I couldn't have wished for anything better! Dan, Ramon and Jose were the best movers I've ever had. They were punctual, professional, and organized from start to finish. They clearly know what they're doing. I would 100% recommend the whole team at SMS MOVING and especially Dan.

I know this company has some bad reviews, but they're working really hard to rectify that. I had great customer service, they were right on time and not a penny over the ""not-to-exceed"" price. Polite and hard workers. I would definitely use them again.
They came out to my house to give me an on-site estimate, which I always insist on, even though it was quite a drive. Also, due to a mix up, they came out a day early but did not try to charge extra for that trip. I would recommend them.

I'm super stoked on these guys (especially Frank). I really don't know what all the other reviews are about, moving is stressful but these guys really helped me out. They were inexpensive, honest, and really put my worries of giving my life to a couple strangers to rest. I would recommend them to any of my friends.
I found out a few days before my move that my bed wouldn't fit into a uhaul trailer so I needed to ship my car or my stuff from SF to San Diego a little over 500 miles. I called around and got general estimates of at least $1000 before all of the extra charges associated with moving. They also said they wouldn't be able to pick it up till next week. Then I called SM&S, they were very polite I told them what I needed to move they said that it was probably around 1000 LBS and that it would cost me $600. I was very excited and scheduled the pick up for Thursday(2days later) at 3 pm, they did tell me that they were squeezing me in so I was very appreciative.
On the day of the pick up I got a call around 1 saying that they were backed up and asked if they could pick up tomorrow. I said it would be inconvenient for me and they said that they would be there in the early evening.(They told me ahead of time it was going to be a time crunch picking my stuff up on Thur.)
Frank and his helper showed up that evening and to be honest I was freaking out because of the other Yelp Reviews and told Frank about my concerns. He explained their operation to me and made me more comfortable with the whole process. They picked up my stuff wrapped my TV's up (I paid the extra fee to have them wrap the expensive TV's) and off they were. They quoted me 3-5 days and total including tax and wrapping the TV's $700 and explained every bit of the extra $100 (I was expecting more of a mark up).
4 days later I got a call from Frank telling me they were a couple hours away and asked if they could drop off my items that evening. I said sure and two hours later they were there. All of my stuff was in the same condition it was in when I gave it to them.
; as far as i'm concerned that's exactly what a moving company should do. Thanks Frank and guys!

These guys are very hard workers but are courteous and polite at the same time. They provided me with a move from San Jose, CA. down to Culver City and gave me a really good price for it.
I was actually very nervous about using their service because I've heard some really bad stories about the moving industry but I needed some assistance.
I expressed my concerns and Joey was able to explain the details of their services and what they would and would not charge for.
Come to find that they do have additional charges for additional services but they are very specific and are only applied if those services are requested.
I wanted a little help making sure my TV was going to make it to Culver City safely, seeing as how in love I am with my TV, Joey offered me a professional crate. Then he proceeded to let me know that I could take advantage of their crating services or I could wrap my own television. Then he explained to me, in detail, how to protect my television without having to pay the moving company any extra money for that service.
In most businesses, this is not a common practice so I was very impressed. I did wrap my own television but I wasn't able to finish packing before the movers arrived. They provide me with wardrobe boxes for free to pack my closets in and were even able to help me wrap my glass dining room table for as low as $40 in a crate. Once again, I was surprised by their absent hunger for profit over customer service and professionalism.
That's not even the cherry on top. When I got to my new location, the current tenants for my new place had still not moved out so I was practically homeless for a short while with nowhere to put my belongings. I called SM&S and explained what had happened and they reassured me that all long distance moves are offered up to 30 days of storage at no additional cost. I couldn't believe my original quote included exactly what I needed in the situation. Everything just seemed to fall into place with this company.
Great job SM&S team!
All in all, this company made my move go so smoothly

