General Info
ORTEGA'S Bistro has been recognized by Fodor's Travel, the foremost name in travel publishing, as a 2010 Fodor's Choice selection. This distinction represents a remarkable achievement and recognizes ORTEGA'S as a leader in its field for service, quality, and value in the 2010 year. Restaurant Critic "Ortega's brings a lifetime of experience to this two-story restaurant, which is warm and modern. The creative menu runs the gamut from enchiladas and tacos to Kobe beef burritos and chicken mole. Everything Ortega's serves has a fresh and clean flavor." Maria C. Hunt Californians long have flocked to Puerto Nuevo, the "lobster village" south of San Diego in Baja California. When a member of the family that operates several Puerto Nuevo restaurants opened Ortega's, it became an instant sensation, since it brought no-nonsense, authentic Mexican fare straight to the heart of Hillcrest. The specialty of choice is a whole lobster prepared Baja-style and served with superb beans, rice, and made-to-order tortillas, but there are other fine options, including melt-in-the-mouth carnitas (slowly cooked pork), made-at-the-table guacamole, and grilled tacos filled with huitlacochecorn mushrooms and Mexican herbs. If you like authentic spice, ask for the special red salsa. EPICURIOUS EATING: Ortega's BISTRO "Freshly made tortillas emitting their moisture from steel serving pots merely added to the bakery-like redolence in the room." Frank Sabatini Jr.

Edible

I do enjoy going to this place once every couple of months for a ""Puerto Nuevo"" lobster.

Why a 3 star rating? Technically 3 stars means ok, so this place is actually ok.

Positives:
I do like their tortilla soups (they have 2 kinds, both are good), and I do like the Puerto Nuevo whole lobster.

Not so positives:
I really don't like the salsa, the rice or the beans.

If you are in the neighborhood, you should try them out and see if you agree

Great Mexican bistro

Very good bistro. If you like Mexican food than this is the place to stop and eat. I came here with a group of friends over the weekend and we had an absolute blast!

Great Mexican food

I really like this next restaurant in San Diego. They have a very extensive menu and the food is very authentic. Parking was a little bit tough but other than that I was really happy with my experience and I will definitely be coming back.
