Posh Chinese

This is the closest chinese restaurant to my office. Excellent food always. I always get the lunch special - spicy shrimp something. For the amount of food and the quality the $14.95 price is worth it (apetizer or soup, entree with vegetable). Service has always been good. Good place to meet for business meetings. A little expensive for more than 2x a month.

READ THIS ONE FOR THE KNOW~ BOYCOTT THIS PLACE

Obviously the PRIOR reviewer didn't read the PRIOR PRIOR reviewers paragraph. It wasn't about a bad dining experience, it was about NOT dining at an establishment that encourages the killing of sharks for their fins. Sharks are caught by the hundreds and literally all their fins are cut off immediately and they are thrown back alive into the water to die. To deter this inhumane treatment of sharks, boycotts on establishments that profit off this is what the reviewer was trying to say.

If you want a good blues club try Biscuit and Blues downtown.

Great Food/Cool Locale

Great place for dinner!!! Terrific food in a very cool atmosphere. Live (not too loud) jazz band in background, with great service and food at the table. Would be a great place for a group, a date, or alone at the bar. Get the potstickers! Enjoy!

Do not eat there

This restuarant has shark fin soup on the menu. If you are planning on eating there, call and explain to the manager and the owner that you will not eat there until they stop offering shark fin soup. If you're unaware of this issue, please google ""Stop Shark Fin"".

Busy, busting place with great food and wine!

This previous diner obviously had a bad day...I have been there many many times and it is always good. Being Chinese, I know my food and i love wine so like anywhere, you need to know what to order. Ask the servers and they wil guide you to the signature dishes...The SF Chronicle named it one of the ""Top 100 Restaurants"" in the BayArea and gave it *** so how bad can it be. The live jazz is free and I even saw Stevie Wonder play there one night a few years back for free and he just jumped on the piano and played for almost two hours...mind blowing experience!

The food tasted like cheap chinese takeout and made me ill

I wanted a good quick bite after meeting a friend at a bar nearby. As usual most of the good restaurants were packed and I just didn't want to deal with the hassle. This place was almost empty and that made me think twice. But then I thought, given the location, how bad can it be?

It became clear really fast why almost no one else wanted to be there. I ordered, got my food and it consisted of MSG laden takeout style food that tasted like it had been kept warm under one of those heat lamps you see at McDonalds. I was starving but couldn't force myself to finish.

I was so hungry and it was pricey enough that I forced myself to finish about half of what was served. What a mistake, this stuff turned to lead in my stomach and my gut still feels horrible three hours later as I write this review.

Don't ever go here, or if you do, don't eat anything.

Expensive very ordinary chinese food.

Nice atmosphere and some music couldn't makeup for the blase food. We had to send the first three courses back. This needs improvement.

Great place, but beware of the service

The food and ambiance of this restaurant are fabulous, but unfortunately, the service is not. We finally got the waiter's attention, and ordered our dinner, which included a lobster dish. After about 25 minutes, he comes back (for the fist time since taking the order) and asks us what we ordered! We repeated the order, and he disappeared. The wine director came over, because it was so obvious that things weren't going well with the server. When we told him we ordered the lobster, he told us that they had been out of that for about an hour. The server never mentioned this, or was just plain clueless. After that, the wine director took care of us. He got our entrees out to us right away, and was very accomodating. He brought over a bottle of champagne on the house, and didn't even charge us for our dinner. Thanks to him, we were finally able to try the food, which is very good. Please hire some experienced waiters, because this is too nice a place to have bad service overshadow everything else.

Food awesome...service awful

Ambiance of restaurant was fabulous! They had a live jazz band when we were there. Service was a little slow. For such a nice restaurant, you would like service would be good....but I guess it's the same service with a typical Chinese restaurant

Coolest Place to be with great music

As a longtime resident and someone who goes out 3-4 times a week minimum, I highly recommend Shanghai 1930! The mood is like being in an exclusive club in Shanghai in the 1930's....hence the name. True to it's time there is a lot of excellent Jazz....really excellent new stuff, the staff is old-school with the service and the food is exactly how it should be...better than you even thought it could be!

And it is fun to take out of town guests or old friends that have never been as people are always really impressed when they walk down the red stairs into the ""club"" at how different it is from anything else in San Francisco. Shanghai 1930 becomes the new/old favorite of many for many reasons!

Best restaurant in San Francisco.