It is extremely clear that this moving company 'gets it'. Moving, under the best of circumstances, is stressful and their company philosophy is obviously 'get it done for the customer in whatever way possible'.
Billing was very straightforward: labor + truck. No fuel surcharges or anything else - transparency in billing is another sign of how they value customer satisfaction. They estimated 5-6 hours for my 3 bedroom house, which seemed very optimistic but finished in 4.9 hours.
My experience was that they are honest, hard-working, and dedicated to leaving with a happy client. I'd definitely use them again for moving or any of the other services they offer.
Companies that demonstrate such a strong commitment to their customers deserve to be rewarded.
We would not recommend this moving company to anyone. They were scheduled to be at our home first thing on Saturday morning. This was confirmed with the company the day prior to our scheduled move on Saturday. The company changed the arrival time from 8 am to between 9 am and 11 am. When no one showed up or called we called the company at 11:30 am to inquire where they were. They had the driver call us back which took about an hour. The driver was hard to understand, but stated they were still at another home which was taking them longer than anticipated. We reminded them we had some furniture in a storage shed that had to be out by the end of the day or we would be charged for an additional month's rent. The driver stated they would be there by 1 pm. At approximately 2 pm they called and stated they wouldn't arrive until 4 or 5 pm. We asked them where they were and they stated they were in Bakersfield which is 2-1/2 to 3 hours drive away in a large moving truck. We called the company to complain about the delay and throughout the day we were given one excuse after another from the driver. Needless to say, no one showed up on Saturday. The driver finally called late Saturday and stated they would be at our house at 8 am on Sunday morning. By 8:30 when they still had not arrived on Sunday morning, I called the driver. He stated they were in Earlimart which is about 1-1/2 hour drive to Fresno. At 9:30 am we called the driver again to see where they were and he did not answer his phone. We then called the main company to inquire and they stated that they had been unable to reach the driver also, but would try to contact him and the driver call us. We did not receive a call. At approximately 11 am we finally decided to rent a U-Haul to empty the storage shed so that we would not be charged for the additional month. We emptied and storage shed ourselves. The movers finally arrived at our home at 12 noon. They were driving an old moving truck that had graffitti written on the side of it with no information about the company on the truck at all. There were 2 Hispanic men and a young girl. The men did do an okay job, but we were charged for materials (tape), gas, and mileage in addition to the agreed upon charge for the move,
First thing Monday morning I called the company and asked to talk to the Manager. They stated she was on the phone and would call us back. We never received a call. We then called again at approximately 10 am and we spoke to Joey about the incident. He was the person who took the originial order from us. Joey stated he would get someone for us to talk to and we waited on the phone over 20 minutes. I finally hung up and called back and spoke to Joey again. This time he finally got a Manager to speak to us. We explained the story to the Manager & advised her that we had to rent a U-Haul because they failed to show up as scheduled on Saturday. We asked for reimbursement to cover the cost of the U-Haul we were forced to rent because of their lack of custsomer service. We did state our unhappiness and stated we were going to the Better Business Bureau if this wasn't taken care of in a proper manner. She stated there was nothing she could do, but would look into it and call us back. It's be 2 days and she still has not called us back. NEVER USE THIS COMPANY. They are very unprofessional and definitely not customer service oriented or reliable.
DO NOT USE THIS MOVING COMPANY!! They are your classic "Bait-n-Switch" operation. After we succinctly gave them a list of our moving items, they sent us a quote of $404. When they arrived (four hours late) they began to tell us that moving the piano, the refridgerator, washer/dryer, any mirrors or anything over it seemd 25 lbs...the list just kept going on and on..would be hundreds and hundreds of dollars over the original quote. I called Mary, the manager, to dispute this and she started yelling "read the contract". I had the contract in front of me and asked her to show me where it states there would be extra charges for such items. She couldn't point to anything specific, but just said that's what they meant! The bill turned out to be $2000 after they "waived" many extra undisclosed costs...how someone can "waive" costs for things that were undisclosed in the first place is beyond comprehension. The movers were at my house for over 24 hours! By 2 a.m. we were all so exhausted, I provided the three young movers with blankets, pillows and blow-up beds. They slept in the truck outside out house. (They said they had slept in their truck for 10 days on a prior trip!) The "professional" movers consisted of a young man whose only been in the US for three months; another young man that couldn't be more than 17, could'nt speak English and we were told was an illegal; and another man who didn't speak English. They insisted in wrapping Everything in plastic...even when I asked them not to...which just racked up the hours. We had already previously moved our entire kitchen, master bedroom furniture and living room furniture ourselves....we have a modest home and it still took them over 24 hours to move it!!! Most of it due to the slow laborious wrapping that they insisited on. We also moved our own mirrors and fragil things as everytime they touched a mirror it was $35 to $65 "wrapping charge". This whole scam was a nightmare for us...we felt so bad for the workers as they were provided no hotel or food that we ended up feeding them dinner, breakfast and lunch....the entire experience was outrageous and ridiculous. The workers themselves were nice and I'm sure just following orders....but the company is a complete farse. I am filing a formal complaint with the DA's Office and warn anyone to NEVER use this company. My anticipation and excitment for my long-awaited moving day has turned into a nightmare!
