The 3000-mile (5000-km) interval that we recommend for gas engines is even more important in diesels. (And it’s not a bad idea to change fuel filters as well.) The API (American Petroleum Institute) rating system for motor oils has a special category for diesels. Diesel oils carry a “C” (for “compression engine”) rating.

Individual circuits often have their own ground connections, and these need to be clean and tight. Often these are not insulated at the factory. I recall a Mercedes with intermittent fuel injection system failure, which turned out to be an uninsulated ground connector right under the battery, with the battery leaking onto it.

Transmission and Drivetrain

Some BMWs 1995–99 are also listed as requiring AE fluid, which does cross-reference to the VW fluid. Later BMWs have sealed transmissions with a 100,000 mile factory fill, so don’t do routine transmission service on these vehicles without BMW’s advice. These BMWs require special equipment and procedures for fluid checking and fill.

Clean the plugs and see if it works; sometimes the problem is as simple as corroded terminals. (If it’s a single-prong switch, jump the car side of the plug to ground. This should bring on the fan if everything else is OK.) The fans usually are also connected to the air conditioning system, so that if the A/C comes on, the fan also comes on.

We don’t start any car without checking oil and coolant. If the car hasn’t run for about six months or more, we make sure the fuel system is clean, the cooling system is clean and filled properly, and the brakes work.

Electrical Service/Repair
The heart of a car’s electrical system is the BATTERY. Batteries are meant to be recharged regularly, and they don’t do well sitting for long periods of time. On boats and other vehicles that are only used seasonally, it is recommended that the battery spend its off season connected to a trickle charger so that it doesn’t run down and destroy its plates. The charge will dissipate slowly even without a drain, but of course even a small drain makes it much worse. In general, a long slow trickle charge is more effective than a quick recharge.

General Repairs
Malki was sponsored for a U.S. visa by a Presbyterian minister in Columbus, Ind., and was able to move to America in 1956. In 1957 he moved to Whittier. He lived there a year before moving to San Bernardino, where he worked as a mechanic. “He was an expert in foreign cars because where he learned to be a mechanic, there weren’t a lot of American cars,” said David Malki. In 1960 Malki opened his automotive repair business. It was the first import-only auto repair shop in San Bernardino.
