Wow, a frame shop that’s actually fun to be in. The staff was amazing, very knowledgeable, friendly, and happy to see you.
The prices were very reasonable, especially for custom framing. They can handle the really difficult custom work as well. They had a fantastic selection, probably the largest I’ve seen.
I’ve been framing things for years. I have yet to find a better price and service. I would recommend this store to anyone.
The art gallery is also top notch.

I love the framing at this place! What I especially love is how they gently move me beyond my comfort zone, and encourage me to try new things I would have never considered otherwise. And... they have extreme patience to boot. It takes me forever to make up my mind, especially when I'm considering something new, and they never make me feel rushed or unwelcome. Its truly a high end framing shop with none of the high end snobbery or attitude. You don't like their suggestions? No problem.. they just create some more possibilities for you. At other shops I've been you, you have to brace yourself for the bad vibes that shoot your way when you don't fall in love with everything they suggest. A great find.

Choosing a frame can sometimes be overwhelming, because there are so many choices available, but the staff at Paul Mahder Gallery make it both easy and interesting. Paul and Rich are delightful, and will gladly work with you to create an exquisite setting for your art. Rich, the main framing designer, has a wealth of Interior Design expertise to draw on, and an especially nuanced understanding of color and proportion. I'm a fiber artist who cares a great deal about color and design, and Rich quickly pulled together several framing suggestions for me to choose among. Rich's work helped me see something new in my oil paintings and working with him was a fascinating process. The gallery staff will even make house calls to help you decide how to frame and hang your piece to enrich and complete your space! Their workmanship is impeccable, they deliver on time, and you'll be very pleased with the whole experience.
Being a small collector of contemporary art and photography I was very excited to discover Paul Mahder's work. My first introduction was through a friend. Since then I have been an avid supporter of his gallery. When it opened I was excited to discover Paul had incorporated custom framing. Surprised by the large selection of frames, Rich, their in-house framing designer worked with me to find some creative and beautiful solutions for my pieces.
Their framing room has thousands of beautiful frame samples. What was amazing was how Rich was able to select 3 or 4 out of the thousands, choose a mat that works, explain why each option worked in its own way to enhance the image. It is beyond my comprehension how he could choose so few out of that many and be right on the money.
They have framed in excess of 15 pieces for me, each one has enhanced the image, worked within the decor of my home and brought numerous compliments from friends.
I've worked with a couple of well known prestigious frame companies in SF, who have done great work, but I feel the gallery provided a higher level of service and creative ideas. They even came out and helped arrange and hang the work! Can't say enough about this wonderful gallery and framing company. They made framing enjoyable, easy and hassle free.
Framing can make a piece look just finished or as I have discovered at the Paul Mahder Gallery it can make a piece look really outstanding.
I recommend them without hesitation.
Situated in the Presidio Heights neighborhood, this gallery is a great asset to our city. Wonderful light -filled space. Always cheerful gallerist Paul Mahder is extremely friendly and informative. They do a very nice framing job too and have an amazing array of framing options in the back room to choose from. They help you pick out the best frames to enhance your photos for a great quality job. I had 6 pieces of artwork framed there for a very reasonable price.
My wife and I recently had a large (24” x 36”) color-pencil drawing framed at the Paul Mahder gallery. Framing is a little daunting when it’s an original piece and you really don’t want to make the wrong choice. That’s where Rich the framing designer at the Gallery was especially helpful. Rich explained that with a really colorful drawing, such as our, it was important to select frame that would not distract the viewer. He helped us select what was essentially a simple and elegant black wood frame, and then tossed in a very important touch – he suggested using a matte with a black edge – in essence creating an interior border which places the attention on the drawing. A couple of simple choices turned a very strong drawing into a major center piece.
My wife was especially pleased with the framing service. I also recall they had several walls covered with frame samples and Rich was willing to work with me as I held the drawing up against frame after frame and frame.
I had some framing done at the gallery and I was amazed at the variety of frames and mats available and how knowledgeable they were. I wasn't sure what I wanted and got some great assistance too. The framing was fantastic and the art gallery itself was beautiful. I would not hesitate to recommend their framing services to anyone wanting to frame artwork or photos, I even framed an old poster. Their prices are very reasonable and the quality was the best.
We had a fun cocktail party here on a weeknight for our volunteer appreciation event. The airy open space, tasteful lighting, beautiful art, and comfortable feeling made it a great place for a low-key event that still felt special and elegant. The staff was so helpful and gracious, and the location in Laurel Heights was so nice, that we will be coming back to host more events and parties here.

This art gallery is a great place for a reception, cocktail party, or other event. We had an after-work party there and everyone commented on what a beautiful gallery it was, how hip and fun. We also found the staff easy to work with; they were helpful and accessible. The airy, multi-leveled space made it possible for our guests to browse the beautiful art, chat with friends on a comfy couch, or mill about the crowd. I also like to drop in periodically to see the art, because it changes regularly, and ranges from abstract to figurative, as well as from photography to drawings, to paintings, and to sculpture.

I recently held a small gala event at the Paul Mahder Gallery and was incredibly pleased with the venue. I was initially drawn to this gallery by the beautiful artwork over a wide range of media and the inviting space. All guests were impressed by the layout, presentation, and beauty. Working with Paul Mahder and his staff to plan and coordinate the event was a treat. They couldn't have been more pleasant, friendly, and helpful. I highly recommend this venue for an elegant event or as a place to stop by to some gorgeous pieces of art. I will be back again and again!