In the last few years, I have eaten at Shanghai 1930 a dozen times. I have never had a bad dish, let alone a bad meal. I have hosted large business parties, intimate client dinners, evenings out friends and even dinners with my wife and 3 boys. Shanghai 1930 met the needs of each type of dinner or lunch perfectly. The food is outstanding, creative and unique, served with the elegance of the best French restaurants. There are certain dishes I have to order every time I go (the Yangtze River Lite Fry is unlike anything I have had anywhere else) and yet I can always find something new that I have never tried before.
While I don't usually drink wine with Chinese food, Shanghai's wine list is so good, I can't resist. There are some real gems on the list.
There are certainly some good neighborhood Chinese restaurants in San Francisco. But for Chinese food that rises to the level of fine dining (on a par with Boulevard, Jardinere, Aqua), there is not a single restaurant in the City that can compare.

best FRESH FOOD, SERVICE, AMBIANCE with LIVE AWARD WINNING MUSICIANS WHILE YOU DINE - and VALET PKG

I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT!!
They NAIL it EVERY TIME!! - I can drop in for lunch or dinner, as a single or hosting a huge party.
The decor and atmosphere is immediately relaxing alone or with that special someone, yet comfortable enough to bring a family.
THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE TO BOOK A PRIVATE OR CORPORATE PARTY!!!! AND KNOW THEY WILL MAKE IT A SUCCESS WHILE MEETING ALL YOUR DETAILED REQUESTS!!!
Their LIVE MUSIC SETS YOU IMMEDIATELY INTO A RELAXED BLISS WITH THE PERFECT COCKTAIL.
For those in the know, the PRIVATE CLUB IN THE BACK ( where one can OFTEN come across or mingle with POLITICAL AND ENTERTAINMENT POWERHOUSES) adds a unique dimension to a dining and bar experience.
The SERVICE AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL HAS BEEN CONSISTENTLY IMPECCABLE. No matter who you are, they make YOU FEEL SPECIAL!
MOST IMPORTANTLY---THE FOOD IS ALWAYS FRESH- THE DISHES AUTHENTIC- AND OPTIONS ARE ALWAYS ALIGNED WITH WHAT IS IN SEASON AT THAT TIME.

Shanghai 1930

What an amazing place! The food was great. They had signature dishes that really had lots of flavor and history. The wait staff pay attention to every detail. You feel very comfortable and relaxed there. The live jazz music is great. Good music, good food, and a great atmosphere. I highly recommend it.

Bad Banquet Manager for Private Parties

I rented the place out for a weekend lunch event. The banquet manager was rude and dishonest when it came to negotiations. The facility and food were fine, but the banquet manager was a no-show for the event and left no instructions for the manager on duty about the details that were discussed. They packed too many chairs to each table so they were jammed together -- I had to remove some chairs myself. There were no staff to help guests with high chairs or booster seats (which I had to rent and bring myself). The manager and hostess on-site were oblivious to details that took weeks to plan but quite accommodating when I asked to have them taken care of. Overall, I wished I had worked with them to plan my party instead of the dismissive and hostile banquet manager.

Pretty, but mediocre food

A nice bar and a pretty dining room, but the food just so-so. Our waitperson was very friendly and she was efficient and helpful. The sommelier, despite a quite arrogant attitude, recommended an excellent bottle of wine, which turned out to be, unfortunately, the best part of the meal. Prices are extremely high considering the food. The night before we went to Boulevard just up the block, which was even more expensive. The difference was that, there, we felt it was worth every penny and more.

Nice atmosphere, lousy food

This is a nice place to go for drinks and listen to jazz but the food is awful. The service is extremely slow and two of the orders in our party of six were wrong.

Horrible customer service

I called to make reservations and the woman who answered the phone was extremely rude and would not let me make a reservation and hung up on me. I called back and again tried to make a reservation and she hung up on me again. After calling back and being hung up on a third time, I gave up. I would not recommend such a rude restaurant to anyone.

Super Great

We took my parents for their anniversary and they loved it. It is a bit pricey, but the wine list is fantastic and the portions were perfect. The Service was wonderful. The appetizers are great, especially the Short ribs and the duck in lettuce. The Clay Pot Chicken was very tasty. Definitely get the flambe banana!!!!

Close to perfect...but not quite

While I agree with many of the parts of the previous review, there are some things that I would modify. First, the food has been better. I have been coming here for some time now, and the food seems like it's on a decline. That said though the service made a very profound difference. ""Angeline"" was our waitress, and she was really excited to be there-you should ask for her-but she wasn't overbearing. We tried some things by the glass for wine, which were far more interesting than they have been in the past, and now they really work with Chinese food. It seems like they are paying more attention to their wine than their food. However, we will go back now, even if the food is just ok-because the service tops many of the the restaurants in town!

NOT WHAT I EXPECTED...

...and that is a good thing. Never been a fan of the place, but a friend wanted to go, so-
We had a drink at the bar, where service has ALWAYS been slow, and normally rude. They are all new, and know what they are doing. The wine list is beyond words. Well organized, well priced, and above all, the wine guy actually knows what he is talking about. Huge improvement here. Ask for the pairings! Our waiter was amazing. He was friendly, but almost invisible (in a good way). Wow again. The food is suited a bit to the western taste buds, I think, but still pretty good. Just stay away from the stuff that doesn't seem authentic Chinese (a la ""noodles with garlic and shrimp"") and you will be excited.
Great energy in the room. New ownership, maybe? New management? Whatever...it's working!
