when my husband and i were trying to find a place to eat for our last night in san antonio on our getaway, we had it narrowed down to two places: the iron cactus and ritas. we just knew we wanted margaritas and mexican food. we wanted them to be good but at just before 7:00, we didn't think we would have to worry about making our plans right before 10 pm. HAHA were we wrong. ANYWAYS, after reading reviews on another website, we chose here because rita's had "horrible service and margaritas". did someone get them mixed up?! they are kind of close to each other. our waiter was ok- at first. i have been waiting tables for 6 years and bartending for 4 of them. when a waiter is nervous or has a bad night, i can tell, but i am sympathetic. but what i am NOT sympathetic to is being ignored or lied to. my husband asked what the difference between the margarita and the mexican martini size/price and our waiter told us it was DOUBLE THE SIZE... well for only 3 dollars more, it just made sense(from what he told us, DOUBLE THE SIZE, right?!?!?) so my husband ordered it and i a strawberry margarita, regular size. about 20 minutes later after our waiter had checked on his other tables several times without asking us if we were ready to order, we get our margaritas and they are NOT at all what they should be. my "strawberry" margarita was a house margarita with a tiny bit of strawberry swirled around the glass... i should have just gotten a house i guess. my husband's margarita was in a glass 2 oz. bigger than mine(we have them at the place i work) and since my margarita wasn't an ounce big... it was NOT twice the size. totally disappointed. it tasted good though. after 2 hours waiting for our food it took another 40 minutes waiting for our check(other tables of fernando's had the same problem), we contemplated asking for our bill several times(for the drinks, before the food came out), and right before we did it our food came out. it was lukewarm, my husband's fajitas were not sizzling and my queso was cold. by now it was 9:10 and we were so mad we just wanted to leave. we finally got to leave iron cactus at 9:40.. an almost THREE HOUR dining NIGHTMARE... at least the food could have been hot. i would have complained to the manager that night but it seems that a bunch of people beat me too it. we really had to make it to our other obligations, luckily we did. i knew that harassing a manager wouldn't make me feel better but maybe warning other people would...
UPDATED POSTING & CHANGE IN RATING: I revised my original rating of one star (based on my experience cited in the "Old Positing" below) to a five star for this location because management apparently pays attention to these reviews: (1) they cleaned house with new personnel and (2) training was apparently re-emphasized: The staff is extremely friendly at the window, orders are filled correctly; sauces are included, and the menu terminology confusion has been corrected. Great job top management in responding to your customers! _______________________________________________ OLD POSTING: (1) This particular location on Wurzbach and IH-10 over the last 36 months has invariably filled our family orders incorrectly, and one time there was a huge puddle of pickle juice on top of one of our BBQ plate orders. (2) For breakfast, they always seem to forget hot sauce with the order. (3) One very frustrating issue is a lack of training for the window clerks. When ordering CHICKEN TENDERS as described on the drive-through menu, the fast food clerk ALWAYS refers to them as & STRIPS; this continuously frustrates our family, as well as a few of our friends who also dine there, for fear that our orders will once again be filled incorrectly. RETRAIN THE CLERKS OR CHANGE THE OUTSIDE MENU: ARE THEY CALLED STRIPS OR TENDERS?! Overall, this is surprisingly terrible customer service considering the long-time positive experience I have had with other locations. I recently noticed a change in personnel as of February 2011, so we'll see how things go. If it's not fixed, we're gone!
I am not sure if many places...especially of the fast food sorts...would fit the bill for a 5-star rating. Still, Podna's Catfish and Po'Boys was an easy choice for a top rating. Having spent 6 months living in San Antonio, this place became one of my favorites. Although it is a place that could be easily overlooked on Austin Highway, and generally would not be fit for a 30 minute lunch if you work downtown, I found as many opportunities to go back as my co-workers would allow. The food in general is really good, but of course, you should shoot for the po'boys. My favorite was the 12" 1/2 fried oyster, 1/2 fried shrimp. Whatever you choose, it is overflowing with meat, the roll that it comes in is fresh and the sauce that you can add on your own is great. The fries weren't necessarily my favorite, but they are still really tasty and not overly fried or salty. This is a pretty basic restaurant, and watch out for the high noon lunches, as it might be difficult to find a table. But the staff is really nice and the owner, who willingly shares about his visit to New Orleans which led to the start of his business, is definitely a friendly character. Although I was never that rushed, they even have a drive-through, and I have heard that you can call in orders and have them cater. Now, I am off to new eating adventures in Dallas, TX as a next step in my own professional pursuits, but Podna's will definitely be on my list when I take my next trip to SA.
