Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties, established in 1974, is a private nonprofit organization that collects and distributes more than 20 million pounds of food each year to low-income children, adults and seniors. It cooperates with other member food banks, to receive food from national corporate food donors, and to benefit from national publicity and mutual support. It offers a variety of programs, such as partners in need, food assistance program, operation brown bag and family harvest. It also provides education about food safety, cooking, low-cost shopping, healthy food choices, and special nutrition conditions. Located in San Jose, Calif., it is a certified member of America's Second Harvest.
