarghhh!!!

Not the best place for those with food allergies

The chef got very annoyed when asked about the ingredients in the dishes which could be very problematic if you have food allergies. Was a very disappointing experience. I won't go back.

Bad Cooking with Good Ingredients

My girlfriend and I went during a trip to my hometown. We live in NYC and always look forward to dining in the bay area.

We went for lunch. The oysters were great; far less can be said about the shucking. They were filled with shards of shell. The Tartare was high-grade tuna, but bland. The mussels deserve their own paragraph...

A culinary nightmare! Half of the platter had not even opened. The rest were so obtrusively large and dry that the two we tried had to be spit into a napkin. They were appropriately removed from the check.

Service lackadaisical at best. We wont get into the wine disaster.

Our meal was enjoyable for a laugh's sake. All in all, money wasted. As my girlfriend said, ""What a waste of good ingredients.""

Nice Decor, Slow Service, Decent Food

I went in with a large party. The server seemed rushed all the time. I selected a wine, which I didn't care for much and was told that it was highly rated - as if my own taste couldn't tell me what I liked. I told the server ahead of time that we had two more quest arriving - which he didn't plan for even when the tables arround us became available.

The food was good. My brother got the lobster - it was juicy and tasty. I had the skirt steak. There is a flavoring they add to it they I like. The value on the rest of the items wasn't so great, like the spring rolls.

Only one restroom upstairs. You have to wait a while.

Service is Lacking

The food was amazing - rich and flavorful. The service, however, left a lot to be desired. While it was not outright bad, it was extremely mediocore. I had heard about this from friends as well, but wanted to give the place a chance. I am not sure I would come back to the San Mateo one. Perhaps the SF one will have better service?

Kingfish - a Disappointing Experience

My dining experience at Kingfish was very poor. Our table was so dimly lit, we could barely see our food. I ordered the ""Vietnamese Gulf Shrimp Rolls"" and received a single roll, cut in half. It was hard and cold and had obviously been in the fridge for a very long time. The steaks tasted fine except they were covered in a strange sweetish BBQ sauce that detracted from the taste of the meat. The plates looked really unappealing when they arrived - piece of meat on one side, starch on the other. Our server tended to disappear and seemed stressed and in a hurry.