I am a frequent visitor to San Pedro location because it's close to my job. Today, I dined in with a co-worker as well placed a to-go order for another co-worker. I was very disappointed to learn that once again the to-go order was not right. Instead of the Combo Meal #04 that I ordered I received a family order of fries. This is the 5th time that I can recall having to return to this location due to an error. On these visits I have been over charged, giving food that is not fresh, and on the other occasions I’ve just been given the wrong order all together. I truly enjoy dining in this restaurant but when it comes to drive-thru or a walk-up order, there always seems to be a problem. Not only does this cause me to waste time, it also wastes money due to having to return to the location. The only redeeming aspects of this day were the courteous service and the friendly manner in which the employee handled the complaint and the freshness of the order.
Have used them for catering large company events with over 250 people spread out over two shifts. They have a number of things to pick from but the overall favorite is the Three Meat Plate, with potato salad, beans, bread, jalapenos, iced tea, and pies and cheesecake. We have had various celebration dinners, but our employees love them best of all. They love the taste of the food and they love how quickly they are served. I love their effeciency in serving, their courteousness, their willingness to meet our needs, and at this last event, the extra touches they made to make it the greatest catering event for our employees. Looking back, I can remember when looking for a caterer and seeing their name, I only thought they did hamburgers out on Austin Hwy. I took a chance went by, tasted the food, decided to use them, and our employees loved it so much I have kept using them and will continue to do so.
Across from the Hotel Valencia this little deli exceeded my expectations. We were waiting for the valet and I spied this deli across the street. I asked the girl at the counter for something quick and delicious. She suggested the Unforgettable Druthers (turkey, cream cheese, bacon, sprouts, tomato, and avocado) and Kenny's Klub (turkey, bacon, onion, tomato) sandwiches. When I got in the car my boyfriend and I split the Unforgettable Druthers first. Who knew sprouts could be so good. Later on we shared the Klub and that was amazingly good too. All I have to say that I am glad the valet took forever with our car. If he hadn't we might have never had the pleasure of eating here. Love the food, will be back next time I am in town. I can't wait to try those sandwiches from the grill! :)
My brother and his wife went to for their Anniversary a few days ago and I was looking to take my wife for her Birthday Meson was recommended we choose to give it a try and we're happy we did. The food, ambiance, service and the staff were great. We have the le, escargo as appetizer, the house salad (Organic spring mix) Service with the French vinaigrette, my wife had the Lamb and I had the grilled New York cut of beef served with the bernaise sauce, a bottle of Little Black Dress wine which was very good for $21.00 I spoke with the owner who is from Dominican Republic and he said that they moved from the Zavala where they open on 1995 now they have being in the new location since 2008.Any way we enjoy everything there and will be back and tell every badge we know to give a try.
I'm in from LA and how can you be in Texas and not get some barbecue? The reviews I read on this chain elsewhere were mixed, but since it's right next door to my hotel, I tried it anyway. I got the rib plate with three sides. The first rib I had was absolutely great! Tender and wonderful and it put Los Angeles Bar-b-q to shame. The other ribs on the plate must have come from an earlier batch because they were dry and overcooked, and a little bacony tasting. Oh well. I still enjoyed that first rib, and would go back to give them another chance. The service was friendly and efficient, and the place clean and comfortable. The sides were good also. Give it a try if you're in the area, and be happy with good, but don't expect fantastic.
I love Bill Millers' Bar-B-Que. They have anything from chicken to brisket to sausage to ribs. They have a combination plate that give you a little tast of everything. The green beans are unique to the place and are by far the best green beans I have ever had. If we go into eat we always have to take at least one whole pie home to eat later for dessert cause we are usualy too full to eat it there and it just tops off the meal so well. I have been to a lot of places that serve Bar-B-Que but I guess I like Bill Millers for the pure and simple fact that they are a family owned place from right here in San Antonio. They also give back and support the community in a lot of generous ways. To me that speaks volumes about a place.
Now When we want a nice diner or lunch we go to Meson. The food is very very good we was there a few days ago for diner and to day we went for lunch We ordered the Ceasar Salad for two prepared table side and their lunch day special which was crab meat sauteed with a reduction of batter and wine with a hint of east indian spices, friend order the grilled salmon which was fresh and juicy, the Ice Tea and lemonade was the best we ever have, we complement the waiter and he said they use Kangen Water to make their tea, coffee and their thing in the restaurant. They have a full bar with very large wine list at very good price and private room for meeting. The place is beautiful and the people are nice. We recommend
