I loved my stay at the Cornell Hotel de France. The staff was very nice. It was homey and beautiful with all the art on the walls: both hand painted and framed. The morning breakfast was my favorite - with the friendliest servers!!!. Fantastic and safe location. - Loved being blocks away from San Francisco landmarks. I really enjoyed my stay and will definitely be back.

My wife and I recently stayed at this hotel for four nights. We had a room on the top floor (6th floor) on the Amedeo Modigliani themed floor. The room was spacious, especially by San Francisco standards. The bed exceeded our expectations and we always slept comfortably. We had visited about 14 years ago when we were dating and I thought that $85 was a steep price back then. But, it is well worth the $140 plus per night rate. We enjoyed our breakfast immensely. The ambiance was genteel, without the stuffiness. And, the food, especially the french toast, was superb. The service was also extraordinary for a hotel in this ""class.""I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to be close to Union Square without any of the major drawbacks.

The location of the hotel was perfect; near the cable car & bus lines. The included breakfast was generous & the waitress was efficient & cheerful & the French music playing in the background was soothing. The old French elevator was fun to use. We felt the cost of our stay was very reasonable especially considering the location in San Francisco. We booked a medium sized room & would not have enjoyed a smaller room. All of the staff members were friendly & very helpful. It helped in the enjoyment of our visit that they were experiencing record breaking warm weather & we could be comfortable without sweaters or jackets.

This was our first trip to San Francisco and we had no idea where to stay. I found this hotel listed in Frommers, and read the reviews before making reservations. After spending four nights there, I cannot understand the negative comments.
The rooms are smallish, as expected in a European style older hotel, but they were quaint and very clean. Both rooms we had (we stayed three nights, and then another before returning home) had large claw foot tubs with shower enclosure. The towels were luxurious and there were actually real glasses instead of plastic!
The hotel is ideally located near Union Square and steps from the Powell cable car lines, and the area abounds with eateries. The hotel itself has a very nice french restaurant and serves breakfast included in the fare.
The entire staff was delightful and very helpful with questions about the area.
We would not hesitate to return, or suggest the hotel to our friends.

We stayed at this hotel this past summer and although the rooms were small, they were lovely and clean with an old world feel. The elevator is original to the building and the restaurant in the basement is probably one of the best kept secrets in San Francisco.

If you are used to modern have everything at your fingertips type of hotels, this might not be for you. But if you are looking for a comfortable, welcoming, European ambience, this place is for you!
Rooms run a bit small, but are comfortable and clean. The elevator is probably the original one in this victorian building but is incredibly quiet. Breakfast is served every morning in their restaurant downstairs...we are not talking Continental breakfast....eggs, pancakes, etc. were choices. Great French ambience.
Overall, a lovely place for a great price!
